Which is fine, and I used to like that kind of writing, but now it feels so gratuitous. We’re drowning in discourse feom the moment we wake up.

All art aspires towards the condition of discourse iirc.
― pomenitul, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 12:26 (four years ago) link
xpost yeah flopson perhaps any ire/hand-wringing would be better directed not at these lists but at the failure of critics to build the consensus necessary for certain kinds of music to have a chance to make these lists in the first place.
― maura, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 12:27 (four years ago) link
i was more surprised by the lack of country (and no i don’t think one GOLDEN HOUR era kacey song counts)
― maura, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 12:28 (four years ago) link
Why would k pop be on here? It’s only featuring music that made inroads to american audiences

which k-pop has

Maybe it just didn’t make any inroads with pitchfork’s new readership, which is a demographic i understand less wel than i did when it was millennial indie fans
― treeship., Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:00 (four years ago) link
i agree pfork should start paying more serious attention to k-pop but a best-of-the-decade list would be a weird place to start. no doubt they'd be accused of bandwagoning or performing revisionist history of themselves.
― Evans on Hammond (evol j), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:04 (four years ago) link
i mean i wasn't expecting anything more than a token "i am the best" or "gangnam style" but the absence of even those is a bit surprising
anyway albums list is out now and it's more interesting so far
― ufo, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:05 (four years ago) link
haha the top of the albums list is virtually indistinguishable from uproxx.

50. Grimes: Visions (2012)
― american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:11 (four years ago) link
i am always right
lol Blonde at #1 and MBDTF #2
and why is Body Talk only getting more overrated as time goes on
― ufo, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:11 (four years ago) link
also lol at Benji going from top 10 in their half-decade to not even placing
― ufo, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:13 (four years ago) link
albums list is mostly predictable, doesn't mean it's bad. three albs from their top ten are gonna be in mine. obviously most of the best albums are listed in the 101-200 section.
#20 for dj rashad is pretty cool.
― flopsy bird (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:16 (four years ago) link
Is Blonde really that good?

― pomenitul, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:17 (four years ago) link
it's a bit less predictable-feeling than the tracks list so i'll take it, there's much more in the way of surprisingly low placements or outright omissions of things that were beloved by them at the time
double cup at #20 is one of the most pleasant surprises yeah

wild to see Lemonade as Bey's third-highest album.

189. Miranda Lambert: The Weight of These Wings (2016)
only 188 spots too low
― american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:22 (four years ago) link
oh my fucking god that #1
― TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:22 (four years ago) link
And the write ups are just as much about events in the decade as the songs themselves. Like the songs had been originally experienced in the flux of news, and that’s what’s being commemorated. Kind of grim. Popular music always was in dialogue with the broader zeitgeist, but now it seems like these two things have been collapsed into one another.

I loved Channel Orange, but Blonde barely left any impression on me.
― jaymc, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:24 (four years ago) link
in a massive, shocking upset, it turns out that the number one album of the decade is...eliminator by zz top.

I barely recognized any of the songs on this list because I’m a grumpy out-of-touch 37-year-old, so I sampled some of it. Dear millennials or gen z or whatever you call yourselves: your music fucking sucks.

there are 5-6 excellent tunes on blonde, but there are also several that are just very very bad (nikes, futura free, all the spoken word interludes)
― flopsy bird (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:32 (four years ago) link

i recently came around on blonde and i think it has a lot of good tunes, it just serves them up on weird thermals or through distorted drumless vortexes or with just some chill guitar shimmering behind it. i need to revisit channel orange, which has never made me feel much of anything but who knows now. two frank albums in the top ten is a bit much but i accept that he won and kaleidoscope dream and blackSUMMERS'night lost or whatever lol
― american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:33 (four years ago) link
"nikes" is great. "weed crumbles into glitter.... rain.... glitter" is one of the best moments on the record

frank ocean is muzak
― imago, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:35 (four years ago) link
but dawn richard is not on this list at all and i'd rank blackheart over blonde in terms of abstract r&b masterpieces where the songs flow into each other
― american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:36 (four years ago) link
the songs absolutely do not flow into each other on blonde and that's a real problem with it
― ufo, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:36 (four years ago) link
dawn richard is awesome but a bit too weird for these basics
― imago, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:37 (four years ago) link
i def agree that body talk is wildly overrated, its placement here is the "robyn fans sing 'dancing on my own' on subway platform" of decade lists

I actually thought Miguel and Maxwell would break through in a way impossible to conceive in 2012, but I guess they lack a "narrative."

My post wasn't intended as an indictment of Pitchfork, just maybe a reflection of how I've become a bit alienated from some of the prevailing critical orthodoxy that my tastes once felt more aligned with.
