Kind of a cool song tbh

her songwriting seems to have just fallen...completely off? idk it seems wild to me that the same person that made "holy ground" and "treacherous" and "all too well" is now churning out rote, hackneyed stuff like this
― monotony, Friday, 16 August 2019 11:44 (six years ago)
It's pretty sad.
― ☮ (peace, man), Friday, 16 August 2019 12:05 (six years ago)
“the archer” and this are both great idgi
― american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 16 August 2019 12:19 (six years ago)
this song specifically sounds like the alt-country record i've been wanting her to make for years. i don't hear rote or hackneyed at all, seems like at least part of this album is gonna be red as recorded by jack antonoff
― american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 16 August 2019 12:30 (six years ago)
maybe i'm just being cynical but it sounds almost like a song calculated to be put next to "thinking out loud" on a wedding playlist or something
― monotony, Friday, 16 August 2019 12:33 (six years ago)
i mean fair, that's not not what's going on here
― american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 16 August 2019 13:04 (six years ago)
can i go... where. you. gooooo
imo her singing improved again
― american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 16 August 2019 13:05 (six years ago)
I was surprised by how much I liked the verse to this, but then in the chorus I started cringing at her head voice (which I just dislike) and the way it ended with the word "lover" isolated like it's clever or some shit, and then the bridge devolved entirely into the Will Ferrell/Rachel Dratch SNL sketch and I ended up scowling out the window wishing for something to punch
― brigadier pudding (DJP), Friday, 16 August 2019 16:13 (six years ago)
lol
― american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 16 August 2019 16:15 (six years ago)
Yeah, the bridge is really weak

i like this song but i also felt like this
― J0rdan S., Friday, 16 August 2019 16:57 (six years ago)
Musically it's one of the strongest things I've heard from her since "Teardrops On My Guitar"; it's just kind of a shame about... everything else
― brigadier pudding (DJP), Friday, 16 August 2019 16:59 (six years ago)
max martin is apparently not on this record at all
― american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 16 August 2019 18:30 (six years ago)
I dig this new song but yes the bridge is a drag
― L'assie (Euler), Friday, 16 August 2019 18:48 (six years ago)
She just posted the tracklisting, Dixie Chicks on the album
― self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Friday, 16 August 2019 19:26 (six years ago)
this tracklist leaked about a week ago and i was praying that “death by a thousand cuts” would be a real taylor swift song
― american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 16 August 2019 19:28 (six years ago)
i like this song, it reminds me of widowspeak
― maura, Friday, 16 August 2019 19:59 (six years ago)
"with every guitar string scar on my hand" is such an awkwardly phrased line and I don't believe someone somewhere couldn't have suggested an edit
― boxedjoy, Saturday, 17 August 2019 08:17 (six years ago)
Brad's review of 'Red' is possibly the best piece of music writing I read this year.

if you'd told me there was a Chan Marshall credit on "Lover" I'd have believed you.
― Simon H., Tuesday, 20 August 2019 03:55 (six years ago)
thank you nourry <3
― american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 20 August 2019 17:02 (six years ago)
apparently the "hey kids! spelling is fun!" bit is removed from the album version of "me!" lol
― ufo, Wednesday, 21 August 2019 23:51 (six years ago)
WTF?? That was the best part of the song!!!
― Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 22 August 2019 00:16 (six years ago)
I have apparently been schooled w/r/t my skepticism of this idea (when it was floated earlier): https://www.billboard.com/articles/business/8527959/taylor-swift-re-record-old-songs-regain-control-scooter-braun
― Stub yr toe on the yacht rock (morrisp), Thursday, 22 August 2019 01:48 (six years ago)
Pitchfork will have to review the albums all over again! LOL
― Stub yr toe on the yacht rock (morrisp), Thursday, 22 August 2019 01:49 (six years ago)
Taylor been hanging out w/Jeff Lynne, Squeeze, and Prince's ghost, I see.
― frustration and wonky passion (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 22 August 2019 03:38 (six years ago)
Sounds like she may have to wait 5 years from each album’s release to redo its songs (depending on the actual particulars of her contract): https://variety.com/2019/music/news/taylor-swift-scooter-braun-re-record-big-machine-songs-explained-1203309904/
― Stub yr toe on the yacht rock (morrisp), Thursday, 22 August 2019 04:06 (six years ago)
LOL that would mean she can currently re-record everything through to 1989.

“cruel summer” is amazing
― american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 22 August 2019 19:25 (six years ago)
her idea of pop music has been updated but is still kinda bland from a production perspective
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 August 2019 19:27 (six years ago)
I'm not sure Taylor Swift is who I ever would expect modern pop production from at this point
This album is definitely good and better than the singles portended, not sure where it ranks among her post-Red catalog yet
― self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Thursday, 22 August 2019 19:31 (six years ago)
I think I have tickets for the “private” show here in Paris next month? she’s playing the Olympia, a 2000 seat venue. she’s only played one show here ever, on the Speak Now tour, besides promos (which this one is too, though they’re making a few tickets available for the public).
― L'assie (Euler), Thursday, 22 August 2019 19:48 (six years ago)
did it leak?
― Nourry, Thursday, 22 August 2019 20:42 (six years ago)
Not that I'm aware of.
For sure the production ain't fresh. "False God" sounds like it could've been recorded by Carly Rae Jepsen in 2011.
― TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 22 August 2019 20:49 (six years ago)
"if i was man / then i'd be the man" ... not really her best writing...
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 August 2019 21:00 (six years ago)
It leaked a couple of hours ago
― self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Thursday, 22 August 2019 21:08 (six years ago)
this album gets good at paper hearts i think... too many H&M beats in the first half
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 August 2019 21:37 (six years ago)
I agree the bridge sucks, which is funny because I heard T.Swift say in a recent interview(?) that "Lover" is/might be her favorite song she's ever written, and that she loves writing good bridges and she was really proud of the bridge on this one.
― ilxor, Friday, 23 August 2019 00:45 (six years ago)
I do miss the Cornelia Street Cafe.
― TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 23 August 2019 00:49 (six years ago)
Is that meant for this thread?
― TS: “8:05” vs. “905” (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 23 August 2019 01:24 (six years ago)
The album has a song called "Cornelia Street," observed from a car.
― TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 23 August 2019 01:34 (six years ago)
Oh, okay. I thought maybe you meant to post to Redd's Roster of Restaurants of the Old Weird New York
― TS: “8:05” vs. “905” (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 23 August 2019 01:35 (six years ago)
fucking hell "London Boy."
She sounds like Madonna in 2001 hitting a pub for the first time. The song is in part about being a tourist but lol.
― TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 23 August 2019 01:51 (six years ago)
it's really bad
― J0rdan S., Friday, 23 August 2019 02:46 (six years ago)
it's too soon for declarations, but I'll make one: this album has a lot of tired-ass shit on it.
― TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 23 August 2019 02:47 (six years ago)
on first listen this has its moments ("cruel summer" was the standout) but it's mostly so so bland. it's not as dire as "me!" suggested at least but is pretty in line with how dull the "you need to calm down" verses are.
