lex pretend, Thursday, 18 June 2009 22:20 (seventeen years ago)

this is one of those albums where while i'm listening to it and every song i'm like "oh this is the awesomest beat on the album" then next song i'm like "oh no way THIS is the best beat on the album"

'watcha wan do' is sorta the cheesiest beat to me though. its such a 2000 major label rap record 'album track' beat

It might be my favorite beat on the album. I love those rising riffs that get overlayed in harmony with the main riff.

keep your penis out that's hilarious (The Reverend), Friday, 19 June 2009 04:07 (seventeen years ago)

yeah seriously! apparently i've been hearding the wrong 2000 major label rap records.

s4rgent boy tell em (The Reverend), Sunday, 21 June 2009 08:14 (seventeen years ago)

I would be deeply appreciative if somebody could point me (on or off thread) to an instrumental version of this album. GF can't deal with the rapping, though I think she's nuts, but she loves the beats and wants them to run to.

lolz, she saw me posting this and DEMANDED that I clarify that she does NOT have an issue with the lyrical content; it's just she doesn't think Kurupt rides the beat well.
So there's that.

she is also really warming up to this "in spite of the rapping" from repeat play

Got told it's not available in britisher land unless I pay crazy import prices. This is why people love illegal downloading. Gonna check amazon now I guess.

i've heard the whole thing now and the wacky bananas beats make more sense nestled in the flow of the record. you sort of get taught how to listen to the beats, starting with some very satisfying but not particularly challenging back-in-the-day style grooves and gradually the center loses its ability to hold

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 12:23 (sixteen years ago)

absolutely loving this smooth summer west coast groove & am v. v. v. grateful to deej for reviewing it (that was you, right?) 'cause I wouldn't have noticed it otherwise

autogucci cru (deej), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 20:15 (sixteen years ago)

yeah that is otm. the album is sequenced remarkably well

body merkin (The Reverend), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 20:21 (sixteen years ago)

Agreed, there's a seven song run between Ohh! and The Appeal that's as pleasant as anything I've heard in long form release this year.
How's Bees to the Honey? Worth corralling and downloading?

maybe, but still pretty great in its own right. I love how quik's voice first comes in in this really unexpected way, with that wet reverb and then he has a funny-ass conversation with himself, especially the "you can fight the temptation"/"naw dawg she's as-si-an/ and she's finer than lacy stacy or kimmy kardashian" bit

body merkin (The Reverend), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 20:49 (sixteen years ago)

i can't really get with "watcha wanna do", whoever said they'd like to hear e-40 on that beat was dead on though.
Kurupt _does_ get a little hit or miss on this after repeat listening; Quik sounds great throughout.

Cream is fucking dope as hell tho'.

probably gets busy with larper chicks or somefin' (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 20:51 (sixteen years ago)

deej what did you say in your review, something like "kurupt tries hard to say nothing in the most complicated way posssible"? or something...anyway that was totally great description of him i thought

matt h. (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 20:51 (sixteen years ago)

cream is my fav by far

zzz (deej), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 20:52 (sixteen years ago)

"kurupt tries hard to say nothing in the most complicated way posssible"

This only really makes sense talking about "9xs Outta 10" (although could apply just as well to Quik on "Hey Playa!" or "Jupiter's Critic & the Mind of Mars"). The rest of the album Kurupt is a lot more understandable.

body merkin (The Reverend), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 20:57 (sixteen years ago)

(although could apply just as well to Quik on "Hey Playa!" or "Jupiter's Critic & the Mind of Mars"

i disagree w this -- i think its pretty obvious what hes talking about on hey playa. jupiter's critic is a lil more oblique but its still got pretty concrete concepts going on

zzz (deej), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 09:28 (sixteen years ago)

i.e. 'dropped by the majors,' owing taxes, etc
