lol Blonde at #1 and MBDTF #2

and why is Body Talk only getting more overrated as time goes on

ufo, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:11 (six years ago)

also lol at Benji going from top 10 in their half-decade to not even placing

ufo, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:13 (six years ago)

albums list is mostly predictable, doesn't mean it's bad. three albs from their top ten are gonna be in mine. obviously most of the best albums are listed in the 101-200 section.

#20 for dj rashad is pretty cool.

flopsy bird (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:16 (six years ago)

Is Blonde really that good?

pomenitul, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:17 (six years ago)

it's a bit less predictable-feeling than the tracks list so i'll take it, there's much more in the way of surprisingly low placements or outright omissions of things that were beloved by them at the time

double cup at #20 is one of the most pleasant surprises yeah

no

flopsy bird (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:18 (six years ago)

am I the only one who strongly prefers Pure Heroine to Melodrama?

wild to see Lemonade as Bey's third-highest album.

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:19 (six years ago)

189. Miranda Lambert: The Weight of These Wings (2016)

only 188 spots too low

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:22 (six years ago)

oh my fucking god that #1

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:22 (six years ago)

And the write ups are just as much about events in the decade as the songs themselves. Like the songs had been originally experienced in the flux of news, and that’s what’s being commemorated. Kind of grim. Popular music always was in dialogue with the broader zeitgeist, but now it seems like these two things have been collapsed into one another.

Good God this is OTM.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:22 (six years ago)

Wow the Lana album that just came out at number 19.

treeship., Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:23 (six years ago)

I loved Channel Orange, but Blonde barely left any impression on me.

jaymc, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:24 (six years ago)

in a massive, shocking upset, it turns out that the number one album of the decade is...eliminator by zz top.

flopsy bird (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:25 (six years ago)

Nice to see New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:29 (six years ago)

I barely recognized any of the songs on this list because I’m a grumpy out-of-touch 37-year-old, so I sampled some of it. Dear millennials or gen z or whatever you call yourselves: your music fucking sucks.

cosign

Paul Ponzi, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:30 (six years ago)

xxxp But I guess I am less interested in the ~persona~ and ~narrative~ of Frank Ocean than I am in good tunes.

jaymc, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:30 (six years ago)

what this board needed was two snrubs

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:31 (six years ago)

there are 5-6 excellent tunes on blonde, but there are also several that are just very very bad (nikes, futura free, all the spoken word interludes)

flopsy bird (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:32 (six years ago)

If you've never carved a flute out of a mammoth bone, I can't take any of your opinions about music seriously.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:33 (six years ago)

also me otm

i think art angels will place above visions

flopsy bird (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:33 (six years ago)

i recently came around on blonde and i think it has a lot of good tunes, it just serves them up on weird thermals or through distorted drumless vortexes or with just some chill guitar shimmering behind it. i need to revisit channel orange, which has never made me feel much of anything but who knows now. two frank albums in the top ten is a bit much but i accept that he won and kaleidoscope dream and blackSUMMERS'night lost or whatever lol

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:33 (six years ago)

"nikes" is great. "weed crumbles into glitter.... rain.... glitter" is one of the best moments on the record

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:34 (six years ago)

i just hate the melody, and the helium makes it worse.

flopsy bird (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:35 (six years ago)

frank ocean is muzak

imago, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:35 (six years ago)

but dawn richard is not on this list at all and i'd rank blackheart over blonde in terms of abstract r&b masterpieces where the songs flow into each other

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:36 (six years ago)

the songs absolutely do not flow into each other on blonde and that's a real problem with it

ufo, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:36 (six years ago)

dawn richard is awesome but a bit too weird for these basics

imago, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:37 (six years ago)

i def agree that body talk is wildly overrated, its placement here is the "robyn fans sing 'dancing on my own' on subway platform" of decade lists

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:38 (six years ago)

I hope this wasn't directed at me, Brad.

jaymc, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:39 (six years ago)

I actually thought Miguel and Maxwell would break through in a way impossible to conceive in 2012, but I guess they lack a "narrative."

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:41 (six years ago)

My post wasn't intended as an indictment of Pitchfork, just maybe a reflection of how I've become a bit alienated from some of the prevailing critical orthodoxy that my tastes once felt more aligned with.

jaymc, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:42 (six years ago)

But I turned 40 this year, so I get it.

jaymc, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:43 (six years ago)

kaleidoscope dream was on the half-decade list, i'm pretty surprised that it and wildheart both didn't make it this time

ufo, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:43 (six years ago)

I hope this wasn't directed at me, Brad.

― jaymc, Tuesday, October 8, 2019 6:39 AM (four minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

directed at paul ponzi who sucks. you don’t suck

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:44 (six years ago)

I never realised until now how far Ariel Pink had fallen from grace in P4K's eyes. I would've assumed Before Today would at least place. That record is still a damn front to back classic.

triggercut, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:45 (six years ago)

Right now the most surprising inclusion to see on here is Alabama Shakes.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:46 (six years ago)

gorguts robbed

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:46 (six years ago)

probably the biggest surprise for me is The Pinkprint because my memory of the general reception of every Nicki Minaj album has been "this is a bit underwhelming"

ufo, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:48 (six years ago)

Also Ariel Pink's "Round and Round" did place at #31 on the tracks list. So he's not completely forgotten.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:49 (six years ago)

Glad to see Malkmus in the top 5

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:51 (six years ago)

― MarkoP, Tuesday, October 8, 2019 8:46 AM (four minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

One of my favorite inclusions, tbh. That album is excellent

flopsy bird (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:51 (six years ago)

if dj rashad (who was obviously great) was still alive he wouldn't have crashed that top twenty, but his death gives just enough discourse for him to nose in amongst the royals

imago, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:55 (six years ago)

i do not understand any ldr record that is not ultraviolence or honeymoon and i’m still a little baffled that the discourse around the new one insists i should think she’s a good lyricist. she isn’t

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:56 (six years ago)

she is the queen of american folk though *eyes roll out of head*

imago, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:57 (six years ago)

No Culture :(

Frederik B, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:58 (six years ago)

ariel pink's stock has gone way down after how terrible and obnoxious he was around the time of his last album. that album was his best in a long time though, except for him saying tr*nny on it which combined with his other antics make me never want to listen to him again really

its kinda weird that ldr has so instantly gone from critically underrated to overrated to this degree but i like the album well enough that i'm not really bothered

ufo, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:59 (six years ago)

I read an essay about it in Frieze. They were pretty enamoured of her wry yet gloomy take on Americana, especially—the writer said—her understanding that Anerica isn’t ending, but already over. From that it seemed like it was more of a Pop Art homage thing tailor made for people who tead Frieze more than it was an album made for music listeners.

However, I haven’t listened to it yet. I will though—I mostly like her work.

treeship., Tuesday, 8 October 2019 14:01 (six years ago)

xp that post was about LDR

treeship., Tuesday, 8 October 2019 14:02 (six years ago)

oh what is with burn your fire for no witness placing quite high but not my woman, which is much much better
