Good man :)

I much prefer voting in your own poll tbh, and am of the opinion that a '10s poll is too soon to call, in September 2019.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 23 September 2019 20:32 (six years ago)

Based on the way predictions have been worded in this thread I almost forgot this was a readers poll. I started reading posts like "Yeah, they'll totally pull that move again this time won't they"

Evan, Monday, 23 September 2019 20:37 (six years ago)

yeah obviously it's too soon. fuck pitchfork always

imago, Monday, 23 September 2019 20:38 (six years ago)

reader's poll is why I'd imagine Beach House has a better shot at top 10 than Lemonade

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Monday, 23 September 2019 20:40 (six years ago)

i think flappy was posting a question about who p4k editorial would choose--the presence of a reader's poll usually means the staff poll is coming soon

I am so surprised that there is anyone in the world that doesn't consider "Lemonade" to be one of the best albums ever made, but anyway

Yeah, the most influential piece of music in the film score community (in my estimation) from 2000-2009 was Desplat's score to "Birth". From 2010-present it's unquestionably the Levi. I can't even count the number of times that I've been watching a film and posited which Under The Skin cue had been used as temp score, it was so ubiquitous.

My bet for the next five/ten years is the score to Hereditary.

no way king krule will even crack the top thirty. he's a british white guy that plays guitar; not exactly the thing that gets people talking. pfork is nothing if not a complete attention slut and putting guitar records that high will get them very few retweets.

i'm expecting a very kendrick and solange heavy top ten, though they could just be complete dicks and put fucking bon iver all over it. honestly it's going to be a shitty list no matter what because of the quality records it's going to overlook: thinking things like bobby wratten, king, burial, william tyler, julia holter (i guess if anyone has a chance, she does, but it's not likely), carla morrison, la luz, mount kimbie, and others (all equally as boring). no matter; they've ignored plenty of brilliant records and will continue to do so because it just doesn't fit the agenda or the image.

also lol if you think they won't fuck with the results

something you have no clue about.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Monday, 23 September 2019 20:59 (six years ago)

Well, if they're gonna stan a "guitar band" it's gonna be King Krule and VW over Real Estate and Destroyer

I guess they might come back with a "the second Girls LP was great, you guys!" (but again, as with Mount Eerie, I think a contextualizing back-story has more currency around an album's release than it does when it's Posterity Time).

And also, like, this website has always, by dint of their decimal system, and the effects of attempting toward "definitive qualitative sorting" of albums into an 101-point gradient, always going to skew toward "what is good by consensus and universal criteria" than "what is potentially extremely meaningful and moving (but may not be quite as 'functional')"; I've been arguing this for over a decade, though, and I'm boring even myself at this point

fgti (flamboyant goon tie included), Monday, 23 September 2019 21:21 (six years ago)

I honestly thought conventional wisdom was that Beyoncé > Lemonade

i went for an all grime tracks list for fun.

hot dog go to bathroom (cajunsunday), Monday, 23 September 2019 21:38 (six years ago)

the guitar album that misses out the top ten placing it deserves will obviously be the monitor

devvvine, Monday, 23 September 2019 22:06 (six years ago)

yeah I was referring to the eventual staff poll, prompted by the reader's poll opening today. definitely not too early for the decade, year-end music lists usually exclude anything put out after like early November anyway.

I feel confident that Visions will place very high, at least in the top 10, in the staff poll and probably the readers poll. her narrative, of course, has been complicated in the past year and a half. her stock has certainly gone down. but if we're talking about albums that shaped a decade, in my experience no single artist or album (because the sound of Visions is so distinct from AA) has had more influence on rising artists this decade.

i think art angels will place above visions

― Mommy...can I go out and VAPE tonight? (voodoo chili)

this would be a massive controp but also is conceivable

flappy bird, Monday, 23 September 2019 22:41 (six years ago)

in my experience no single artist or album

flockaveli

Mommy...can I go out and VAPE tonight? (voodoo chili), Monday, 23 September 2019 22:46 (six years ago)

chief keef most influential hip hop artist of the decade for sure

flappy bird, Monday, 23 September 2019 22:55 (six years ago)

I mean my barometer for influence is amount of copycat artists. look, sound, specific gear, approach

flappy bird, Monday, 23 September 2019 22:57 (six years ago)

Man, i love flockaveli xp

Yeah, was just thinking that like 90% of the rap music that's come out in the last 8 years is some variation on either MBDTF or Finally Rich

I feel confident that Visions will place very high, at least in the top 10, in the staff poll

just personally i would not feel this confident

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 23 September 2019 23:09 (six years ago)

Top 10 in the poll in my heart though.

treeship., Monday, 23 September 2019 23:12 (six years ago)

xp you think it'll make the top 20?

flappy bird, Monday, 23 September 2019 23:18 (six years ago)

i would also not be that confident

long decade imo

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 23 September 2019 23:22 (six years ago)

but this is just based on feeling and is fundamentally ridiculous speculation just like everything else since the thread bump today

Non stop chantar (crüt), Monday, 23 September 2019 23:27 (six years ago)

yeah "oblivion" will be top 10 (though that should be "realiti" rightfully) but i don't think visions will be that high (it was only #15 in the half-decade one) or even whether it'll place above art angels, probably both will be somewhere from 20s to 30s i'd think

looking at the 2010-14 list it already feels really weird, like there's no way sun kil moon is going to be anywhere that high still and how did real estate make it to #13? sort of curious whether people still love take care that much as well which is still probably the best drake release but also still massively overrated

ufo, Monday, 23 September 2019 23:28 (six years ago)

I heard they're gonna give Rubies the top spot

fwiw there's suggestions as to what albums and songs they're considering in what's listed as options in the reader's poll. Grouper, for example, my favorite album of the decade is AIA. it's not in the autosuggest, not as AIA or either of the companion albums. it prompts Ruins and The Man Who Died in His Boat. idk what this is based on

flappy bird, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 02:10 (six years ago)

what's going to make the top 10 from the first half of the decade?

flappy bird, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 02:11 (six years ago)

i just tried to make sense of the autosuggest, as i had been assuming it was just "anything that we've reviewed" or maybe "included on an EOY list" but there's all sorts of weird discrepancies so i have no idea

ufo, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 02:17 (six years ago)

what'll be top 10 from 2010-14: mbdtf, probably mvotc but it should be contra, hopefully channel orange will over blonde though i don't think either should be, maybe idler wheel, maybe good kid maad city?

ufo, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 02:21 (six years ago)

oh black messiah maybe too, i forgot it was 2014 since it came out after all the half decade lists

unlike the 00s where more generally end of decade lists seemed to heavily favour the more-established-at-that-point 00-04 canon and there was much less consensus over stuff from 05-09, i get the feeling this decade's lists will tend to favour the second half of the decade as a lot of the more acclaimed albums from the first half either haven't aged that well or have been surpassed to some degree by greater works from the same artists

ufo, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 02:27 (six years ago)

Teen Dream will probably make the top 10, or at least top 15. It was 5 in the '10-'14 list and beach house are still quite popular, so it's got good odds

josh az (2011nostalgia), Tuesday, 24 September 2019 02:51 (six years ago)

I'm also counting on some real curveballs on this list that none of us will expect (like, E-MO-TION cracking the top 20 for instance)

Interesting predictions so far. I'm guessing it will be a repetitive all male top 10. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it looked something like this

1. Kanye West - MBDTF
2. Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly
3. Frank Ocean - Blonde
4. Kanye West - Yeezus
5. Frank Ocean - Channel Orange
6. Bon Iver - Bon Iver
7. Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid
8. Kendrick Lamar - Damn
9. Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool
10. Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell

With some variation of Tame Impala, Vampire Weekend and Tyler The Creator just outside. Not sure who will be the highest female artist. Grimes, Solange or Mitski maybe?

My prediction for the biggest curve-ball is that the last Childish Gambino album is a lot more popular than everyone thinks.

I voted with Ten Love Songs as my number one album and Inspector Norse as my single pick. Not expecting big things for either of them, but I'm sure we'll make up for that next year in our own poll.

kitchen person, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 04:44 (six years ago)

MBDTF will be nowhere near the top spot.

Simon H., Tuesday, 24 September 2019 04:47 (six years ago)

bon iver didn't even make the top 20 in their half decade list, and if anything its stock has fallen even further since. as far as female artists go, at the very least solange or mitski will be top 10, and would expect fiona apple, beyonce, and grimes in top 20 at least. beach house too as far as female-fronted groups go

sort of wonder if they still bizarrely overrate jamie xx and he's going to be like top 10 or something lol

i'm glad mbdtf isn't the favourite anymore but i would be shocked if it wasn't top 5

ufo, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 04:56 (six years ago)

lol @ there being an all male top 10

the new Lana seems like it'll place high, sort of a career summation/summit, hit at the right time
