at least vice have the decency to throw gojira and carcass in too

imago, Thursday, 7 November 2019 13:31 (six years ago)

the vice list has much more metal than i expect to see on most other lists so i don't really think deafheaven count as a token pick there

ufo, Thursday, 7 November 2019 13:32 (six years ago)

yeah that Power Trip album is awesome but weird to see so high. i dont agree with a lot of that list but it at least feels more personal.

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Thursday, 7 November 2019 13:34 (six years ago)

oh haha I didn't even notice that

imago, Thursday, 7 November 2019 13:39 (six years ago)

my point stands that there are certain artists cropping up in all of these lists, creating an undisputed canon that i just can't get with. exhibit a: tame impala but there's like 60/70 that are ubiquitous regardless of their merits

imago, Thursday, 7 November 2019 13:41 (six years ago)

i suppose we have to find the pleasure in the gaps, which this list has more of. 'henge beat' for instance is a good & crazy call on a fairly obscure album, everyone go listen to 'carpet rash'

imago, Thursday, 7 November 2019 13:47 (six years ago)

canons are an exercise in compromise, decade-end lists are not really the time or the place to erase the arguably boring music beloved by a certain vocal demographic from the canon. in 20 years if it's really boring nobody will care about it and we can all sit back and laugh. merits? tame impala have an audience and aren't obviously evil.

tantric societal collapse (rushomancy), Thursday, 7 November 2019 14:42 (six years ago)

Speaking of canon, metacritic’s list is out:

creating an undisputed canon that i just can't get with.

you literally just disputed it

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 7 November 2019 16:53 (six years ago)

undisputed by the basic culturezine mafia ;)

imago, Thursday, 7 November 2019 17:31 (six years ago)

and you give a shit what the mafia says why?

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 7 November 2019 17:46 (six years ago)

becaaaause the sheeple listen to them and construct this tastes accordingly

maybe let's see how the land lies in twenty years though yes

imago, Thursday, 7 November 2019 17:50 (six years ago)

I like that these lists exist. None of them ever match what I like at all. Out of a list of, say, 200 I'm lucky to find 1 or 2 songs or albums I was unaware of that I wind up liking. Good enough for me. Literally could not care less about a canon.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 7 November 2019 17:50 (six years ago)

I fully endorse the Power Trip placement.

it's called 'lowest common denominator'. i'm not crazy about them or anything, but imho tame impala are a relatively good lcd band. they have a really good drummer, and the 'always going backwards' song is catchy

flopson, Friday, 8 November 2019 02:11 (six years ago)

"speaking of canon" erm isn't that the whole reason threads like this are even made? i'm surprised there isn't more pushback to the idea that we ought to keep reflexively making threads like this every single time list season starts up again

i swear to god the next time i see deafheaven in one of these

imago, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 00:12 (six years ago)

Dean Blunt's Black Metal is pretty good but I think The Redeemer is great

Classical Curves is an interesting choice

i will never understand how upset you can get that other people like records you don't

tantric societal collapse (rushomancy), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 00:40 (six years ago)

Classical Curves being in there makes a lot of sense considering the make-up of the rest of that Clash list, it's a very FACT list and the ballot contained a lot of FACTish writers. There's an element of canon construction in all of these but it feels especially on-the-nose here, but when the list contains Popcaan, John Talabot, Sons of Kemet, J Hus, JME, DJ Rashad and the new Kano I'm OK with that.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 09:52 (six years ago)

It also feels *very much* like an albums list composed by people whose primary listening is to largely non-album genres.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 09:54 (six years ago)

the difference between this list and a FACT one is that FACT are quite wilfully not on-the-nose in their lists generally (and all for the better). this feels like a midpoint between FACT and the more typical sort of lists that come out of big US publications. there's still a lot to like about it as Matt said. i expect Classical Curves will show up on a lot of other UK lists, it seemed to be a real favourite among slightly left of center UK publications. generally i find UK lists to be a little more interesting as there's fair amount of stuff that just doesn't crossover to the US (and thus the rest of the english-speaking world) unfortunately

still have never understood anything from Dean Blunt though

also had no idea "Juice" was missing from the streaming version of Acid Rap - what's up with that, was it a sample issue or something?

ufo, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 11:10 (six years ago)

Even regional US scenes have a tendency to be erased in the big publications' lists.

(Also 'Juice' was the one I always found myself skipping so props to the streaming version there)

Matt DC, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 11:20 (six years ago)

it’s a sample issue iirc

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 12 November 2019 14:41 (six years ago)

lol Deafheaven is a great band

alpine static, Tuesday, 12 November 2019 23:13 (six years ago)

I misread that as: lol Deafheaven is a great bland

that said, I’d prefer a single serving of you (flamboyant goon tie included), Wednesday, 13 November 2019 00:49 (six years ago)

the redeemer, black is beautiful, and one nation are my fave dean blunt albums

brimstead, Wednesday, 13 November 2019 00:51 (six years ago)

I like classical curves a lot, glad to see/hear that its appeal has endured. it has a lot of space and drama

brimstead, Wednesday, 13 November 2019 00:52 (six years ago)

Me I like Stone Island

that said, I’d prefer a single serving of you (flamboyant goon tie included), Wednesday, 13 November 2019 02:18 (six years ago)

Classical Curves includes a very out-there mutation of instrumental grime, but it also feels like it is much more than that

Dan S, Wednesday, 13 November 2019 03:18 (six years ago)

it stimulates some of the same pleasure centers for me as Daniel Lopatin’s music

Dan S, Wednesday, 13 November 2019 03:21 (six years ago)

I love almost everything he’s done this decade but Dean Blunt is a hard sell for most of my friends except those who smoke weed. And even them can’t stand him more than two songs in a row. I might need to meet more people.

The Babyfather side project is also slept upon a lot. I get so offput by that offensively tacky album cover for BBF, but I give it a pass because God Hour is one of my favorite things he’s done.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 13 November 2019 06:26 (six years ago)

One of my friends described his music as post-racial and I can kind of hear what he meant.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 13 November 2019 06:30 (six years ago)

never was sure what the object was that was depicted on that album cover

ought debut is a classic. they made my montreal decade list

flopson, Wednesday, 13 November 2019 19:09 (six years ago)

My friends love Ought but I’m still struggling with the vocals.

In Conflict should be many places higher, obviously. I also think the alvvays second album is better than the first, but they both belong

Peaceful Warrior I Poser (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 13 November 2019 19:15 (six years ago)

I remember at the time writing about The Suburbs on some message board (not this I am pretty sure) and wondering if all the songs sounding pleasant enough but ultimately all the same and seemingly never-ending was meant to be some sort of meta-comment on urban sprawl.

silverfish, Wednesday, 13 November 2019 19:21 (six years ago)

that should be "(not this one I am pretty sure)"

silverfish, Wednesday, 13 November 2019 19:23 (six years ago)
