Q and Not U - Nine Things Everybody Knows

27/30

tangenttangent, Monday, 9 September 2019 19:57 (six years ago)

so i'm getting the impression from the noms so far that any remixes one may end up voting for ought to be nominated even if the original already has been

but what about the case of trax which were released during the eligibility period (2000-09) but which hardly anyone knew about until afterward? i'm thinking of one track which is primarily known as an album cut from a 2010 lp altho it had also come out on a very limited run cassette single in 09 that i'm sure hardly anyone bought at the time outside the artist's local scene. i'm also thinking of another track which was released digitally in 09 but which apparently no one knew about until 2011 (it placed on ilm's 2011 trax poll ;P )

or just Dirty Projectors

Dan S, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 01:45 (six years ago)

how did we forget crazy in love until now?

wasdnuos (abanana), Tuesday, 10 September 2019 01:51 (six years ago)

it would have been okay if it and other pop tokens for music listmakers who don't actually like pop music (see also "toxic" "since u been gone" etc.) had been left off entirely

dyl, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 01:54 (six years ago)

you mean if we left off super popular songs? ok dude

wasdnuos (abanana), Tuesday, 10 September 2019 01:56 (six years ago)

lol no xp

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 01:56 (six years ago)

are our voter ballots going to be similarly restrictive to our allowed number of nominations? depending on how deep our ballots will be i can't help but wonder if a lot of ppl will end up wanting to vote for things that haven't been nommed, esp if they themselves did not participate in the nomination process

dyl, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 01:59 (six years ago)

That being said, if New Slang places I'm gonna burn ilx down

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 01:59 (six years ago)

"new slang" is not within the realm of the phenomenon i was crudely gesturing at. but oh well looks like i'm an antipoptimist now

dyl, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 02:03 (six years ago)

new slang is awesome, fuck you all

Dan S, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 02:07 (six years ago)

I'm in love with the idea that there is trv kvlt pop and false token pop for poseurs.

All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Tuesday, 10 September 2019 02:12 (six years ago)

disagree with the ridiculous premise but i agree that disqualifying "since u been gone" would improve the poll results

Non stop chantar (crüt), Tuesday, 10 September 2019 02:12 (six years ago)

anyone whose favorite beyoncé, britney spears and kelly clarkson songs are respectively "crazy in love", "toxic" and "since u been gone" is highly suspect of preferring music listmaking as an intellectual exercise over actually listening to music. 100% serious.

dyl, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 02:36 (six years ago)

maybe not 100%. but mostly serious.

dyl, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 02:36 (six years ago)

oh fuck off

Dan S, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 02:38 (six years ago)

we certainly wouldn't want our poll to favor those sorts of people, would we?

Non stop chantar (crüt), Tuesday, 10 September 2019 02:39 (six years ago)

This whole derail is ridiculous. Extremely popular tracks by already popular artists have transcended compartmentalization for reasons that have fuck all to do with listmaking nerds and tokenism. They did so because their appeal was broader than usual for myriad reasons.

Think like a person who doesn't consume music all day everyday. When know it alls and normies find common ground, it's not because one is pandering to the other. It just means the song is undeniable.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 02:49 (six years ago)

#YABASIC (morrisp), Tuesday, 10 September 2019 03:19 (six years ago)

look, i just stated my opinion and would have left it at that had people not responded as if i had just announced my intention to murder a small child. it's a fairly unremarkable opinion for someone who's uneasy about certain aspects of the canonization process, as i am, to hold, and the so-far indignant responses to this position have not really swayed me. in the interest of cutting short this brief digression from the thread's intended purpose, if anyone else really feels the strong need to tell me how dumb my position is or why, feel free to let me know elsewhere or privately.

thanks! i'll try to refrain from posting any more off-the-cuff thoughts and dumb questions now and hopefully my next post will be actual noms.

dyl, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 03:56 (six years ago)

dyl, I don't think your position is dumb at all! I probably won't vote for most of the likely favorites, just think they should be nominated

the rollout will be something else I hope

Dan S, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 04:04 (six years ago)

I’m not an *NSYNC fan per se, but I nominated “Bye Bye Bye” b/c I thought it Deserved to Be Here

I'm in love with the idea that there is trv kvlt pop and false token pop for poseurs.

I think most prescriptive approaches are quite endearing in their limitations. the idea that even the most lowest common denominator song can only truly profitably be assessed in the context of the artists back cat or some particular idea of genre is one of the less interesting ones tho

ogmor, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 08:03 (six years ago)

the trv kvlt stans of those artists probably love those songs anyway. Where are the Britney fans complaining about “toxic”?

Tim F, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 08:07 (six years ago)

yeah like i can understand the argument that maybe "crazy in love" is weirdly overvalued in the 00s canon compared to other beyonce singles, but "toxic" really is that good, even compared to the many other great britney singles of the time, i have no problem holding it up as one of the peaks of 00s pop

ufo, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 08:18 (six years ago)

― Tim F, Tuesday, September 10, 2019 8:07 AM (twenty-eight minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

lol only last night tt was putting down 'toxic' in comparison to 'oops i did it again'

i said i liked both ^_^

imago, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 08:37 (six years ago)

and i will enjoy rolling both of them out if placed, as is my duty

imago, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 08:39 (six years ago)

Don't misquote me! It was in comparison to all Britney, and I can't really pinpoint why I don't like it because it's a really good song. Since U Been Gone = great. New Slang = great.

tangenttangent, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 08:40 (six years ago)

what i WILL say is that this time, i am quite in favour of treating remixes separately to originals. this was the decade of the remix after all and if a remix or two (or more!) could make the 77 under its own steam i think that would be important or whatever

imago, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 08:41 (six years ago)

i mean that's trite and reductive to call it the decade of the remix but it does feel like an apex of sorts

imago, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 08:43 (six years ago)

gucci mane - the burrprint

Much respect for tt on almost all other matters but this is a bad Britney opinion.
