These lists always miss “Windowlicker” which is one of the finest singles and music videos of the 90’s let alone 1999.

Corniest? Sure, “Mambo No. 5” and “That Don’t Impress Me Much”, but also “Maria, Maria” and “Heartbreaker”. I’ve never liked “Heartbreaker”, so I guess I’ll vote for that one. (The *NSYNC probably qualifies, but I hardly remember it as it wasn’t a hit over here.)

when i was a 9-year-old in 1999, i have to say my least favorite one of these was cher's 'believe,' but i've come around on that one a bit. not to liking it, but to appreciating it as cheese and a pretty good choice for karaoke.

it's also kinda mind-boggling how huge that song was, considering cher hadn't topped the charts since 1973.

How good did you remember it sounding?

A low moment in my psychic history was hearing "Believe" for the first time and thinking "it's too bad Cher could never have a hit today, even when she's trying really really hard to." Not only was I wrong, but then I had to listen to the song day in, day out for a half-year.

After some thought I really don't see how this can't be "Summer Girls" - just excruciating to listen to, then & now.

this was my first thought, there's something so cynical about that song, the first boy band tune that felt like a straight cash-in

but then I saw "God Must've Spent a Little More Time on You" which must've come out the summer of '99 because I remember that tune being #1 on TRL like every single day...corniness is basically that tune's only trait. it sounds like something that would've come from one of those manufactured bands on the Disney channel, with all those little *doink* noises everywhere

i love "believe"

also this was the year I turned 13 so the videos for "What's It Gonna Be?", "That Don't Impress Me Much", and to a lesser extent "Steal My Sunshine" were iconic to me for a different reason
