They feel pretty well-integrated to me. The problem, as fb said, is that it feels like a rote rehash, like a "new" Tool album composed via machine learning or something.

Yes xp
― flappy bird, Friday, 30 August 2019 06:03 (four years ago) link
XP Maynard's laid down vocals separately since Lateralus iirc. This process is not at all new.
― octobeard, Friday, 30 August 2019 07:30 (four years ago) link
But do Maynard's vocals feel disconnected given he recorded them after the tracks were laid down? Mentioned the recording process to a buddy tonight & he began questioning if Maynard was an insufferable prick aka maybe the band doesn't even want him in the studio.
― Wally P. Doyle, Friday, August 30, 2019 1:51 AM (five hours ago) bookmarkflaglink
why would "insufferable prick" be the go-to here? Tons of bands do this
Liking this so far, mostly for the drums, which are a thing to behold
― Paul Ponzi, Friday, 30 August 2019 11:17 (four years ago) link
I can't imagine being a Tool fan and not liking this, unless you were hoping for a massive leap forward.

Not getting much out of this yet. These tracks really do not need to be 12 minutes each.
― jmm, Friday, 30 August 2019 13:10 (four years ago) link
It's absolutely fine, but it really does sound like one of those "surprise!" albums where the real album is followed by an hour of leftovers spliced together from studio outtakes to make a new album.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 30 August 2019 13:14 (four years ago) link
It's doing a damn fine job as background music between getting work done and procrastinating on ILX.
― pomenitul, Friday, 30 August 2019 13:15 (four years ago) link
Oh, I agree, weirdly. I got some work done with it in the background yesterday too!
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 30 August 2019 13:21 (four years ago) link
A tempest. Must. Be. Just. That.
Ok, MJK.
― pomenitul, Friday, 30 August 2019 13:28 (four years ago) link
the deluxe package with the booklet and the kinda 3D LCD screen is completely crazy over the top, of course, but also great.
― StanM, Friday, 30 August 2019 13:44 (four years ago) link
Okay, 7empest is good. Some actual drama on this album!
― jmm, Friday, 30 August 2019 14:01 (four years ago) link
adam jones was interviewed on chris jericho's podcast and damn if he didn't come off as a sweetheart.

Why is the longest track the least sloggy?

Adam and Danny both sound so good on Tempest. I'm liking this track a lot.

i like drums
― ilxors are still exuberant (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 30 August 2019 16:53 (four years ago) link
Jaz and MJK would have the worst conversations, praying for their bandmates
― Simon H., Friday, 30 August 2019 16:56 (four years ago) link
the drums sound great but what's up with the super squeezed compressed guitars? too much frequency range taken up by that 100 piece drumkit? I still haven't listened to more than two songs
― flappy bird, Friday, 30 August 2019 17:30 (four years ago) link
would describe this record as 'satisfyingly dull'
7empest just began let's see
― imago, Friday, 30 August 2019 17:30 (four years ago) link
none of this is anything Meshuggah haven't done way better obv
― imago, Friday, 30 August 2019 17:31 (four years ago) link
I listened to an interview with Danny Carey on the Trap Set, it was entertaining enough, but he seemed really stuck on this idea that no one can fuck with them because of the sheer time & rigor they spent on these tunes, four hours a day for 5+ years or whatever. Which is admirable if you can afford to do so, but doesn't necessarily guarantee anything.
(haven't listened to it btw)
― change display name (Jordan), Friday, 30 August 2019 17:32 (four years ago) link
Satisfying dull is a good description. Conservative prog.

I have yet to have my "Meshuggah moment" because I can't handle the vocals. But I should give 'em another try.
― Paul Ponzi, Friday, 30 August 2019 18:19 (four years ago) link
I'm not sure Meshuggah is a remotely comparable band.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 30 August 2019 18:26 (four years ago) link
this is comfort food. not mad at it. if you like and want tool then here you go. the drums sound good loud, might be enough for me to stay on board.
― big city slam (Spottie), Friday, 30 August 2019 18:43 (four years ago) link
They tried pretty hard to be Tool on obZen.
― shared unit of analysis (unperson), Friday, 30 August 2019 18:46 (four years ago) link
I'd be a terrible reviewer, I only know it can take months or longer for an album like this to suddenly click for me - if it ever does (but it's Tool, so it's probably gonna)
― StanM, Friday, 30 August 2019 19:17 (four years ago) link
on the contrary I don't know if I've ever really loved an album that's been workshopped that much
― frogbs, Friday, 30 August 2019 19:26 (four years ago) link
For sure. He did talk about a drum solo and a guitar solo/jam section on the album that were unplanned, curious to hear those moments.
― change display name (Jordan), Friday, 30 August 2019 19:29 (four years ago) link
Descending: "to be or not to be" + Tempest: are we supposed to look for Shakespeare references or are those the only two?
― StanM, Friday, 30 August 2019 19:36 (four years ago) link
Excellent album. "Pneuma" is an early favourite.
― A. Begrand, Friday, 30 August 2019 19:48 (four years ago) link
still early days but I'd say the download is better than the CD - not because the interludes are that good but because they break it up a little bit.
― StanM, Friday, 30 August 2019 19:58 (four years ago) link
pomenitul at 3:28 30 aug. 19A tempest. Must. Be. Just. That.Ok, MJK.
― StanM, Friday, 30 August 2019 20:18 (four years ago) link
Ok I listened to the Cobham-esque track that's a drum solo over a modular synth pattern and I liked it
― change display name (Jordan), Friday, 30 August 2019 21:03 (four years ago) link
some sick drumming on this record

just finished listening all the way through for the first time, Simon is otm about the interludes, definitely some good chooglin' in here, and some sick drumming for sure. good background music for reading

xp I was just typing "is the shiny side of the cd on the top?" but you were faster :-)
― StanM, Saturday, 31 August 2019 05:32 (four years ago) link
Listening to the Trap set episode with Carey, I thought he'd be a little more erudite, he sounds like some 70s burnout guy, with endless repetition of 'maaaan', 'dude' and 'fuckin...' was jarring to listen to.
― MaresNest, Saturday, 31 August 2019 10:09 (four years ago) link

“pneuma” initially feels recycled and then unfolds really wonderfully. synth solo section + the actual guitar solo at the end are both pretty sick
― american bradass (BradNelson), Saturday, 31 August 2019 19:54 (four years ago) link
best interludes of any tool album for sure
whole thing kinda feels like 10,000 days but even more sedated and meditative and minus all the goofy shit
