album is very solid, "secret" and "keep" are the highlights from the tracks that weren't singles but "stay with me" is still probably my favourite

“Secret,” oh my god

― josh winters (josh)

Yeah, this is the one!

kitchen person, Friday, 21 June 2019 13:34 (six years ago)

I love this album so much.

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Saturday, 22 June 2019 16:06 (six years ago)

I like this album, though I don't think so for the same reasons I liked her early string of singles. This one exists outside of early 90s sonic nostalgia where those past songs were time traveling. But I'll tell you what this album *does* remind me of, though... Sky Ferreira's album.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 23 June 2019 13:04 (six years ago)

Some food songs here, some skippable.
The songs that somewhat like Cocteau Twins are better imo

nostormo, Sunday, 23 June 2019 15:40 (six years ago)

This is a bit more restrained and subdued than I was expecting but it is easily tying with Charly Bliss for my own AOTY

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 18:05 (six years ago)

The SVIIB comparison feels particularly apt - this does a similar thing in that it looks forward but with obvious influences, whereas the EP felt more like a well-performed recreation of its inspirations

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 18:08 (six years ago)

Today's pitchfork review was pretty harsh-- it reads more like 5.0 than the 6.5 they gave it.

I do take issue with this line though:

For an artist so laser-focused on pop production, Pilbeam’s songwriting is unapologetically sophomoric.

because she's talking about the lyrics, which is not the first thing I think of when I think of "songwriting", plus I'm not sure how important lyrics are with dream pop.

enochroot, Thursday, 27 June 2019 12:23 (six years ago)

makes me wonder how one could be apologetically sophomoric

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 27 June 2019 12:28 (six years ago)

the classic 'hype the debut EP & early singles / pan the debut album' manoeuvre

the lyrics aren't anything special but they're not embarassingly bad or anything and i thought it was strange the review focused on them so much/ it also feels weird to complain that there's too much dream pop guitar... on a dream pop album. it's not like the album is lacking in variation either

anyway the "born slippy"-esque synths on "stay with me" are the best

ufo, Thursday, 27 June 2019 12:50 (six years ago)

how are you gonna trot out another sounds-like-an-ad diss when "very reminiscent of making out with a 23-year-old mattress boy named DYLAN" exists

Is the "Bernard Sumner" guitar pedal commercially available, or did she just nail the right settings?
Because that guitar that comes in at 1:44 on 'Obsessed' is a dead ringer.

enochroot, Thursday, 18 July 2019 19:36 (six years ago)

probably just the right settings, she said it was a deliberate attempt to sound like "Regret"

Saw her live last night. I think the album has a couple too many midtempo dreampop-by-numbers tracks that weren't especially exciting live, but her voice is great and the momdnt when the guitars crashed in at the end of "Stay with Me" was incredible. She also closed with "Sure," which is still probably my favorite thing she's done.

The album kinda washed over me when it came out (aside from "Stay With Me") but I pulled it out again in preparation for seeing her live last night (she was awesome btw) and now it sounds like a classic?

Tim F, Thursday, 24 October 2019 23:55 (six years ago)

yeah, one of my faves of the year for sure

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Thursday, 24 October 2019 23:58 (six years ago)

Yeah, I just listened to it last week and it sounded glorious. Surprised it didn't get much discussion on here when it finally came out.

kitchen person, Friday, 25 October 2019 01:58 (six years ago)

I'm still obsessed with "Secret" and "Stay With Me"

winters (josh), Friday, 25 October 2019 03:23 (six years ago)

I think it's one of those albums where everything sounds so pleasant and comforting and familiar that if you listen to it without really focusing on it directly it's easy to just take it for granted.

(seeing her live was also helpful in this regard: no surprises, but it forced me to pay more attention)

Tim F, Friday, 25 October 2019 03:31 (six years ago)

Didn't expect to get so earwormed by this or the SAS EP (and I still like Sugar And Spice more than anything on the album) this year but yeah it's practically perfect for what it is.

this album kind of frustrates me because there's loads I like about it but there must be elements of music I normally dislike in there as some of the tracks irritate me.

maybe it's the dreamy/ languid feel which gets a bit much, idk.

kinder, Sunday, 15 December 2019 09:03 (six years ago)

CRJ and New Order, are we sure she doesnt post here?

Stay With Me has the main hook lifted from something, it's exactly the same sound, something in the last few years I think, cannot for the life of me think what it is, but it's really familiar.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 1 January 2020 20:47 (six years ago)

nashwan, Wednesday, 1 January 2020 21:03 (six years ago)

it's not born slippy, born slippy sounds a bit like it, what I am thinking of is exactly the same sound

She was probably referring to this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JvP4URRlDE

It's Joe Agius's "solo" project, which consist of the same lineup as Hatchie except he's singing main vocals. So it's basically a Hatchie track.

I like it a lot. I realize that this stuff is probably super derivative but they do know how to write a song!

Looking forward to Hatchie's new stuff.

daavid, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 17:12 (five years ago)

I kind of like it but also kind of think it goes into that Sixpence None the Richer song at the end

kinder, Friday, 30 October 2020 23:56 (five years ago)

Even *more* Cocteau Twins-ish in the bass dept, I'm thinking.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Saturday, 31 October 2020 03:38 (five years ago)

I had to google who he even is (I guess I haven't ever heard of The Creases before?). This is v good, though.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 31 October 2020 04:36 (five years ago)

he's hatchie's main guitarist/keyboardist & boyfriend, but yes he's formerly of the creases who are honestly not really worth knowing about. i saw them live once as an opening act and they were very forgettable

ufo, Saturday, 31 October 2020 06:01 (five years ago)

I listened to the one album that's on Spotify. It was perfectly ok, but probably once was enough.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 31 October 2020 06:08 (five years ago)

I feel like these guys use the perfect shoegaze guitar / bass settings for me. Just the right mix of Cocteau Twins, Lush and Slowdive (with a bit of Sundays mixed in). And live they sound even better. I'm taking about Hatchie/Joe A.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 14 September 2021 16:19 (four years ago)

It feels a bit all over the place for me but it's got its moments.

I guess the melody/chorus could've been better, imo.

Yeah this is best part about it for sure. The piano sound in particular is a nice touch.

daavid, Tuesday, 14 September 2021 16:55 (four years ago)

The madchester drums don't hurt either.

enochroot, Tuesday, 14 September 2021 17:43 (four years ago)

Yes! I hadn't even payed attention to that. The first 35 seconds are very Happy Mondays. And then the guitar is full-on Shoegaze (a little on the noisier side this time).

daavid, Tuesday, 14 September 2021 20:15 (four years ago)

There also this recent cover of Taylor Swift's August:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0L_gKjFTVbY

Probably the Cocteau-est sounding thing she's done.

daavid, Tuesday, 14 September 2021 20:20 (four years ago)

new song is decent but not her best, great guitar sound though

glad to hear her cover "august", it really needed someone to give it a dream-pop cover

really regretting deleting fb a while back now because without it i had no idea she was regularly (& safely!) playing local shows all through the pandemic, would have been nice to see

ufo, Wednesday, 15 September 2021 10:24 (four years ago)

That piano is very Madchester, I love this. Also she seems a lot more at ease in this video than any of her previous ones.

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 15 September 2021 17:15 (four years ago)

Maybe we can get Wax to reunite for a Wax / Hatchie / Waxahatchee tour.
