the one chord chug always sounds cool

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 4 September 2019 17:46 (six years ago)

I love the minimalist one chord chugs, actually. And the Carey fills. It just underscores how for all the tightness of the arrangements and chops and stuff their compositions are often in the end just variations on time signature subdivisions. Which is cool, too!

god this record is just so good. great review whiney

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 4 September 2019 22:42 (six years ago)

yeah good review. i love all the six actual songs on here pretty much equally at this point.

big city slam (Spottie), Wednesday, 4 September 2019 22:43 (six years ago)

I enjoyed listening to it again at dinner, and it says ... something that my family did not tell me to turn it off! Also, I listened to it on a mono bluetooth speaker, which did some awesome things to the mix, most notably making it sound (even more) like one big drum solo, which was kind of cool.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 5 September 2019 01:47 (six years ago)

the way adam jones plays the same riff for three minutes straight on 'invincible' while the song changes dramatically around him is something else

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Thursday, 5 September 2019 03:02 (six years ago)

i had no idea how much Maynard looks like the guy who played Dean Pelton of Community

Taylor Swift stans learning who Tool are because they're currently selling more copies than "Lover" is really something special pic.twitter.com/k398YRDzvZ

Dig the repetitive riffs remind me of "Didn't We Deserve a Look at you As you really are" by Shellac

I was just thinking how funny this album would sound if all the muscular drums were replaced with rinky-dink '80s electric drums.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 5 September 2019 17:57 (six years ago)

Chocolate Chip Trip is some good bloop bleep

none of this is anything Meshuggah haven't done way better obv

― imago, Friday, August 30, 2019 1:31 PM (forty-six minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

I have yet to have my "Meshuggah moment" because I can't handle the vocals. But I should give 'em another try.

― Paul Ponzi, Friday, 30 August 2019 18:19 (one week ago) link

I'm not sure Meshuggah is a remotely comparable band.

― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 30 August 2019 18:26 (one week ago) link

quick chime in that years back during a Lateralus-era tour Mesuggah opened for them and during the Tool set they brought out their drummer to jam during "Triad" and it fucking killed.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Friday, 6 September 2019 04:59 (six years ago)

I also saw that tour and enjoyed Meshuggah far more than Tool, even though I hadn't heard any Meshuggah. Maynard sang at the rear of the stage with his back to the audience the whole show, and during a break they played a ten minute noise loop. I think I'd dig that kind of weirdness more now but at age 21 I felt completely ripped off

Vinnie, Friday, 6 September 2019 10:06 (six years ago)

Isis opened for Tool on one tour too, iirc.

I've seen the band a few times but don't remember much about any of the shows. I saw them on Ozzfest once or twice, in a smaller theatre once, in a bigger theatre once (I brought my dad, who was amused).

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 6 September 2019 13:27 (six years ago)

I caught the Meshuggah/Tool show in Toledo, Ohio.
It might have been the only time I ever went to Toledo, Ohio.

Anyway, I like the new record a lot and i feel that "7empest" might be the quintessential Tool track.

Someone on Reddit said they get a different playing order when using Android Auto or Apple Carplay - don't know if it works, am going to try:

Numerical UFO (just in case the album title is an anagram too) ("Rueful Monica" is another one)

1: 7empest
2: Chocolate Chip Trip
3: Culling Voices
4: Legion Inoculant
5: Litanie contre la Peur
6: Invincible
7: Mocking Beat
8: Fear Inoculum
9: Descending
10: Pneuma

StanM, Monday, 16 September 2019 19:13 (six years ago)

Is there any way to buy this album in a standard affordable format? I've only seen the CD box version for €85

Duke, Monday, 16 September 2019 20:02 (six years ago)

Nope. So far that's the only available physical release. Rumored that a vinyl release and standard CD version is coming, but nothing concrete just yet.

That Dio was a bit of a chancer at times, but I'm assuming you meant "cancer" charity.
