i was listening to bob boilen on npr the other day and had to turn it off for this reason so i empathize

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 29 January 2020 19:55 (six years ago)

She’s reportedly booked to perform during the “In Memoriam” segment at the Oscars.... That’s quite a gig, hope she takes out her Invisalign!

dad genes (morrisp), Thursday, 30 January 2020 03:52 (six years ago)

I think her real genius is in her soft closely microphoned vocals

Dan S, Thursday, 30 January 2020 03:59 (six years ago)

yeah, i don't even know who produces and records her stuff but they should be getting paid

I wanna publish memes and rage against machimes (rip van wanko), Thursday, 30 January 2020 04:03 (six years ago)

I was listening to a lot of the album yesterday and I'm still amazed how perfectly the xanny vocals, starting at skepticism, kind of float off at the end

babu frik fan account (mh), Thursday, 30 January 2020 04:03 (six years ago)

xp it's her and her brother in her bedroom iirc?

The Squalls Of Hate (sleeve), Thursday, 30 January 2020 04:08 (six years ago)

xp production is entirely her brother, Finneas, who also writes the music for the tracks. All in their bedrooms at their parents' house in LA. I've seen interviews where Billie points to the bed and says yeah I just lay on my back there with a vocal mic to record "Bad Guy" or whatever.

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Thursday, 30 January 2020 04:11 (six years ago)

it does feel like bedroom music in the best way

Dan S, Thursday, 30 January 2020 04:13 (six years ago)

does anyone know of a good edit that basically justs extends/loops the house-tempo sections of Bad Guy?

Good taste, bit Victorian but who isn't? (jed_), Thursday, 30 January 2020 04:13 (six years ago)

Good taste, bit Victorian but who isn't? (jed_), Thursday, 30 January 2020 04:14 (six years ago)

still astonished that my 10 year old goddaughter picked up on her even before this album came out

Dan S, Thursday, 30 January 2020 04:16 (six years ago)

Finneas won Grammys for producer of the year and best engineered album, so he's certainly getting recognized.

jaymc, Thursday, 30 January 2020 04:36 (six years ago)

imo the biggest argument for billie eilish having actual talent is how much worse finneas's solo stuff is

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Thursday, 30 January 2020 04:51 (six years ago)

I wanna publish memes and rage against machimes (rip van wanko), Thursday, 30 January 2020 04:56 (six years ago)

I assume now that Finneas will take a bunch of production jobs and Billie won't drop another album until 2022

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Thursday, 30 January 2020 15:10 (six years ago)

can't imagine there are many/any production gigs more lucrative than the one he already has

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Thursday, 30 January 2020 15:11 (six years ago)

he's worked with Halsey, Tove Lo, Camilla Cabello and Selena Gomez recently. Probably made a few bucks.

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Thursday, 30 January 2020 15:16 (six years ago)

Her bro is reportedly readying a solo bow.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 30 January 2020 15:19 (six years ago)

he already put out an EP last year

maura, Thursday, 30 January 2020 18:16 (six years ago)

anything to recommend on it?
(btw maura, i liked your time mag best music of the decade and connected with a lotta your choices)

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 30 January 2020 18:22 (six years ago)

i'd have to relisten!

(and thank you :))

maura, Thursday, 30 January 2020 18:30 (six years ago)

I've only heard "bad guy," but I liked it. That's all I got on the subject, beyond thinking it's damn ridiculous people thought she should be aware of Van Halen.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 30 January 2020 19:15 (six years ago)

Her brother did one of those "song association" things for ELLE that made me want to defenestrate my monitor.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 30 January 2020 19:15 (six years ago)

i have to say i have never forgiven him since seeing this picture

i'm sorry but when you're 16 you're not supposed to like family photos. you don't smile reflectively while dressed like you're doing a Tigerbeat shoot

I wanna publish memes and rage against machimes (rip van wanko), Thursday, 30 January 2020 19:28 (six years ago)

dude wait til you see his yearbooks

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Thursday, 30 January 2020 19:32 (six years ago)

let's do an old fashioned FT 'am i cool or not?'

I wanna publish memes and rage against machimes (rip van wanko), Thursday, 30 January 2020 19:34 (six years ago)

What's wrong with that photo?

dad genes (morrisp), Thursday, 30 January 2020 19:45 (six years ago)

(as in -- I don't get the problem w/it, looks like a perfectly normal family pic)

dad genes (morrisp), Thursday, 30 January 2020 19:45 (six years ago)

a lot, not least of which dad's mock turtleneck, but i'll stop shitting up this thread now

I wanna publish memes and rage against machimes (rip van wanko), Thursday, 30 January 2020 19:57 (six years ago)

it may sound harsh, but the revolution will not be a success without the destruction of the family as a concept

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 30 January 2020 20:44 (six years ago)

I love the bit at the very beginning where she and her brother just fall around laughing, but then at some point her laugh stops being a teenager goofing around and becomes this hollow sardonic supervillain laugh and then Bad Guy immediately kicks in.

If we do look back on this record at the end of the decade as one of those records that changed pop then it's immediately apparent from the very beginning. Just binning the permagrinning champagne maximalism of so much of the previous decade, it already sounds like a generational shift.

Matt DC, Thursday, 30 January 2020 21:44 (six years ago)

Oh it turns out I already made that last point several months ago.

Matt DC, Thursday, 30 January 2020 21:46 (six years ago)

it's a great otm point, deserved to be made again

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 30 January 2020 21:51 (six years ago)

yes^^^

brimstead, Thursday, 30 January 2020 22:43 (six years ago)

Even in light of Lorde?

dad genes (morrisp), Thursday, 30 January 2020 22:46 (six years ago)

(I’m not knocking BE or calling her derivative, but she feels very post-Lorde to me, not something radically new on the pop landscape.)

dad genes (morrisp), Thursday, 30 January 2020 22:48 (six years ago)

the sadboi movement was huge, arguably having broken into the mainstream, and preceded billie by years

I wanna publish memes and rage against machimes (rip van wanko), Thursday, 30 January 2020 23:41 (six years ago)

eilish still feels fairly radical in the current pop landscape even though lorde is an obvious predecessor

ufo, Thursday, 30 January 2020 23:48 (six years ago)

sky and lana?

I wanna publish memes and rage against machimes (rip van wanko), Thursday, 30 January 2020 23:49 (six years ago)

Nirvana had precedents as well but it didn't stop Smells Like Teen Spirit feeling like one of those generational watershed moments, the point where things suddenly snap into focus and become huge.

Matt DC, Thursday, 30 January 2020 23:52 (six years ago)

sky was never mainstream and i don't think lana shares much in common musically

ufo, Friday, 31 January 2020 00:05 (six years ago)

thank god

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 31 January 2020 06:40 (six years ago)

Is it even possible to have generational watershed moments in pop music these days with the all of the genre and scene fragmentation that the internet has wrought? I feel like the social phenomenon that was Smells Like Teen Spirit won't happen in a purely musical medium in the future.

octobeard, Friday, 31 January 2020 09:38 (six years ago)

next cultural shift will take place in a Youtube toy unboxing video

otm into winter (rip van wanko), Thursday, 6 February 2020 00:02 (six years ago)

Wow, nice clickbait. Wonder how many shoes it sells them.

Side note: I had to look up "rap cap" and while I did find a definition, I wasn't able to track down an origin. Anyone know?
