Whiney G. Weingarten at 5:57 23 Sep 19Yeah, was just thinking that like 90% of the rap music that's come out in the last 8 years is some variation on either MBDTF or Finally Rich
I feel like 808s and Heartbreak is far more influential

than MBDTF

Interesting predictions so far. I'm guessing it will be a repetitive all male top 10. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it looked something like this
1. Kanye West - MBDTF 2. Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly 3. Frank Ocean - Blonde 4. Kanye West - Yeezus 5. Frank Ocean - Channel Orange 6. Bon Iver - Bon Iver 7. Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid 8. Kendrick Lamar - Damn 9. Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool 10. Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell
With some variation of Tame Impala, Vampire Weekend and Tyler The Creator just outside. Not sure who will be the highest female artist. Grimes, Solange or Mitski maybe?
My prediction for the biggest curve-ball is that the last Childish Gambino album is a lot more popular than everyone thinks.
I voted with Ten Love Songs as my number one album and Inspector Norse as my single pick. Not expecting big things for either of them, but I'm sure we'll make up for that next year in our own poll.
― kitchen person, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 04:44 (six years ago)
MBDTF will be nowhere near the top spot.
― Simon H., Tuesday, 24 September 2019 04:47 (six years ago)
bon iver didn't even make the top 20 in their half decade list, and if anything its stock has fallen even further since. as far as female artists go, at the very least solange or mitski will be top 10, and would expect fiona apple, beyonce, and grimes in top 20 at least. beach house too as far as female-fronted groups go
sort of wonder if they still bizarrely overrate jamie xx and he's going to be like top 10 or something lol
i'm glad mbdtf isn't the favourite anymore but i would be shocked if it wasn't top 5
― ufo, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 04:56 (six years ago)
lol @ there being an all male top 10
the new Lana seems like it'll place high, sort of a career summation/summit, hit at the right time
― flappy bird, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 04:58 (six years ago)
In the public vote, I can see Bon Iver still doing really well.
My predictions are heavily influenced by what we sell at work. We're still selling MBDTF very regularly, almost every week. I don't think the recent backlash has affected him as much as people think.
― kitchen person, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 05:02 (six years ago)
oh you're talking about the reader vote? i think everyone else has been mostly discussing the staff list. did they do a half-decade readers' poll? i can't find one
― ufo, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 05:06 (six years ago)
Oh yeah sorry, I just re-read the last part of this thread and it's clear we're talking about the staff list now (long day, not enough sleep etc) I was referring to the readers poll they opened up today. There's no way the writers top 10 will be all men (Solange, Mitski, Grimes, SZA etc).
― kitchen person, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 05:14 (six years ago)
yeah i expect the readers' list will be pretty similar to your guess too

I don't know about that, Pfork has been all over Bon Iver this summer. There was that article detailing every little thing he's done since the last album and that huge profile.

i meant the bon iver s/t specifically, they're still well-liked enough as a band but that album seemingly lost its '9.5/10 #1 album of 2011' shine a long time ago

So how do they decide which jazz records to review once in a blue moon? Reissues notwithstanding.
― pomenitul, Wednesday, 2 October 2019 08:36 (six years ago)
I think some of the more indie-leaning ones are obvious choices (The Comet Is Coming, Eli Keszler, Kamasi Washington). But today's pick (Marilyn Crispell & Tyshawn Sorey ) definitely feels more like "oh, so you're covering jazz now"(not that i'm complaining)
― enochroot, Wednesday, 2 October 2019 12:08 (six years ago)
As soon as I saw it had been covered I knew exactly who'd written about it - Seth Colter Walls is one of their best and most interesting writers, and he covers that "brainy jazz/modern composition/art music" territory really well.
It's a really good record btw. I'm interviewing Marilyn Crispell this afternoon.
