Thank you to whoever nominated The Angelic Process. That's EXACTLY the music I want to hear right now.

I'm in love with the idea that there is trv kvlt pop and false token pop for poseurs.
I think most prescriptive approaches are quite endearing in their limitations. the idea that even the most lowest common denominator song can only truly profitably be assessed in the context of the artists back cat or some particular idea of genre is one of the less interesting ones tho
― ogmor, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 08:03 (six years ago)
the trv kvlt stans of those artists probably love those songs anyway. Where are the Britney fans complaining about “toxic”?
― Tim F, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 08:07 (six years ago)
yeah like i can understand the argument that maybe "crazy in love" is weirdly overvalued in the 00s canon compared to other beyonce singles, but "toxic" really is that good, even compared to the many other great britney singles of the time, i have no problem holding it up as one of the peaks of 00s pop
― ufo, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 08:18 (six years ago)
― Tim F, Tuesday, September 10, 2019 8:07 AM (twenty-eight minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink
lol only last night tt was putting down 'toxic' in comparison to 'oops i did it again'
i said i liked both ^_^
― imago, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 08:37 (six years ago)
and i will enjoy rolling both of them out if placed, as is my duty
― imago, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 08:39 (six years ago)
Don't misquote me! It was in comparison to all Britney, and I can't really pinpoint why I don't like it because it's a really good song. Since U Been Gone = great. New Slang = great.
― tangenttangent, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 08:40 (six years ago)
what i WILL say is that this time, i am quite in favour of treating remixes separately to originals. this was the decade of the remix after all and if a remix or two (or more!) could make the 77 under its own steam i think that would be important or whatever
― imago, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 08:41 (six years ago)
i mean that's trite and reductive to call it the decade of the remix but it does feel like an apex of sorts

I've realized that I have made a grave error upthread, which I will now correct. I know there's not a snowball's chance in hell of it ever placing, but as a matter of principle:
TRACK

"Womanizer" above both.
― Pauline Male (Eric H.), Tuesday, 10 September 2019 14:05 (six years ago)
To play “dyl’s advocate” — “Since U Been Gone” and “Toxic” do have a certain aura of “pop songs that rock critics decided it was ok to stan for,” fsr. Doesn’t mean they’re not good songs! just not personal faves of mine, but they’ll no doubt place high in this poll.
― #YABASIC (morrisp), Tuesday, 10 September 2019 14:13 (six years ago)
I wondered why I couldn't find that Sambomaster track. I'll see if the new name is on Spotify...
― imago, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 14:25 (six years ago)
Haha, you'll probably not find this one on Spotify, either. My mistake wasn't the title; just that I chose the inferior song.
― icy bike chain rain (zchyrs), Tuesday, 10 September 2019 14:44 (six years ago)
It looks like there is a bizarre lullaby music-box version of it on Spotify, but that's not what I'm nominating.

Great dancehall noms rob.
I decided not to nominate some of my absolute favourites of the era on the grounds that basically no one will know them (e.g. Chico's "Thick & Thin", Assassin's "Want To Be Free" which may as well not exist as far as the internet is concerned).
― Tim F, Wednesday, 11 September 2019 00:05 (six years ago)
I don't think "Faded" counts - I was planning to nominate it but Wiki says it was a 1999 release. I'll absolutely vote for it if we consider it eligible
― Vinnie, Wednesday, 11 September 2019 00:07 (six years ago)
It was released in Canada in 1999 and everywhere else in 2000.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 11 September 2019 00:10 (six years ago)
And it was on an album, that even in Canada wasn't released till Febraury 2000. I would say it's close enough to count.
― MarkoP, Wednesday, 11 September 2019 00:52 (six years ago)
I certainly think of it as an 00's song so I'm all for it

I feel like "Big Pimpin" is in many "Best of 90s" and "Best of 00s" lists just based on whatever mood the list maker is feeling that day. No one knows what decade this song is from.

"faded" wasn't a hit in the states until fall of 2000
― dyl, Wednesday, 11 September 2019 02:40 (six years ago)
forgot so many tracks. and there's a distinct lack of Richard X/Alan Braxe/Jacques Lu Cont remixes nommed (the TWD ones listed so far are my faves though!)
― Roz, Wednesday, 11 September 2019 03:14 (six years ago)
wiki says the album came out three days before Y2K, and the single was released April 2000, which would make it more 00s.
I have a distinct memory of it playing at a summer barbecue in 2003 too lol.
