Bruce Springsteen - The Ghost of Tom joad

I've tried so many times with this record, and I've never been able get into it. In The New Book Of Rock Lists, among the lists were "Musicians who should read more books" and "Musicians who should read fewer books." Springsteen was in the latter list: "Cut him off until his music catches up with his lyrics."

The research/lyrics/storytelling work fine for me, but the mumbling gets in the way of them. "Straight Time" is slept on, though.

I still have Caspar Brotzmann Massaker, Oval, The Black Dog and Smog albums but think Oval is the only one of those i've listened to over the last decade.

Sod it, I'm throwing one to the first Ben Folds Five. Hugely underrated album

It is! I adored it at the time. I feel bad now I didnt vote for it. "Philosophy" is a great tune.

I know Bill Callahan has done other, much better work, but... I had in my car (and I think I still have in my car!) a CD-R of that Smog album, bookended by the EPs he released the year before* and the year after**, which I practically lived in during one particularly bleak period of my life.

In 1995, I would have voted for Washing Machine/Psychic Hearts.
