Lust Lust Lust is great, I like it better than the previous records (which were good, but kinda samey very quickly).
Seems like there's more of a groove to the songs this time around.

i'll have to check this out
― The Brainwasher, Sunday, 24 February 2008 22:33 (eighteen years ago)
My favorite rock disc of the year, so far.
― Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 24 February 2008 22:37 (eighteen years ago)
Great!
― I know, right?, Sunday, 24 February 2008 22:39 (eighteen years ago)
Two follow-ups. First, the disc really does have a sonic imprint similar to Psychocandy, tho I'm by no means saying it's as good (some have, however, e.g., the eMusic review). I mention it because L3 is one of the more strongly nostalgic discs I've heard since the 80s revival began this decade, and so it touches certain nerves with me. Second, L3 is, to me, a nice companion piece to the growing indie noise rock sound I've been enjoying more and more over the past few years. I think of it and two other discs as three sides of the nu-Indie Noise Rock: L3 representing darkly romantic noise rock; A Place To Bury Strangers' self-titled debut last year representing angry, industrial-type noise rock; and TNV's new disc representing light-hearted, raucous noise rock. I'm sure I've missed a lot of other equally worthy noise rock discs, but there it is. Anyway, L3 is a very, very good disc.

Brilliant show tonight. Loved their cover of Stereolab's "French Disko" too.
― Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 08:36 (eighteen years ago)
I kinda regret being so drunk when I saw them, I can't remember much about the gig, and lots of people are saying they were great live!
― Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 11:24 (eighteen years ago)
Eh, this is okay. The way they use vocals to balance the mood/sound out strikes me as an improvement on JAMC, but some of these songs (and it's a relatively short album) aren't holding my attention.
― _Rockist__Scientist_, Sunday, 16 March 2008 22:13 (eighteen years ago)
Best album of the year, so far.
― stephen, Monday, 17 March 2008 00:41 (eighteen years ago)
^^^ Agreed.
it's a relatively short album . . . (but some of the songs) aren't holding my attention.
I'd say it's economical and compact. And the high points -- e.g., Aly Walk With Me, Dead Sound, You Want The Candy, Sad Transmission -- are very, very high.
― Daniel, Esq., Monday, 17 March 2008 01:30 (eighteen years ago)
wow, i didn't realise they were my favourites until you just said it. well done.
― I know, right?, Monday, 17 March 2008 03:58 (eighteen years ago)
^^that reads as sarcasm but it isn't I swear
'you want the candy' is taking the whole j and m chain thing a little too far, for mine.
best of the year would be a big call. i'll settle on a pleasing set of songs for now
― Charlie Howard, Monday, 17 March 2008 04:01 (eighteen years ago)
i like how every interview with them I've read has included a list of their very obvious influences VU ronnettes buddy holly mbv jamc shangrilas etc
― I know, right?, Monday, 17 March 2008 04:03 (eighteen years ago)
haha totally. if ever a band's influences are gonna speak for themselves it's these guys
― Charlie Howard, Monday, 17 March 2008 04:07 (eighteen years ago)
x-post
Talk about telegraphing an already obvious influence. However, in all honesty I do like that song. I would also add "Hallucinations" to Daniel's list of the best songs on the album (with which I otherwise agree), even though I don't like any of it as much as he does.
― _Rockist__Scientist_, Monday, 17 March 2008 04:09 (eighteen years ago)
its actually the beauty of them. Simulacrum I think; I might not have really understood that Baudrillard book.
i think this albums cover art has been overlooked, as a band who have always had really bad design this is a great cover and probably one of the best there will be this year.
― I know, right?, Monday, 17 March 2008 04:11 (eighteen years ago)
while i like this album i do think it's their weakest since the debut
― electricsound, Monday, 17 March 2008 04:13 (eighteen years ago)
yep rockist, i acknowledge it as an already obvious, given influence. just that that particular song annoys me a tad with its even-more-overt-than-usual nod to the jamc oeuvre :)
agreed on cover art

A. No

Raveonettes basically denied belonging to any particular music scene when I talked to them at SXSW, which I thought was kinda weird/stupid.
― fukasaku tollbooth, Monday, 17 March 2008 20:39 (eighteen years ago)
hahah!
i saw them twice at sxsw, both times great but one was just exceptionally well done, way awesome show.
― stephen, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 01:50 (eighteen years ago)
one of my fav songs = "My Heartbeat's Dying", the first bonus track on the US version. so so so good.
Video for 'You Want The Candy'. Really good (quick, jagged cuts; scuzzy; exciting). One of my favorite songs of the year, no matter how obviously derivative it is.

he shouldn't do that thing with his hair
― I know, right?, Saturday, 22 March 2008 23:59 (eighteen years ago)
I like about half the songs on this album but "You Want the Candy" is boring shit
― Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 23 March 2008 00:31 (eighteen years ago)
Candy is one of my favorites, but I love a lot of stuff on this disc.
― Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 23 March 2008 00:42 (eighteen years ago)
they don't strike me as an indie-burlesque-friendly sound
― milo z, Sunday, 23 March 2008 01:32 (eighteen years ago)
lust lust lust is pretty great. obv. the JAMC references are huge on the record, but it works cuz the songs are good....also i was suprised by a few moments (like aly walk w.me) that go into actual hellish noise not just "indie noisy-ish guitars".....
in a way they are sort of doing the same thing times new viking is doing for a different set of historical references (JAMC/Kitchens of Distinction vs. GBV/Stiltbreeze shit)

anyone heard sune rose wagner's solo elpee?
― Minister for Compression Issues (electricsound), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 02:54 (seventeen years ago)
how's the new album? how are they live?
― W i l l, Wednesday, 14 October 2009 14:41 (sixteen years ago)
New album is fantastic, lots of variety for a Raveonettes album, the mood is lighter and more fun, the feedback from Lust is scaled back in favor of bigger harmonies and hooks. And they're great live, too!
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 14 October 2009 14:49 (sixteen years ago)
The new album has been getting mediocre reviews overall (the last one did too).
I'm always surprised by critical reaction to this band. They sound like their influences (but update that sound, and they don't become pastiche). And they suffer critically for it, unlike a lot of other acts that do the same, e.g., Interpol; Vivian Girls; Crystal Stilts; A Place To Bury Strangers; The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart (I like-to-love all these bands, BTW).
Anyway, classic.
― Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 14 October 2009 15:05 (sixteen years ago)
The Raveonettes are better and more consistent than any of the acts Daniel just listed. Anyone digging that cloying Pains album would do themselves a big favor to check out this new Raveonettes one. It's in the same vein (generally) but a much better listen.

Good but weird Raveonettes show last night in Austin. Three songs in, "It's too hot to play drums in Texas!" Next 5-6 songs were all drumless, giving them a more freeform, bubblegum-psych vibe. Each of them did a song mid-set completely solo, while the other just stood there. Three guys from the Black Angels joined them for the last two songs -- "Lust" and "Aly" -- which with two guitars, two drum sets and a fuzzed-out bass sounded thick and powerful. Encore break... then they covered "100%" (Sonic Youth) and called it a night.
Anyway... they headlined the first night of Austin Psych Fest, so pretty sure the focus on noise/freeform structure was intentional. They didn't play anything too "poppy," e.g., no "Last Dance," "Dead Sound," "Candy" or any of their other super-upbeat tunes.

Some of the songs worked really well without drums, by the way. Others fell flat -- "Break Up Girls" for example, which lost all of its momentum when slowed in pace and played with just guitar and bass.
"Love in a Trashcan" was great.
"Ghost Riders" was great.
"Heart of Stone" (this one was done with drums, early in the set) was fantastic.

Raveonettes cover I Wanna Be Adored. It's for some sort of silly Doc Martens anniversary comp, but the cover is great and worth the hassle to download.
