he *was* a good producer. In terms of the history of the genre I'd say he's a significant but mid-tier producer. Better than Puffy, but not exactly Primo or Pete Rock.

i actually had a really long post typed out, but i deleted it because nobody cares to read that much. the crux of it: i'm an old school 90s hiphop head and i don't get it. all of my posts in here today up until this point were not serious whatsoever. i do, however, 100% believe that kanye's audience is, across the board, more intelligent than he is.

and yes, he was a very good beatmaker when he first hit the scene.

And, even at his peak, he was at best a mediocre rapper

he never had much flow so if that's super-important to you then I can understand feeling that way, but in his early days a lot of his raps were funny and really memorable and that more than compensated for the fact that no one's ever going to mistake him for Rakim.

haven't read it yet but Jayson's a very good writer so I recommend you just read it yourself.
