i thought only Bamboozle Fest Fall Out Bros with the big text T-shirts listened to that shit, and no one who actually listened to, like, any indie band that stereogum would cover

― Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, June 21, 2009 1:58 AM (21 minutes ago)

whiney's otm here, i can't see anyone who facies themself a hipster liking this song, it's more the warped-tour types

I've been meaning to make a shipley-style Idolator post where I categorize the 30 types of hipster so we stop just calling all these disparate groups "hipsters"

WOULD READ, MIGHT LAUGH.

3oh!3 just seems like next-decade sugar ray -- which means more electro-disco and whatever. frat-party warped-tour bad-beer and all that, but ilx 2019 will be repping it.

Pizza Hut is slicing the "pizza" from its boxes and some store signs. The fast food chain will now brand some stores as simply "The Hut."

lol i totally assumed they were gonna chop "hut" because who tf uses that word any more ever

autogucci cru (deej), Sunday, 21 June 2009 09:01 (fourteen years ago) link

I've only just heard this and Deej OTM. Expected this to be annoying in an awesome, boshing, insanely catchy way and instead it's just annoying in a really half-arsed sub-Flight of the Conchords way.

Matt DC, Sunday, 21 June 2009 13:24 (fourteen years ago) link

this is not about radio play, it's about embracing a novelty electronic song in a slightly ironic wacky way, which applies to both Doc Martin hipsters in 94 re sagat and keffiyah kidz in 09 re wacky fast food song

I think you are overthinking this man - it's more about "there have always been novelty records and people dig a good novelty record every now and then" & moreover the pop charts have pretty much vaccinated themselves against good novelty records so if you're gonna enjoy a nice stupid summer novelty jam it's gonna have to come from homemade style stuff

IOW it doesn't really have much to do with hipsters except that they're the ones making the novelty records. if Rick Dees wants to get off his ass and write a good sequel to "Disco Duck," everybody'll throw down for that too for for the time being it's people who claim Brooklyn comin w/insightful wry observations about the intersections of commercial culture & personal interaction

look for my presentation on this in Seattle this year

What's the buy one get one free offer on the right? Might go for that instead

PS this song is shit and at the risk of Tuomasing it all up I don't get why it's supposed to be funny

i don't know if you're 15 or something like the rest of the autogoon cru or whatever, but flannel dudes at my school were def doing the "maaaan... funk dat" thing for about 6 weeks.

fyi i'm maybe 2 years younger than you, and i do remember kids in middle school quoting "Funk Dat" but i think it was more from it being on Beavis & Butthead than that they were indie kids and it was an 'electronic' hit (is hip house really electronic music? i have no idea)

some dude, Sunday, 21 June 2009 15:14 (fourteen years ago) link

billstevejim, Monday, 22 June 2009 05:43 (fourteen years ago) link

p.s. prolly xpost, dont feel like reading thru this thread, but the original version is quite terrible, while the wallpaper remix is something i totally wanted to dismiss as shit but i'm simply unable to resist, while remaining completely aware that it contains numerous similarities to Electric Six's "Danger! High Voltage" including an off-key tenor sax solo

billstevejim, Monday, 22 June 2009 05:46 (fourteen years ago) link

Pizza Hut has recently expanded its menu beyond pizza to include pasta, giving it some reason to alter its branding. Media and advertising trade publication MediaWeek characterized the name change as an attempt to transform its stores into hip hangouts.

whiney g. gordon liddy (J0rdan S.), Monday, 22 June 2009 06:28 (fourteen years ago) link

i think the wallpaper remix is a nice production job but i cant get with the song as a whole. okay, i get it, it's supposed to be a joke and rapping is funnie, right, but at least be a competent rapper to make it interesting. i cant give their (imo) dearth of technical ability a free pass just cuz it's supposed to be a joke.

I really enjoyed DR's music but it's been pretty clear for the last couple years that they weren't enjoying what they were doing together. I don't remember the last time I saw a band get as jaded as quickly as these guys have

I will miss their brand of hip-hop, though. I know a lot of people dismiss them but I always found them refreshing. my ears are probably broken though

Huh. Tried to see them at the Virgin Festival back in October and their set got cancelled. We got told they broke up, but I never heard anything about it after that so figured it was a joke.

i like them a lot (unashamedly), but this doesn't really bum me out 'cause i've listened to their solo tapes more than the DR stuff.
