i just don't know if there ever was a time when electronic music had nothing to do with the "rockist star cult".

tricky disco (disco stu), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

in some respects you could say that all of the subversive "anonymous" trappings of electronic music only serve to legitimize what they subvert

tricky disco (disco stu), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i always wanted to know who the people were behind the tunes, as someone who aspired to be in their position someday

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i have it on good word that it's Peter Noone

King Korn Karn, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Prototype was published by Mute Songs Ltd. so it has to be either Miller or Moby.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

ILM in massive group Cluedo thriller.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, perhaps not "nothing to do", but there certainly was a time when it had *less* to do. Personally, I still don't much care who's behind the tunes.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

and given that both Boomkat and Kompakt mention that the artist is English, i think we have our answer

but who knows, maybe it's Vince Clarke or Nick Cave

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

or diamanda galas?

stirmonster, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

James Holden? Alison Goldfrapp? Luke Slater? Frank Tovey?

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

the diamanda galas one made me laugh out loud at my desk here.

nice one

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Brian Higgins? Boy George?

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

paul mccartney, again.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

And now that we've deduced that Rex the Dog is most likely Daniel Miller... does anyone know the real-life identity of Jimmi Moon?

Chester Benetton (Andy K), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Frank Tovey is not english. Anymore.

Diego Valladolid (dvalladt), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

moby is even more unlikely than Dave Clarke.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Phil Sherburne will know! Phil, where you at?! holla back!

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I don't think it would be Moby, not because he's not good enough but because his production style when he is good is v. different.

I don't think it's Trevor Jackson or Ewan Pearson - they've both done remixes for Depeche Mode on the same single as the Rex the Dog remix. OTOH points in favour or it being Ewan Pearson: in an interview I read with him he said he was doing another album for Soma because he was contractually obliged to (ie. he wouldn't do it for them otherwise), so this could be his way of circumventing his Soma deal.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

so, it all turns out to be rather boring - i got this from a friend.

Rex the Dog is Jake Williams from London taaan. I have his email if anyone does need to get in touch with him.. and I love pretty much everything I've heard him do *gushes* - Den

stirmonster, Thursday, 30 September 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

How reliable is said friend? Who is Jake Williams?

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 30 September 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

very reliable and no idea!

stirmonster, Thursday, 30 September 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

a "who is jake williams? (ideas now)" thread is required

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 30 September 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

jake williams is a singer/songwriter originally from nicktown
jake williams is the producer who's behind acts like jx and mekka
jake williams is a traitor with his daughter
jake williams is up next with the vivacious brunette

Michael F Googlism (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 30 September 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it possible that Rex the Dog is not Moby, but that Jake Williams is?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 30 September 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

BTW, that new 12" is the new Rocker. Possibly.

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 30 September 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

You all know Jake Williams!

Little Lord Travolta (nordicskilla), Thursday, 30 September 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

You Belong to Me
Close To Your Heart
Son Of A Gun
There's Nothing I Won't Do

so many great JX tracks, but not a one sounds anything like Rex The Dog.
guess everyone can change paths somewhere along the way

rentboy (rentboy), Thursday, 30 September 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Rex the Dog did a JX remix.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 30 September 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

the new single is fucking amazing. Job otm, except it's better than Rocker, which I still only think is "good".

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 30 September 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i just don't get the rex the dog stuff at all. to me it sounds like bad old hooj toons / felix stuff which off course in light of it being jx now makes perfect sense.

stirmonster, Thursday, 30 September 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

and thus the backlash began...

rentboy (rentboy), Thursday, 30 September 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Rex The Dog? Rex the HOGWASH more like.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 30 September 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

the backlash began for me when kompakt signed him.

stirmonster, Thursday, 30 September 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Am I willing to admit defeat yet? Not quite. Was I wrong? Probably.

(Don't mind me. I'm working on my Robert Evans [for Halloween].)

So, how good is that Triola record?

Very good.

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 30 September 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

my source narrowed it down to an early 90's brit.

bbeettaa, Thursday, 30 September 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes "Frequencies" is thoroughly massive. The most *rave* thing he's done so far. That and (ironically given the "new "Rocker" tag) the Alter Ego mix of 2Raumwohnung are both rocking my world right now. Dance music is so LARGE at the moment!

I've noticed that the Hearts remix works exceptionally well as a cd opener.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 30 September 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i just don't get the rex the dog stuff at all. to me it sounds like bad old hooj toons / felix stuff which off course in light of it being jx now makes perfect sense.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, now you're saying. Just a few days ago I was convinced it was Moby, at least I can admit defeat. Rex stuff sounds more like italo to me anyway. Weren't those JX hits a little in the vein of italo house of the time, mmm?

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 30 September 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

well, i'm not much of an italo fan either.

stirmonster, Thursday, 30 September 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i like i high, by hyper go go.

who is that?

the great doxology of heckmondwike town (gareth), Thursday, 30 September 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

JX is one of my teen-era heroes, but what if it's Amos?

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 1 October 2004 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Rex the Dog remix of "There's Nothing I Won't Do" stat!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 1 October 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually that would be really marvelous. And it could repeat that trick that Freeform Five use in their remix of Mylo's "Muscle Cars" - brief snippets of early house/hardcore classix! Actually what *is* that sample in the "Muscle Cars" remix? My mind is blanking.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 1 October 2004 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The Rex the Dog dub of Depeche Mode's "Photographic" sounds great on first listen.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 1 October 2004 05:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I have the new single on repeat, it's kind of face melting. I can only imagine what it will sound like in clubs.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:05 (twenty-one years ago)

It's massive. He's probably the most self-consciously anthemic producer working right now - hence the flashbacks to "Take Me With You".

The closest anyone else comes to what he's doing that I can think of is Freeform Five's "Strangest Things (Remix)", which is massive in a slightly different way (a more maximalist everything but the kitchen kinda way).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:18 (twenty-one years ago)

It's odd you mention Cosmos, it came up on my Ipod on Wednesday and I was really struck by it again. certainly the "Heartbeats" mix is very similar.

btw Tim there's a great DJ T mix from last year knocking around Slsk if you can find it. "Blue Monday" and even "Killer" feature!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:24 (twenty-one years ago)

If it ever turns up on limewire I'll nab it. Have I thanked you enough for introducing me to "Freemind"?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:27 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, could be JX!
-- teh pow! (stevem7...), September 28th, 2004 1:45 PM. (blueski) (later) (link)

what do i win?

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:46 (twenty-one years ago)

probably not, Tim, I prefer "Phantomas" myself though I have to say.

On reflection "Killer" is extremely close to the Get Physical style. Apparently Michael Mayer's been playing it too.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

rex the who?
