Just got offered a promo of this. Not sure what I think of the project, but I'm definitely willing to give it a shot for free.

Telephone thing, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 22:35 (eighteen years ago)

could be good

omar little, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

what?

RabiesAngentleman, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 07:26 (eighteen years ago)

"anywhere i lay me head" (the track) is quite ok.
she is not the best singer in the world,so it's good sitek buried her voice in the mix, but it has nice melancholic atmosphere with the production.
not that im going to listen to it again, but u might say sitek saved her here.

Zeno, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 08:46 (eighteen years ago)

two months pass...

sorry to be bumping this but I just heard her cover of Boys Don't Cry and its possibly the worst thing I've ever heard

sonderangerbot, Sunday, 20 July 2008 02:00 (seventeen years ago)

I'm really into this album, but maybe because I quite dislike Tom Waits and I like JAMC.

I know, right?, Sunday, 20 July 2008 19:05 (seventeen years ago)

I dunno, it's produced well enough but her vocal performances are pretty lackluster

Hurting 2, Sunday, 20 July 2008 19:25 (seventeen years ago)

two weeks pass...

Guys I have to admit, this is pretty fucking good for a covers album.

stephen, Saturday, 9 August 2008 06:16 (seventeen years ago)

The liner notes with Sitek comparing the atmosphere to an old 4AD record are, surprisingly, spot on.

stephen, Saturday, 9 August 2008 06:20 (seventeen years ago)

Dare I say...

This album > Return to Cookie Mountain

stephen, Saturday, 9 August 2008 06:24 (seventeen years ago)

you could add a few more of these:>>>>>>>>>>>

Seriously this album is good good good. I think the arrangements are muggier and more natural than 4AD. Which I like.

I know, right?, Sunday, 17 August 2008 13:45 (seventeen years ago)

Like, it's not as ethereal as the Cocteau Twins, it's not as wispy and echoey.

I know, right?, Sunday, 17 August 2008 13:46 (seventeen years ago)

I like how plainsung it is too, title song is kind of beautiful and the relationship between her voice and that snare/handclap, the way her vocals are just limp enough to drape over the occasional jolt in the arrangement.

I know, right?, Sunday, 17 August 2008 13:47 (seventeen years ago)

I concur, this is much better than I expected. Sitek did it up right.

And no, you may not dare

Cookie Mountain>>>this record.

This album is so addictive.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 16:41 (seventeen years ago)

I love the hivemind mentality that dead, tuneless singing is totes awes when it's on an Italians Do It Better 12" by Farah, but an affront to music when it's from OMG FAMOUS ACTRESS

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 16:42 (seventeen years ago)

right.

anyway it didn't sound dead and tuneless to me, more alive and purposeful.

i need to hear this in full though.

I've encountered Whiney on numerous message boards and he is one of the absolute worst cases of "I listen to mainstream horseshit in a thinly-veiled attempt to separate myself from you Pitchfork-listeners" there is. I encountered a bunch of these dudes back when Britney Spears' "Toxic" came out.

Reatards Unite, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 21:47 (seventeen years ago)

hey i'll take that over "i listen to (mainstream) Pitchfork indieshit in a thinly-veiled attempt to separate myself from you Brit-bots"

any day.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 21:50 (seventeen years ago)

does this count as mainstream horseshit though? horseshit surely (IMHO!!!) but I didn't know it was that successful otherwise

Pitchfork-endorsed albums that came out this year that I'll totally rep for: Gang Gang Dance, Jay Reatard, Marnie Stern, TV On The Radio, Fuck Buttons, Lindstrom, Harvey Milk, Vivian Girls.

Cute try, though.

I separate myself from those pitchfork listeners by not listening to pitchfork.

six years pass...

a very unusual but beautiful album, "Falling Down" always gets me

niels, Sunday, 13 May 2018 21:42 (eight years ago)

Bowie's backing vocals on Fannin Street are so touching

niels, Sunday, 13 May 2018 21:49 (eight years ago)

I think it’s a mixed bag but falling down is great

Depressed and impressed (Ross), Sunday, 13 May 2018 22:16 (eight years ago)

This thread really has something for everyone

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Sunday, 13 May 2018 22:29 (eight years ago)

agree it's a mixed bag, not a great album in any traditional sense

but like Lulu I think ultimately it succeeds as a weird but also weirdly moving, weirdly awesome album

niels, Monday, 14 May 2018 06:05 (eight years ago)

there are much worse Scarlett Johansson threads on this board

niels, Monday, 14 May 2018 06:06 (eight years ago)

"Falling Down" is good. I feel like she should be collaborating with Italians Do It Better folks instead of Pete Yawn
