It looks like one of those things from a kids movie where their little brothers hypnotize them and plays it during their big presentation to the board of directors, causing them to suddenly lose control and start doing that and it's so embarrassing but there's nothing they can do until the song stops. Then they get fired.

When I think about jam bands I immediately think about what their fans do for a living. I know what a cappella fans and metal fans and EDM fans and Jimmy Buffett fans do. I have no idea where jam band fans work.

I think they organize and staff jam band festivals, primarily. With a little composting consultancy on the side, maybe.

Okay, having now done some cursory research on the band Everything, I find that I was correct in my assumption that they are (ARE, not was) a group of college buddies. However, I was incorrect in my assumption that this song could only have been written by dudes sittin' around the quad, killin' time between devil stick sessions, because 'Hooch' is from their fourth album, released nearly a decade after the band's formation. It's sick and sad and weird but I really need to hear their early work now.― COOL DUDE'S ONLY, NO NERD'S ALOUD (Old Lunch), Friday, August 2, 2019 8:23 AM bookmarkflaglink

I forget what college scene Everything came from, but I had a friend who attended that college, and made me a mixtape which included a few tracks from one of their first release. One was called "SLWB" which stood for... well, I'll just let you listen to it, because it's on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GclzttprPU(i'm not even going to pretend that 20-year-old me didn't love this jam)

If I’m not mistaken they were from Virginia. I could be wrong but I think this because a friend of mine from college was hometown friends with them and was their tour manager for a while after graduation. During this time I was at NYU and they opened for Hootie so he got us in for free. My dad’s best friends are really close with DR and all the BF because they went to college with them so after the show I would up hanging out a bit with some of the guys I knew and DR and I remember my very very stoned friends standing there looking at me like Dude, is she talking to Hootie? I hate all these songs but that was one of the weirdest nights of my life so everything have a special place in my heart.

That should have said my dad’s best friends sons are close with HatBF not my dad’s best friend. That would be weird.

Everything are from VA. my station played "Hooch" a LOT and before I even knew they were local, I suspected they were, given the song was one of those bland, low-effort songs that only gets play cuz the band has local fans. This is the first time I realized the song was bigger than our area, which is baffling. I don't think I've heard it since the last century
― Vinnie, Wednesday, 14 August 2019 03:34 (five years ago) link
I have no recollection of ever hearing “hooch” in my life. The Sugar Ray comparison is otm. I don’t hate it but it’s sort of unremarkable. LFO also kind of reminds me of Sugar Ray. I feel like ‘crazy town’ is the odd one in here.
Come to think of it I don’t hate either of these three songs but I also have no desire to ever listen to them again.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 14 August 2019 04:17 (five years ago) link
All three songs are dumb. "Hooch" is the dumbest.
"Summer Girls" is overrated, but it's good and dumb.
"Butterfly" wins my vote because I will never dislike the Flea sample.
― billstevejim, Wednesday, 14 August 2019 05:42 (five years ago) link
Hooch is dumb masquerading as merely mediocre. A true lowering of the bar.
Summer girls is dumb, but knows it's dumb, which is the next best thing to being stupid on purpose.
The Pretty Little Ditty sample in Butterfly always pisses me off, because that's probably the best RHCP song (both on its own as an objectively pretty little ditty, and by virtue of the Keidis Omission). Plus every time I hear it I can't help but imagine the thousands of seductions that have been set to this tune. It doesn't matter that it is totally bad; "Sexy, sexy pretty little thing/fierce nipple pierce/you got me sprung with your tongue ring" is enough to turn up the heat for some. At the meat market. At the frat party. On the way home from seeing American Pie in the back of a 1996 Chevy Cavalier. I want people to enjoy their sexuality. I want people to listen to stupid popular songs. But this combination just makes me squirm.

All this talk about "Butterfly" piqued my curiosity enough to finally listen to the song, and... of right, I've heard this a million times, but for some reason I always assumed this was Limp Bizkit.
Now I guess I have to go listen to LFO for completeness...and, wow, those lyrics are somethin else. This is the best of the batch by a country mile. It's basically a Kidz Bop re-write of LL Cool J's "I Need Love", with a whole slew of non-sequiters to pad out the rhyme scheme. Respect.
