his popularity comes from the fact that people listen to and enjoy his music.
― flopsy bird (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 21:19 (six years ago)
enjoy his music.
in a comedic way.
keep in mind: this is just a working theory.
― Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 21:22 (six years ago)
ppl (with terrible taste) obviously legit love him (and make excused for him), I wouldn't second-guess their fandom. It is kinda sad though.
― Οὖτις, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 21:23 (six years ago)
excuses
people wouldn't bother dealing with his crazy bullshit unless they genuinely loved and felt a connection to his music (new or old or both).
― flopsy bird (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 21:24 (six years ago)
I mean I'm sick of his persona but are we really going to pretend he's not a good producer? I don't think he's what he once was but he's a significant part of hip hop production history
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 21:25 (six years ago)
im sorry, i only enjoy his comedic productions
― flopsy bird (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 21:25 (six years ago)
am convinced that the majority of people who proclaim to like kanye (and specifically that fucking album) are doing so to laugh at him.
― Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Wednesday, October 16, 2019 7:00 PM
What kind of music do you like, Austin?
― shared unit of analysis (unperson), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 21:26 (six years ago)
really shitty, overproduced, self-obsessed indie rock.
oh yeah, gimme that bon iver shit.
― Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 21:28 (six years ago)
are we really going to pretend he's not a good producer?
he *was* a good producer. In terms of the history of the genre I'd say he's a significant but mid-tier producer. Better than Puffy, but not exactly Primo or Pete Rock.
― Οὖτις, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 21:29 (six years ago)
and pink floyd.
obviously.
― Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 21:29 (six years ago)
it's impressive that you manage to post with your head lodged so firmly up your own asshole
― flopsy bird (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 21:30 (six years ago)
i mean like it or not 808s and heartbreak is as influential as primo or pete rock
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 21:31 (six years ago)
and please you know my affection for irrelevant boom bap
I don't disagree. but are we talking quality or impact
― Οὖτις, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 21:32 (six years ago)
cuz I do like prime-era Kanye productions. His beat for Scarface's "In Cold Blood" is dope.
― Οὖτις, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 21:33 (six years ago)
new borad descripsion
― drunk on hot toddies (morrisp), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 21:34 (six years ago)
i actually had a really long post typed out, but i deleted it because nobody cares to read that much. the crux of it: i'm an old school 90s hiphop head and i don't get it. all of my posts in here today up until this point were not serious whatsoever. i do, however, 100% believe that kanye's audience is, across the board, more intelligent than he is.
― Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 21:56 (six years ago)
and yes, he was a very good beatmaker when he first hit the scene.
― Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 21:57 (six years ago)
I know I am out of step with everything because when I think of "good kanye beats" the first thing that comes to mind is trina's "b r right"
― Tim F, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 21:59 (six years ago)
yep
― TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 22:00 (six years ago)
if he's going to get credit for his productions then he also has to get the discredit for rapping over his own productions
― j., Wednesday, 16 October 2019 22:13 (six years ago)

> quality or impactthese lists are only about impact. Quality helped a lot of them with their impact, but it's not in the discussion at this stage, is it?
― maffew12, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 22:16 (six years ago)
sorry I guess that was regarding the Kanye/primo sidebar...
― maffew12, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 22:17 (six years ago)
i still don't get modern vampires being the consensus best vw album, it's their worst - so plodding! - and contra is their best
― ufo, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 22:17 (six years ago)
I get MVOTC now (six years old!), but I like my VW with more rhythmic tumult. Contra owns my heart because of "Giving Up the Gun" and "Diplomat's Son."
― TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 22:22 (six years ago)
contra's the best. i love modern vampires but all the gloom about aging has... aged poorly for me
― american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 22:36 (six years ago)
none of you liked the beats on DAYTONA?

loved mvotc when it came out, but i'm coming around to the idea of contra as the best album.

kanye still has at least 75% of his fastball as a producer tbh, even that poopity scoop song hit pretty hard lol
― flopsy bird (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 22:48 (six years ago)
Contra and Daytona, two albums featuring cover photos against the will of the people (or their estate)/people's things photoed. Part of their impact? Discuss.
― maffew12, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 22:49 (six years ago)

could never get into that. Liked Late Registration though.

still think the first VW album is the best, and it is the only one of theirs that I really love

Kanye? KanNAY more like.

LOVE Daytonaone good idea with all those albums is they were all short
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 17 October 2019 02:28 (six years ago)
didn't much help his own though. no idea why he gives himself the worst production
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 17 October 2019 04:08 (six years ago)
Kanye is terrible these days
― brigadier pudding (DJP), Thursday, 17 October 2019 12:51 (six years ago)
And, even at his peak, he was at best a mediocre rapper
he never had much flow so if that's super-important to you then I can understand feeling that way, but in his early days a lot of his raps were funny and really memorable and that more than compensated for the fact that no one's ever going to mistake him for Rakim.
― Evans on Hammond (evol j), Thursday, 17 October 2019 13:14 (six years ago)
can't we just have those memories then

he's a rapper like Puffy or Dr. Dre, also I'm assuming a big change in the perception is changes in who is ghostwriting for himI mean, Cyhi the Prince doesn't stick around GOOD music because he moves unitsused to be Consequence and Rhymefest
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 17 October 2019 15:28 (six years ago)
yeah, consequence and rhymefest can actually write, and judging by the bars cyhi gives himself...he can't

haven't read it yet but Jayson's a very good writer so I recommend you just read it yourself.

the thing i'm most annoyed by is that the design and illustration work around this decade-end package is just horrible
