Lana fields some questions about personagate:

After “Norman” came out to glowing reviews, you took to Twitter to criticize a piece written by NPR Music critic Ann Powers, a longtime champion of female artists. Your fans then trolled her. Why did you choose to go that route?First of all, and this is very me, there were a million beautiful reviews that I didn’t read. And then I randomly see this one thing. In the piece, she said that I’d overcome something, and the way she said it one can only assume she meant I’d overcome child abuse. I’m like, “Don’t bring kids into it. Even if it’s me.” And I’ve never said anything about that.
Did anyone actually read this into it?! I thought she got mad over the 'persona' thing (also addressed in the LAT interview), but this is a new one.
― Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 3 October 2019 15:04 (four years ago) link
Really sounds like her reaction was based on a reading that most people would never have inferred based on what was actually on the page!
― mh, Thursday, 3 October 2019 15:08 (four years ago) link
I glanced back at Powers’ article, and couldn’t immediately find what LDR was referring to there; but it’s amusing to say she doesn’t feel like Powers was “taking her seriously,” when the piece contains passages like this:
As virtually everyone who's commented on her work has noted, Del Rey accesses the twin realms of Surrealism and the psychoanalytic most often through their cinematic manifestations
― Spry at 78 (morrisp), Thursday, 3 October 2019 15:09 (four years ago) link
and the piece is a thousand-plus words long

I guess it does illustrate the principle, though, that someone can say a million nice things about you, and the one negative or ambiguous thing will stick in your craw. Like how artists say they only remember the few mean tweets out a barrage of nice ones.

i can't tell if people are being serious that "personagate" turned them off this album

it put me off it
i thought it was just all right to begin with though
― american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 3 October 2019 16:00 (four years ago) link
it didn't turn me off to it, in fact I don't care at all about htat. I just listened to the album constantly and needed a break.
seeing her live on Sunday. we'll see how that goes.
― akm, Thursday, 3 October 2019 16:36 (four years ago) link
Generally speaking, when someone says something that makes you cringe with embarrassment for them, they meant it.
― shared unit of analysis (unperson), Thursday, 3 October 2019 16:46 (four years ago) link
imo artists aren't responsible for their fans being total assholes who are rabid to start monstering anyone who looks sideways at their idol, but they should probably be cognizant those fans exist and what the effects of offhandedly disagreeing with a review can entail
― mh, Thursday, 3 October 2019 16:51 (four years ago) link
She played in Seattle last night and the bus stops were full of teenage girls wearing too much eye makeup. Seems popular. Kind of like the Taylor Swift crowd but double the eyeliner and none of the unicorn scrunchies.
― brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 3 October 2019 16:53 (four years ago) link
that's how it was the last time I saw her. It was kind of amazing. I find her fan base somewhat endearing.
checked out a youtube video of a show in NY last week, hard to hear over the people singing along and the camera was very far away, but it's clear LDR has stepped up her live performances.
― akm, Thursday, 3 October 2019 16:57 (four years ago) link
I wish she didn't rely so much on piped in vocal tracks
― Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 3 October 2019 17:28 (four years ago) link
seems to be par for the course for live pop acts unfortunately. she is doing chelsea hotel with just one person playing guitar though.
― akm, Thursday, 3 October 2019 19:41 (four years ago) link
I like her Thunberg comments. Her read of the Powers story remains baffling but it seems like she got stuck on a phrase or two and extrapolated from there. Which if I were in her position I would probably do all the time
― Simon H., Thursday, 3 October 2019 20:47 (four years ago) link
if you were in her position i would hope you wouldn't read your press

Yeah I’m still not tired of it although I have listened to it A LOT since its release. At this point I enjoy all the tracks. It’s very weird in that it doesn’t sound at all like an album from one of the biggest popstars in 2019 (although it has the most ubiquitous co-writer/producer of the last few years).
― AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 4 October 2019 06:25 (four years ago) link
Show was great, particularly the stripped down and newer songs. She actually looked a little tired and not into doing Born to Die and Summertime Sadness. Highlight was that she brought out Joan Baez for two songs: East and Diamonds, which she sang on, and Dont Think Twice Its Alright, which LDR just sat in the back and listened to. She also did Chelsea Hotel with Adam Cohen who I rightly assumed was Leonard Cohen’s son since he looks and sounds just like him. Those moments made me kind of want her to do a stripped down country folk album or something, I think it’s be really good. Anyway, great time. She’s so much more comfortable on stage, seems incredibly lovely and love able, spent a good portion of the end of Venice Bitch signing things for people who had squished up front.

Rust and Diamonds I meant; zing autocorrect
― akm, Monday, 7 October 2019 19:22 (four years ago) link
might get something kinda like that eventually
Somewhere in the back of my mind, I’ve been coordinating this concept covers album called “Pacific Blue.” It would be a very low-key thing, like acoustic Beach Boys stuff, Elvis, Chris Isaak. People usually think your career is over when you record a covers album or a Christmas album. But my musician friends and I are always playing covers. We could probably do that album in a week.
― Number None, Monday, 7 October 2019 20:35 (four years ago) link
« Rust&Diamonds » is a weird choice of song to make a duet.A cover album would be great though.

I hadn’t listened to it yet even though I’ve enjoyed her work before. This is better than the other ones, right? It’s also even more detached and meta—like this completely arch presentation, but utterly beautiful songs. In terms of like the overall gestalt it seems more lynch than warhol.

The album seems kind of lost in time, which makes me like it more. So much atmosphere, so many layers, even hising behind the Lana del Rey construct, feels like an older lind kf idea about postmodernism, when ennui was thought to be the worst thing about late capitalism, like the album exists inside a Don DeLillo novel or something or maybe just 2009.
― treeship., Thursday, 17 October 2019 22:22 (four years ago) link
Like, the nostalgia isn’t for the period she allegedly evokes, but for the period when people were nostalgic about that.
― treeship., Thursday, 17 October 2019 22:25 (four years ago) link
Wait she said earlier in this album cycle that she didn’t hbe a “persona”? Sry i missed this.

There’s no irony in this? It’s not playing with the idea of lana del rey and archetypes of femininity? It’s not provocative?
