I'm in love with the idea that there is trv kvlt pop and false token pop for poseurs.

I think most prescriptive approaches are quite endearing in their limitations. the idea that even the most lowest common denominator song can only truly profitably be assessed in the context of the artists back cat or some particular idea of genre is one of the less interesting ones tho

the trv kvlt stans of those artists probably love those songs anyway. Where are the Britney fans complaining about “toxic”?

yeah like i can understand the argument that maybe "crazy in love" is weirdly overvalued in the 00s canon compared to other beyonce singles, but "toxic" really is that good, even compared to the many other great britney singles of the time, i have no problem holding it up as one of the peaks of 00s pop

Don't misquote me! It was in comparison to all Britney, and I can't really pinpoint why I don't like it because it's a really good song. Since U Been Gone = great. New Slang = great.

what i WILL say is that this time, i am quite in favour of treating remixes separately to originals. this was the decade of the remix after all and if a remix or two (or more!) could make the 77 under its own steam i think that would be important or whatever

i mean that's trite and reductive to call it the decade of the remix but it does feel like an apex of sorts

To play “dyl’s advocate” — “Since U Been Gone” and “Toxic” do have a certain aura of “pop songs that rock critics decided it was ok to stan for,” fsr. Doesn’t mean they’re not good songs! just not personal faves of mine, but they’ll no doubt place high in this poll.

I wondered why I couldn't find that Sambomaster track. I'll see if the new name is on Spotify...

Great dancehall noms rob.

I decided not to nominate some of my absolute favourites of the era on the grounds that basically no one will know them (e.g. Chico's "Thick & Thin", Assassin's "Want To Be Free" which may as well not exist as far as the internet is concerned).

I don't think "Faded" counts - I was planning to nominate it but Wiki says it was a 1999 release. I'll absolutely vote for it if we consider it eligible

It was released in Canada in 1999 and everywhere else in 2000.

And it was on an album, that even in Canada wasn't released till Febraury 2000. I would say it's close enough to count.

I certainly think of it as an 00's song so I'm all for it
