Really, though, they're all just playing catch-up after Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie.

i know...i mean i definitely remember every 2-4 years going "lol what the hell is wrong with this woman" whenever she releases something but looking at her wiki entry and seeing them all in a row was a real mindblower.

'Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie', but 'Abnormally Attracted To Sin' by Tori Amos is worse than all the others.

Alanis album titles are the equivalent of Brad Paisley album covers.

i think seeing them all in a row confirms that she's gone from annoyingly crazy to amazingly crazy - like she's still coming out with this lunacy even though no one cares any more!!

I think the idea that these are furrowed-brow cack-handed attempts at impressing people who think they're deeper than you and not fun-time surrealist word-splatters designed to push a certain kind of button is, ironic or something.

'flavors of entanglement' is a dumb title. and 'under rug swept' is a silly, pointless inversion. that said, i don't really understand the point of this thread.

the only really reprehensibly poor title there is "doth i protest too much", i think. i mean, armed with the knowledge that they are alanis morrisette songs, one does think an additional two or three are likely ill-chosen.

I prefer not to second guess what's going on in the head of somebody I don't know and just enjoy awesomeness.

Oh yeah, I don't think it's intentional, just like 12 year-old girls' poetry isn't intentionally bad. I think it's just what happens and is a fact of nature (and Alanis is secretly a 12 year-old girl).

(Also kind of remind me of, say, Melt-Banana song titles where you're not sure if the oddity is a result of English not being Yasuko's first language or a deliberate stylistic choice and either way who cares magic happens)

Embarrassingly enough, I think Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie is a good title -- the one that makes me giggle is Flavors of Entanglement. Pretty much any metaphorical use of "flavor" beyond the usual one is going to make me laugh, and is also going to make something sound like a badly named, heavily scented bath product

"Flavors" plural is a whole other level of hilarious -- I think I am going to spend a while loading random Wikipedia articles and then putting "flavors of" in front of them

OMG, I so love this song. I have just moved rooms to the other side of town and the only thing I missed was my Alanis Morissette collection!! So glad to have caught up with this one!!

1. Uninvited totally disarmed me when it came out, especially since I hated the idea of remaking Wings of Desire. It is a very good song. But I have a predilection to dig anything with chromatic-Kashmir-strings.

2. I'm never convinced she's been in an actual psychotic relationship. She just likes the idea of them, the way Nick Cave likes the idea of Appalachia, but couldn't actually live there.

3. I can't figure out if her name is French or Scottish, which makes her the ultimate Canadian.

It seems strange to me that the lyrics on her first album were so comparatively straightforward, almost too much at times (the chorus for "You Learn" used to wear me down). It's odd to think that she kind of deliberately moved to a 15 yr old poetry style. Maybe her co-writers were more interventionist to begin with?

What was the song on the second album with her dancing in heaps of different styles and costumes in the video clip? I liked that. "Thank U" too.

Stephen Thomas Erlewine's reviews of these albums on AMG are classic "no, this one is the return to form... ignore what I said last time!" bizniz.
