as much as I like that album I do get a "this is the one right before the amazing one" vibe from it
― Simon H., Wednesday, 13 November 2019 18:13 (four years ago) link
that’s probably/hopefully true

Anyone at Dashboard tonight? O-O

― Mordy, Friday, 15 November 2019 20:42 (four years ago) link
what did u think about the now is then is now releases? i only listened through once but wasn't super blown away...
― Mordy, Friday, 15 November 2019 20:44 (four years ago) link
No, me neither. I think he was quite self aware about how little people seemed to respond to them. It just seemed a very personal mission. The venue tonight is a Catholic Church, which is cool! Aaw Mordy if me and LJ ever come to the US we’ll try to time it with a Dashboard gig.
― tangenttangent, Friday, 15 November 2019 20:46 (four years ago) link
is it a small venue bc he doesn't have such a big following in uk or a big church? when he plays philly/jersey/ny area he always sells out moderate sized venues (sold out two nights in philly during this most recent tour)
― Mordy, Friday, 15 November 2019 20:56 (four years ago) link
i think this is being positioned as emo rap but it sounds like it could be an early 1975 song to me

or more precisely, what an early 1975 song would've sounded like if lil peep existed before the 1975 did
― J0rdan S., Saturday, 16 November 2019 05:35 (four years ago) link
xp He was doing three nights there and they sold out in minutes! Last time he was over he sold out a large venue.
And speaking of the 1975, apparently Matt Healy joined him on stage the previous night!

I recently discovered Little Big League and am loving it... totally slept on that, and Japanese Breakfast hasn't hooked me (yet). Any opinions? I know it isn't a 2019 band.

y'all
the origami angel record is this thread's album of the year https://origamiangel.bandcamp.com/album/somewhere-city

holy crow this is fun! "The Title Track"!!

each successive track on this thing = the vince mcmahon reaction meme

i like that OA record, but as long as we're nominating Emo Thread AOTY, i'll nom Oso Oso :) it's damn near perfect
― alpine static, Friday, 6 December 2019 23:57 (four years ago) link
Yeah, this is good. Is "Midwest Emo" really a genre? That's how RYM labels this, though apparently the band is from DC?
― o. nate, Saturday, 7 December 2019 03:03 (four years ago) link
yeah it's a common enough term. the origin of it is that the 90s jangly/mathy second-wave emo scene was most prominent in the us midwest.
― ufo, Saturday, 7 December 2019 03:26 (four years ago) link
after a few more listens i kinda think somewhere city is a modern classic
― american bradass (BradNelson), Sunday, 8 December 2019 17:05 (four years ago) link
I've listened a bunch - it's grown off me a tiny bit just because the vocals and lyrics seem a little undistinguished but they're clearly a hell of a band, I love the video game music influence
― Simon H., Monday, 9 December 2019 05:02 (four years ago) link
Once again something I'd call "emo-adjacent", but on first listen Holy Fawn's Death Spells is kinda scratching my Juno itch, distended and surprisingly aggressive songs with a dense thicket of tones. Not sure yet if the songs are all there but the sound is great. (I guess it was technically issued last year but only made its streaming debut in 2019)

I went from thinking the new Creeper song was a decent teaser to being pretty sure it's one of their very best songs. Them, Foxing and Fireworks are my most anticipated for the '20 edition of this thread
― Simon H., Tuesday, 10 December 2019 15:30 (four years ago) link
Came here to see if anyone was talking about this insane Origami Angel album - ILX never disappoints. They have a Get Up Kids-y energy to them at times. I'm only halfway through my first listen and I am already so excited.
Also Simon otm about Creeper.

Not sure if beach Slang fits the thread but man I got a review copy of the new record and it ain't good.

i think i have always posted about them in the rolling emo threads anyway. am unsurprised the album sucks
― american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 13 December 2019 16:13 (four years ago) link
I quite liked their first eps and that first record. they've got rid of the hopeful, earnestness that I liked about them and doubled down on rock cliche.

man, i don't "get" the Glass Beach record/love.
i've been listening to their album for what feels like 45 minutes and i'm on track 3

I'm a little late on this one, but if you love The Maine or fellow southwesterners Anarbor (their tracks "Freaking Out!" and "Every High Has a Come Down" especially), check out "Twilight (My Heaven) from Philly band Grayscale. This rowdy, driving tune is loaded with those little elements that you'll find in most great songs, like a glorious pre-chorus, a bass-drum fill (!) midway through the chorus amidst the huge harmonies, and a few moments of silence amidst it all; and it just sounds fantastic blasting on your car stereo with the windows down. ("Baby Blue", another standout track of theirs from '19 album Nella Vita, is in the spirit of The 1975's "She's American")
