Is that readers poll just market research for them?

jmm, Monday, 21 October 2019 14:28 (four years ago) link

Speaking as a former magazine editor, yes. All readers' polls are market research.

2019 Pitchfork just constantly dunking on the RYM/Fantano/mu/imago axis of angry boy music (Clipping, Tool, Tropical Fuck Storm, docking Run the Jewels/Swans/Kozelek) might be a fantastic act of passive-aggression

The clipping. review tracks with my impression of it. I don't like the timbre of Diggs' voice, and "the charisma of a metronome and the expressive range of a sock puppet" captures his style pretty well.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Saturday, 26 October 2019 05:43 (four years ago) link

Was struck by the contrast btw this observation in today’s Go-Gos review:

As the Los Angeles punk scene emerged in the late 1970s, it was inclusive, diverse, and pioneered by marginalized voices.

...and the conclusion of the recent review of X’s Los Angeles:

The song is a reminder, in a culture that rhapsodizes the early days of punk, exactly how limited its considerations of the most marginalized people were, how narrow its stage once was and how vast it is becoming.

The PFork staff book club must have read John Doe's LA punk essay collection in the interim.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Saturday, 26 October 2019 05:45 (four years ago) link

Yeah the idea of a magically progressive punk rock scene, particularly in late 70’s LA, seems quaintly romantic. It’s weird to see this egalitarian punk gospel shit still peddled in 2019.

Are the Doe books good?

circa1916, Saturday, 26 October 2019 06:38 (four years ago) link

I've only read Under The Big Black Sun but it's a good read, he got essays from a wide variety of people (relatively speaking, for a book that's like a quarter the length of Please Kill Me) and you get a good sense of the color of the very early scene.

The Germs write-up is good, but doesn’t everyone buy MIA rather than GI on its own?

dracula et son fils (morrisp), Monday, 28 October 2019 00:04 (four years ago) link

Is either version still in print? Neither is on Spotify.

shared unit of analysis (unperson), Monday, 28 October 2019 00:28 (four years ago) link

GI, at least, is on Spotify for me. (Possibly not particularly useful information, but hey...)

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Monday, 28 October 2019 12:54 (four years ago) link

Yeah, in the US there are four Germs records on Spotify:

Media Blitz (compilation, mostly live)
I F*#ed Your Mom - Live '78/'79
Cat's Clause (Live)
Live at the Starwood Dec. 3, 1980

This is disturbing news

dracula et son fils (morrisp), Monday, 28 October 2019 15:03 (four years ago) link

Looks like everything is out of print again. The cheapest MIA CD available on Amazon appears to be $42.61 and one offer for GI on CD for $99.

People have more or less collectively agreed that rendering women as pure sex objects in music doesn’t need to happen so much anymore.

That review reads more like a 5.2, or even a 4.2, than a 7.2. I wonder if the reviewer's verdict was nobbled by higher-ups?
