listening to the big boys after biscuit's death last week reminded me why so much of the 2000-era "punk funk" stuff is sooooo weak.

I dig it, but I seem to be in the minority. It's very...rubbery, if that makes any sense. Lots of bleeps and egg shakers. Trent's vocals are slowed down and shifted off the beat just a tiny bit, which I think works.

haha "Rise" is currently reminding me of a dub version of Fischerspooner's Boredoms cover. I need a chance to play this LOUD at a club or something (er, prior/post people-on-the-dancefloor obv).

RIYL: The scene in "Risky Business" where Tom Cruise is having subruban night-sex with Rebecca DeMornay and the doors fly open and leaves blow in;
First of all, what does RIYL stand for? I can usually figure these out, but this one has me stumped.
Also, I'm a big fan of the Tangerine Dream song from Risky Business, "Love on a Real Train", and even a lot of the copy-cat ambient songs. "Black Spring" reminds me of it. The Global Communications song "8:07", and the ambient remix of Chicane's "Offshore", are my two favorite "Love on a Real Train" wannabes. Any of those songs could be substituted in the movie for that scene (maybe not the Chicane one - too upbeat).
i feel like i should be running somewhere important in the rain while i listen to it.
Hahah: nice image.

I also deeply love Casual Friday. And the NIN remix too. I would probably feel worse about being such a shameless DFA fanboy if they'd stop being such an awesome label.

OTM. DFA have surprised my by lasting this long without fizzling out, and even if LCDSS and Juan Maclean have disappointed with their full-lengths (at least by the ridiculously high standard they set with the early singles), they've more than made up for it with the less-hyped stuff (the Pixeltan and JOY singles, Dela & Gavin/BLF, the new Black Dice which has come out of nowhere and utterly gobsmacked me, etc). And trendiness aside, they're one of the few labels I follow that has an output that's consistent enough that I can justify picking up every CD release the day it comes out...
