Boy, is that great. Great video, too. (Song pairs well with the new Pearl Jam ...)

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 24 January 2020 17:37 (six years ago)

I hope my daughter likes this.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 24 January 2020 17:38 (six years ago)

I happily listened to it like 10 times in a row yesterday. m bison, what are your lame comparisons? I hear a little Kate Bush and Alanis Morissette in the vocals in various parts.

My bestie said St Vincent

... that's Traore! (Neanderthal), Friday, 24 January 2020 17:59 (six years ago)

good call.

☮️ (peace, man), Friday, 24 January 2020 20:45 (six years ago)

Yup, this is great. I hear those Kate Bush echoes too (which seem to be everywhere the last few years), but the pulsing beat is a new and welcome thing.

i like this better than any st vincent i've ever heard

kate bush! and latter-era radiohead.

majority whip, majority nae nae (m bison), Friday, 24 January 2020 22:16 (six years ago)

oh and the breathy part reminds me of tour de france by kraftwerk

majority whip, majority nae nae (m bison), Friday, 24 January 2020 22:16 (six years ago)

I love this

Roz, Saturday, 25 January 2020 13:25 (six years ago)

xp: I had been thinking Meredith Monk, but Tour de France is probably closer.

Also the one-note humming sample reminds me of the "ha ha ha ha" from O Superman. See also the harmonized vocals on "con-trol" and "eyes closed" in the chorus, although Hayley isn't nearly as vocodored.

this is even more low-key and Radiohead-y!

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 30 January 2020 17:22 (six years ago)

Holy shit, Hayley! Can't wait to listen to this.

☮️ (peace, man), Thursday, 30 January 2020 17:59 (six years ago)

(the "holy shit" because I'm surprised that she released another one this soon)

☮️ (peace, man), Thursday, 30 January 2020 18:00 (six years ago)

i wasn't as big on "simmer" as the rest of you but this one is really nice

ufo, Thursday, 30 January 2020 20:17 (six years ago)

Both fantastic. This one is reminiscent of Radiohead, but also, like, a creepy understated Tori Amos b-side (“Honey”, maybe?).

Tim F, Thursday, 30 January 2020 20:47 (six years ago)

Not a cover of the Living Colour song to my immense disappointment.

☮️ (peace, man), Thursday, 30 January 2020 21:19 (six years ago)

Another great song and video. She's a very good music video actor!

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 6 February 2020 16:55 (six years ago)

(actually just apple music so far?)

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 6 February 2020 16:56 (six years ago)

These videos and songs have all been incredible so far.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 6 February 2020 16:59 (six years ago)

ok now it's filtered to spotify

"creepin'" is so awesome

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:09 (six years ago)

and "sudden desire" is the best one yet

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:24 (six years ago)

cinnamon is kinda roisiny

Thybulle on the Dash (Spottie), Thursday, 6 February 2020 22:46 (six years ago)

"cinnnamon" is also kinda tune-yardsy

"creepin" rules though

ufo, Thursday, 6 February 2020 23:13 (six years ago)

This is the most ILM record ever (even after just 5 songs).

Jeff W, Friday, 7 February 2020 13:50 (six years ago)

The next song released will be about how much she loves balloons.

MarkoP, Friday, 7 February 2020 14:05 (six years ago)

"Cinnamon" is not bad.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 7 February 2020 14:07 (six years ago)

lol xp

☮️ (peace, man), Friday, 7 February 2020 14:09 (six years ago)

Not feeling "Cinnamon." Agree w/the Tune-Yards comment. "Creepin'" is better but the total batch here hasn't been as exciting to me as I expected given how big of a Paramore fan I've been since Riot!

Indexed, Friday, 7 February 2020 19:19 (six years ago)

Huh, I'm almost the opposite, in that I love all of this new stuff. But then, I've only really gotten into the last couple of Paramore records. Regardless, I love how these new songs *sound*. Who produced, is that all Taylor York?

I need to discuss it with him over Negronis.

The drummer is great, who is it?

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 8 February 2020 15:51 (six years ago)

aaron steel apparently

american bradass (BradNelson), Saturday, 8 February 2020 15:53 (six years ago)

i was trying to get sound off that but is the claim just about the images in the video?

akm, Saturday, 8 February 2020 15:59 (six years ago)

(I don't mean 'just about', that's all pretty blatant; wonder who directed it?)

akm, Saturday, 8 February 2020 16:00 (six years ago)

I'm on board for everything but Sudden Desire. "simmer" likely to be a top ten end of year contender.

Fair enough. Could be that it's just not for you! I find the first half or so to be really compelling. The back half has some very good moments too, but also, I am never going to going to listen to 18 tracks of this, Ms. Williams.

peace, man, Friday, 5 September 2025 15:08 (nine months ago)

I listened to most of the new one ("Ego Death ...") and it sounded kinda generic to me. I really, really liked the Petals For Armor stuff, which was quirkier.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 7 September 2025 23:21 (eight months ago)

I don't think I need to return to this in the long-term, nothing unpleasant, just unremarkable. I did smile at the idea of keeping some space on a 18-track album to do a cover of Discovery Channel.

Naledi, Wednesday, 10 September 2025 12:08 (eight months ago)

one month passes...

Hayley and producer Daniel James were on Tape Notes this week, discussing the making of Kill Me, Love Me Different, and Parachute. Pretty fun episode.

hayley williams shoegaze supremacy

ivy., Friday, 7 November 2025 16:31 (six months ago)

ok yeah this record is better than i thought on first blush. still have to screen out a lot of the lyrics lol. it's fucked that i went from recoiling at "discovery channel" to thinking that's about the least embarrassing way to interpolate that song if you have to

ivy., Friday, 7 November 2025 20:12 (six months ago)

this strikes me as the actual follow-up to petals for armor. lots of genre play and bold choices. i might still prefer descansos as a mood piece and a set of songs but

ivy., Friday, 7 November 2025 20:13 (six months ago)

"showbiz" is absolutely the best song tho. can't believe it was a second bonus track

ivy., Friday, 7 November 2025 20:16 (six months ago)

I thought her "Discovery Channel" sounded a lot like Fugazi's "Blueprint," but minus the catharsis.

Earlier this year, I blathered quite a bit about The Happy Fits in other threads. And just to be clear, their new album continues to kick my ass. Hand to god, I can't stop listening. But I thought it was a very cool revelation that, when she was a teenager, their guitarist, Raina Mullen, was one of those fortunate youthful hopefuls who had been pulled up on stage to sing the Misery Business lyrics.

Also, she did not succeed in procuring Hayley solo tickets and cried. :(

Sorry if this was already shared but just caught Hayley w/ Jeff Tweedy on Colbert from a couple of weeks ago doing "Ffunny Friends" and was extremely impressed with her theramin solo.
