These lists always miss “Windowlicker” which is one of the finest singles and music videos of the 90’s let alone 1999.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 17:15 (six years ago)

The coda alone puts all these “top 40” to shame.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 17:16 (six years ago)

i do sincerely applaud the restraint it took to leave 'blue (da ba dee)' off the final list.

jakey mo collier (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 17:17 (six years ago)

“Steal My Sunshine” places on both the Ringer and Spin lists and neither write-up mentions the dialog. That’s the best part of the song!

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 17:18 (six years ago)

the correct answer is that it's all corny and 1999 was the corniest year of all of history

frame casual (dog latin), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 17:18 (six years ago)

1999 was not a great year for me but I can’t blame the music

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 17:21 (six years ago)

How have I never heard that sunscreen song until just now? What a piece of shit.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 17:23 (six years ago)

Love about 30 of these, including some corny ones.

Corniest? Sure, “Mambo No. 5” and “That Don’t Impress Me Much”, but also “Maria, Maria” and “Heartbreaker”. I’ve never liked “Heartbreaker”, so I guess I’ll vote for that one. (The *NSYNC probably qualifies, but I hardly remember it as it wasn’t a hit over here.)

breastcrawl, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 17:25 (six years ago)

― Mr. Snrub

Is that the Baz Luhrman song? He is like a reverse alchemist, he turns gold into shit.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 17:27 (six years ago)

"heartbreaker" is good af, get outta here

Carisis LaVerted (m bison), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 17:27 (six years ago)

These lists always miss “Windowlicker” “NORTHERN LITES” which is one of the finest singles and music videos of the 90’s let alone 1999.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 17:29 (six years ago)

29. NSYNC - God Must've Spent A Little More Time On You

this is the correct answer, this is like half a step removed from "butterfly kisses"

Carisis LaVerted (m bison), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 17:32 (six years ago)

Corniest song title

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 17:34 (six years ago)

Can't stand Northern Lights, completely put me off SFA.

Sunscreen is too dull to be corny.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 17:35 (six years ago)

'God Must've Spent A Little More Time On You' aka 'God is a Tender and Considerate Lover'

my but is not working it kept telling me device not found. (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 17:38 (six years ago)

apparently that song is about their moms, which makes it approx 1 million times worse

jakey mo collier (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 17:40 (six years ago)

Eww

Was it one of N*Sync's or one of the Backstreet Boys' moms who wrote a quicky bio about how hot and desirable her son was?

my but is not working it kept telling me device not found. (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 17:42 (six years ago)

ok since this isn't a poll for the "best" song (so many of these are stone cold classics, at least 70% of the list) I've gotta go with N*SYNC's "God Must've Spent A Little More Time On You" which I don't remember but assume is from their Xmas album, and there is nothing cornier than Xmas albums.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 17:43 (six years ago)

your love is like a river, peaceful and deep
your soul is like a secret that i never could keep

^^^ obviously horrible song, were there no better 1999 nsync singles to choose from? looking at wikipedia now, there weren't, though i kind of like "i drive myself crazy." also flappy it wasn't from their xmas album! it was one of the final two singles from the s/t, which came out in 1997 ffs, it's a really arbitrary inclusion

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 17:49 (six years ago)

16. Whitney Houston - It's Not Right, But It's Okay

if we were voting for best songs

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 17:50 (six years ago)

was thinking about doing a best songs for this when this closed, cause there are some bangers on here for sure.

jakey mo collier (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 17:54 (six years ago)

God Didn’t Need To Create (A Third-rate “Fantasy”)

breastcrawl, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 17:57 (six years ago)

it's probably my age but i would enjoy listening to most of these songs

bookmarkflaglink (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 18:00 (six years ago)

it's a total fantasy rip and it still slaps

xp

Carisis LaVerted (m bison), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 18:00 (six years ago)

I thought it wsd best songs also Shania is great gtf

I’d like the record to state that I agree with this - one of the corny-and-awesome ones (my first post about this fell into the xp black hole, I suspect)

breastcrawl, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 18:03 (six years ago)

Yeah I love that Shania song.

the last Berry La Croix in the work fridge (morrisp), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 18:08 (six years ago)

when i was a 9-year-old in 1999, i have to say my least favorite one of these was cher's 'believe,' but i've come around on that one a bit. not to liking it, but to appreciating it as cheese and a pretty good choice for karaoke.

jakey mo collier (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 18:12 (six years ago)

it's also kinda mind-boggling how huge that song was, considering cher hadn't topped the charts since 1973.

jakey mo collier (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 18:13 (six years ago)

I just relistened to "Believe" and holy cow it does not sound as good as I remember

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMY0k0-D9JQ

frogbs, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 18:20 (six years ago)

The "Dance!" moment in the sunscreen song is as good a contender for corniness circa '99 as any.

Pauline Male (Eric H.), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 18:21 (six years ago)

I just relistened to "Believe" and holy cow it does not sound as good as I remember

How good did you remember it sounding?

All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 18:23 (six years ago)

A low moment in my psychic history was hearing "Believe" for the first time and thinking "it's too bad Cher could never have a hit today, even when she's trying really really hard to." Not only was I wrong, but then I had to listen to the song day in, day out for a half-year.

Pauline Male (Eric H.), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 18:24 (six years ago)

After some thought I really don't see how this can't be "Summer Girls" - just excruciating to listen to, then & now.

this was my first thought, there's something so cynical about that song, the first boy band tune that felt like a straight cash-in

but then I saw "God Must've Spent a Little More Time on You" which must've come out the summer of '99 because I remember that tune being #1 on TRL like every single day...corniness is basically that tune's only trait. it sounds like something that would've come from one of those manufactured bands on the Disney channel, with all those little *doink* noises everywhere

frogbs, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 18:25 (six years ago)

i love "believe"

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 18:26 (six years ago)

also this was the year I turned 13 so the videos for "What's It Gonna Be?", "That Don't Impress Me Much", and to a lesser extent "Steal My Sunshine" were iconic to me for a different reason

frogbs, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 18:27 (six years ago)

Just learned that the Buffy episode that clowns so hard on Believe was released a week before the single even came out.

Mobb Deep - "Quiet Storm" is great and weirdly out of character for this list

OK lol I actually pressed play on frogbs's video.

voting for red hot chili peppers, the corniest artists itt

cheese canopy (map), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 21:21 (six years ago)

they might be, but i don't think "scar tissue" is v corny

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 21:24 (six years ago)

'Thong Song' is the corniest (if 'corny' means "closest to '99 and the song got stuck in '99").

Len and TLC are the best.

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 21:40 (six years ago)

there was something weird going on with the music videos at the time, I remember watching a ton of them on MTV back then and like half of them were set on some crazy spaceship with the singers appearing in skintight outfits straight out of the original Star Trek. maybe it was just a side effect of CGI getting a little better (lmao) but I'm kind of curious how this started. was it Michael Jackson?

frogbs, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 21:56 (six years ago)

len, juvenile, new radicals, and sisqo are all timers for me

two motherfuckers tried to steal my sunshine

Carisis LaVerted (m bison), Tuesday, 6 August 2019 00:42 (six years ago)

for some reason I heard "Tender" in a bar at the weekend and there is not enough contempt for that godawful week-long dirge here. seriously personally offended that The Thong Song got more votes than it

also add me to the list of people who never, uh, got "You Get What You Give"

PS "Steal My Sunshine" is great of course

a passing spacecadet, Tuesday, 6 August 2019 12:59 (six years ago)
