?? Straight Outta Compton has tons of samples!!

some of the songs on Straight Outta Compton have a sample or three, only two or three use a bunch in Bomb Squad-influenced fashion, and he made idk a couple of hundred records that aren't Straight Outta Compton

don't care didn't ask still clappin (sic), Tuesday, 31 December 2019 08:36 (six years ago)

there's probably as much sampling on The Chronic as on his previous records added together

Pitchfork being so psyched that Obama shares some of their musical taste really sums them up about now in a way.

I don’t get why “Con Altura” is the year’s consensus Rosalía track, when “Aute Cuture” is such a hotter jam!

xpost to sic in the era of sampling he was using a few samples per track like in line with most producers

yeah my point re Dre is that he had a fairly brief period of sampling (ie once he could afford it), mostly used them very sparingly when he did*, and The Chronic was probably the peak of his sampling period, not a throwing off of shackles to which he had been inexorably bound for eight years -- and his additionally using live playing on The Chronic was standard across his career to date, not an unprecedented innovation

* the track 100 Miles & Runnin' is a WILD outlier

don't care didn't ask still clappin (sic), Thursday, 2 January 2020 21:16 (six years ago)

Yo, man, that's the formula

The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 2 January 2020 21:17 (six years ago)

The Dre productions from 1987-1991 are absolutely bursting with samples. He was a Bomb Squad fan. Suggesting otherwise is insanity.

The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 2 January 2020 21:18 (six years ago)

There's parts of the 8-Ball remix that are like Steinski or something, foh with that

The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 2 January 2020 21:20 (six years ago)

dre has consistently sampled throughout his entire career. getting musicians to come in and replay a loop of a leon haywood or david axelrod record is "technically" not sampling outright, but c'mon.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Thursday, 2 January 2020 21:26 (six years ago)

(also love how the main JB sample is from an outtake/"untitled instrumental" that was first released *that year*)

anyway yeah I agree w ums and whiney that this isn't really accurate

Did you hear Dave Grohl recruited the surviving members of Nirvana, along with other individual people that do have actual names, for a performance?

Evan, Thursday, 2 January 2020 22:02 (six years ago)

OK so I guess there were technically players besides the core 3 but it sounds like an intentional way to frame it to get better SEO than simply "Krist Novoselic". I was amused by this.

Evan, Thursday, 2 January 2020 22:08 (six years ago)

Dave should bring in all the old Nirvana drummers

While k bye for now may not have much new information, it builds on our understanding of Grande as an artist.

not to pick on this particular reviewer, but this sentence sort of sums up the trend toward treating pop artists as Rolling Stone used to treat, say, Jackson Browne back in the 70s.

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Tuesday, 7 January 2020 15:24 (six years ago)

reports of the death of rockism greatly exaggerated

Paul Ponzi, Tuesday, 7 January 2020 17:08 (six years ago)

the peter gabriel sunday review was really good imo

525,600 gecs (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 7 January 2020 17:38 (six years ago)

xxp Yeah, the Ariana review is fine -- but the overarching theme of whether "we need" a live album (or whether it's "necessary") is strange, especially considering it's a digital-only release, aimed mainly at fans, etc.

Karin Hellqvist – Flock 6.8
Kanye West – Jesus Is Born 7.4

Truly a Catholic reach.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 8 January 2020 14:38 (six years ago)

Lol. The write up of the former reads more like a 7.6 tbf, have you heard it?

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 8 January 2020 14:46 (six years ago)

Not yet, but I'm a fan of most of those composers and can hardly imagine their works for solo violin & electronics being less compelling than Jesus Is Fucking Born.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 8 January 2020 14:50 (six years ago)

Hear, hear.

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 8 January 2020 14:55 (six years ago)

There is an egregious grammar mistake in the first paragraph of that Kanye review.

totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation (DJP), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 15:02 (six years ago)

Actually there are two (though one may be better classified as "incorrect use of idiom" rather than "incorrect grammar")

totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation (DJP), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 15:03 (six years ago)

lmao at the description of the choir, which really comes across like the author has never actually heard a choir before

totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation (DJP), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 15:23 (six years ago)

The author also likes putting ideas in opposition that actually reinforce each other

totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation (DJP), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 15:25 (six years ago)

For someone who built his earliest songs out of extracting vocal loops from obscure, sometimes decades-old songs, Kanye has seen the way musicians can be resurrected and given new life.

this sentence hurts my brain

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 15:32 (six years ago)

It's SO BAD

(yes, I know the real answer.)

Or at least giving it to someone who knows what a choir is and therefore wouldn't write The Sunday Service Choir as a whole also seems to be taking cues from groups with no real lead singer like the Fisk Jubilee Singers, the Dixie Hummingbirds, and the Blind Boys of Alabama as if it was searing insight.

totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation (DJP), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 15:36 (six years ago)

"On this album, the choir... performs as a choir." /galaxy brain

totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation (DJP), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 15:37 (six years ago)

I graded too many student papers recently to read more than a paragraph of this. Or at any rate, the opening of the second one made me genuinely sad.

rob, Wednesday, 8 January 2020 15:39 (six years ago)

"he fuses two seemingly disparate venues: the club and the church."

wow, very cool to see someone fusing gospel influences into secular R&B and hip hop - very innovative, never heard of that before
