New album's a pleasant surprise--my favorite since the best-of or the first couple Blake Babies:

She's got a book coming out too. I want to read it and Black Postcards at the same time and take a swim in 90s indie nostalgia.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 22:48 (seventeen years ago)

this lonely love is not half bad. sounds like her. refreshing, after being really disappointed by in exile deo.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 22:55 (seventeen years ago)

after being really disappointed by in exile deo

Did you skip right over her last album Made in China?

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 23:19 (seventeen years ago)

apparently.

good or bad?

Surmounter, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 23:33 (seventeen years ago)

More good than bad.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 23:37 (seventeen years ago)

hey all you Strohm/Blake babies fans, John has been writing his autobiography here:

http://musicalfamilytree.ning.com/profiles/blog/list?user=34j2mdsgorhfo

lots of cool stuff about growing up in the US hardcore scene in the early 80's, Fer Ark you should check it out.

Of course there is a lot of stuff about J Hatfield as well.

Think I preferred "This Lonely Love" when it was called "It Should Have Been You".

SeekAltRoute, Thursday, 21 August 2008 09:00 (seventeen years ago)

I like the idea of sampling one of your own (I think weaker) songs for a better new one.

Pete Scholtes, Friday, 22 August 2008 01:37 (seventeen years ago)

ohh wait is that what happened? i thought it sounded like something

Surmounter, Friday, 22 August 2008 01:45 (seventeen years ago)

but i don't know It Should Have Been you so.

Surmounter, Friday, 22 August 2008 01:45 (seventeen years ago)

You must've really been disappointed with In Exile Deo! "It Should Have Been You" was on that one.

SeekAltRoute, Friday, 22 August 2008 02:10 (seventeen years ago)

ugh her blog writing has such an irritating tone

electricsound, Friday, 22 August 2008 04:33 (seventeen years ago)

i was fucking disappointed. were you not?

Surmounter, Friday, 22 August 2008 04:40 (seventeen years ago)

Think I preferred "This Lonely Love" when it was called "It Should Have Been You".

geez, wow. I thought the link was mixed up, but, nope.

I'll probably buy her book, but her writing on her site is pretty something. Not surprising, maybe, and nicely... expansive.

three weeks pass...

I actually think 'Exile' is one of her best, although I completely understand the dismay at the (over)production. I still listen to it quite often - 'Tourist', 'Sunshine' and 'Jamie' are faves - and have listened to it many more times than 'Made In China'...

Investment bankers are falling from the sky! (SeekAltRoute), Thursday, 18 September 2008 02:47 (seventeen years ago)

it terrified me. overproduction can be a gift, but this was paired with something i wasn't familiar with, with regard to her -- sub-par songwriting? but i do need to give it another chance

Surmounter, Thursday, 18 September 2008 03:13 (seventeen years ago)

She's the new Ray Davies!

This is the homeless lady who will magically make your mother understand you if you give her your new pair of Doc Martens, right?

Steve (Not Stevie) (Stevie D), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 15:10 (seventeen years ago)

why does she always look so cross?

I went and saw her read from the book. Did anyone else?

Also only just heard about her and Ryan Adams being 'kindred souls'.

seven months pass...

I just started following Juliana on twitter today, and I'm already sort of wishing I didn't. She seems to get on just before midnight and rambles for an hour like a 16-yo girl about this and that (tonight it's American Idol). Image shattered.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 21 May 2009 04:35 (seventeen years ago)

she did this about lindsay lohan very recently (and then wrote a song about her)

I just finished her Memoir book.

was just humming some tunes from become what u are.

you have to forgive me (surm), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 16:48 (sixteen years ago)

And it was alright.

It's what you'd expect, probably, but none the less entertaining and enlightening, and so on...

New album - Peace & Love

Australia, the world's suburb (SeekAltRoute), Wednesday, 17 February 2010 00:09 (sixteen years ago)

Not bad on the first couple of listens - lots of acoustic guitar, so certainly peaceful. Not sure that I love it yet though...

question -- did juliana hatfield do a cover of this song?

sweat pea (La Lechera), Monday, 25 November 2013 21:29 (twelve years ago)

I had no idea until a few days ago she was even recording, never mind releasing, an album with Nada Surf's Matthew Caws. The fifteen-year-old in me is feeling a lot of feelings on first impressions.

boxedjoy, Monday, 25 November 2013 21:48 (twelve years ago)

I forgot how totally cool she was and then I reminded myself by listening to her cover of "Raisans" today -- but I can't remember whether it was her or someone who sounded like her who sang a cover of Yeh Yeh.

sweat pea (La Lechera), Monday, 25 November 2013 21:51 (twelve years ago)

her cover of "Yeh, Yeh" appears on the Fathers & Sons OST, but I've never heard it before.

when skrillex just stood there (unregistered), Monday, 25 November 2013 22:02 (twelve years ago)

huh
i have definitely heard it before. maybe i taped it from the library or something? i can see that happening in 10th or 11th gr.

sweat pea (La Lechera), Monday, 25 November 2013 22:04 (twelve years ago)

one year passes...

I was way into her in the '90s. I'm surprised to discover that I might be even more into her '90s material now than I was back in the day. Only Everything was particularly slept on by me. What an album.

I never went any further than Bed but I think I wanna make the push and catch up on her complete works. Setting myself up for disappointment? Possibly.

Beautiful Creature is excellent and I recall Total System Failure being very good. I've dipped in and out over the years and I don't think she has done much that isn't pretty enjoyable.

On a Raqqa tip (ShariVari), Monday, 23 November 2015 20:02 (ten years ago)

So, she lives around the corner from me and last week our dogs made friends and I was standing there like, "hey, nice dog" meanwhile I know the dog's name is Charlie and I've seen her twice. I wasn't going to be obnoxious and say anything but man was that a weird few minutes.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 23 November 2015 20:39 (ten years ago)

Wow. I've generally been decidedly un-starstruck meeting/running into celebrities but I honestly don't know how I'd react in that situation. There would be some gushing, I'm sure.

Say Goodbye To That Blood (Old Lunch), Monday, 23 November 2015 20:47 (ten years ago)

yeah I don't think a few friendly words would be obnoxious at all

schlep and back trio (anagram), Monday, 23 November 2015 21:35 (ten years ago)

I think I wanna make the push and catch up on her complete works. Setting myself up for disappointment? Possibly.

How to Walk Away is my favorite of her 21st century solo albums, and the the short-lived band she had with Freda and Heidi Gluck called Some Girls is her best full band project.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 24 November 2015 01:47 (ten years ago)

X-post yeah you might be right. I see her pretty often so if the dogs meet again maybe I will say something nice. :)

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 26 November 2015 02:59 (ten years ago)

I guess your dogs never met again.

Sam Weller, Monday, 26 February 2018 09:39 (eight years ago)

sometimes i think Feed Me will be her legacy song, as long as anorexics keep sharing it with each other on youtube
