Just caught up with her collaborative EP (?) (9 tracks, 15 mins long) with Intyce, titled ‘Psyflo : Risqué’ . It dropped about a month ago to little fanfare and I can’t find very much about it online. It’s good, the beats work really well with Dawn’s signature style. Possibly my favourite thing she’s done in a couple of years at least.

Jeff W, Sunday, 24 May 2020 12:43 (six years ago)

Thanks for the heads-up, had missed this. Don’t know who Intyce is, but I’m very eager to check this out.

No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), Sunday, 24 May 2020 13:09 (six years ago)

same, i had no idea it existed!

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Sunday, 24 May 2020 23:28 (six years ago)

this is outstanding; i suppose the lack of some cleared samples (the super mario ones at least) and the somewhat undeveloped nature of the tracks (most of the songs are under two minutes) suggest this is more of a rough draft than a finished project, which explains why she's been quiet about this.
this may be obvious but the overall vibe is very Darkchild and yes that's very fine by me.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 26 May 2020 16:25 (six years ago)

forks, not sure I get your reference. Darkchild as in producer Rodney Jerkins, or are you talking about a certain dark child with a Blackheart by any chance?

Either way, it’s good stuff, but ‘undeveloped’ is right - I need more than 1’45 for those tracks.

No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), Tuesday, 26 May 2020 18:53 (six years ago)

was referencing Jerkins; this makes me think of his work with Brandy

I like Dawn Richards and I love her for putting in that second line footage, but it's hard to follow by comparison.

If anyone cares, this is the song that the band is playing in that opening clip:

That's not really my scene (I'm 41) (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 17 February 2021 01:25 (five years ago)

The whole album is fantastic. At first it seems like it's going to be Dawn's most heads-down party album, but then it gets more emotional and weird as it goes along, without losing the devotion to rhythm throughout, so that by the end it feels more like a sequel to Redemption (and, more distantly, Blackheart) than I was expecting.

Tim F, Thursday, 18 February 2021 01:26 (five years ago)

How dare you (have an advance)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 18 February 2021 03:22 (five years ago)

i would love it if she finally broke through to the mainstream

oh wow "streetlights"!

this album is shaping up to be my favourite of hers in a long time

ufo, Wednesday, 14 April 2021 18:10 (five years ago)

there’s also a new EP by Intyce (see one year upthread), with Invadea. this time it’s 4 tracks, 5’30 mins, with features by Dawn and Samantha Mumba (!). mentioning it because some people liked last year’s EP a lot. for me personally the tracks are so short as to be inconsequential.

Blick, Bils & Blinky • Let's Skip The Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Wednesday, 14 April 2021 18:12 (five years ago)

this is lovely

G.A.G.S. (Gophers Against Getting Stuffed) (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 14 April 2021 18:54 (five years ago)

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/15/arts/music/dawn-richard-second-line.html

For “Second Line,” she wanted to shift the focus to her mother, who underwent a knee surgery at the start of 2020. After Richard moved back home to help take care of her, the pandemic struck, and Richard suddenly found herself occupying a guest room in her parents’ home with an album that still needed to be finished.

But she adjusted, as she tends to do, linking up with local engineer Eric Heigle to complete the record while accepting the responsibilities that come with living with your parents. (Folding clothes and towels, which she recounted with relatable exasperation.) And her extended proximity to her family flowed back into the album: Her mother appears throughout as a kind of narrator, and Richard said their relationship reached a new, adult level through their many conversations for those recordings

that fucking fire alarm battery chirp is driving me crazy

G.A.G.S. (Gophers Against Getting Stuffed) (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 15 April 2021 20:42 (five years ago)

NY Times article also mentions Dawn taking an online finance class and this:

“I was kind of like, ‘I don’t see a lot of Black on the roster,’” she said.

But she was convinced after meeting with the label at her manager’s suggestion, and realizing how many of its artists (Caribou, Destroyer) she loved.
