it's amazing these things are still the same. Mac version is fine, isn't it? I was using it a few months ago. Now using the Linux version. Seems same to me on all platforms.

I don't get the hoarders either. Maybe there's some people with too much money sunk into storage and high power/internet bills or something. Start going on a powertrip instead of just limiting the app's bandwidth.

Is this true though? Is hunting down private torrent sites still a thing? Seems the focus has shifted to the big free ones sharing the huge Hollywood trash. Those and stream rippers, apparently, according to TorrentFreak (which I visited just now for the first time in absolute ages, prompted by this revive).

Regarding music specifically, streaming services make a lot more sense for most users than downloading MP3s. The heat has to be down to some degree. I pay for a service myself, and still buy physical releases, and Soulseek helps with things not easy to find any other way. I imagine this is a typical use case now? I'm glad it's surviving

I would think that is typical nowadays, yes (if only as it's my mode of music consumption, too). Slsk and some well-curated film trackers seem to still fly under the radar, fortunately.

Since waffles.ch (mainly stuck with it because of the community) died, this has been my thing. I came up in the Limewire / Kazaa / etc. period, so I was extremely skeptical when a friend was pushing it on me. Seemed archaic as hell.

His sell was "These are people who are serious about piracy and curation," and damn if that isn't the truth.

When Josh Fauver (formerly of Deerhunter) passed, a lot of the Army of Bad Luck (his record label) catalog went with him, and this is just about the only place you can find these things, legal or otherwise.

The biggest problem with Spotify, iTunes etc is the same as with Netflix, ie yes you can spend all your remaining days consuming what’s on it, but the vast majority of music worth hearing is not on it.

I am also still a soulseek user. like most, i buy a lot of music digitally and physically, though i've yet to fall into what i consider the trap of streaming services and will never, ever do so, so i have to supplement some of my *pretty exorbitant music spending* with DLs on ssk.

I often marvel that it's still around, too. Means I've been using it for longer than almost anything on the internet.

the thing about zappa-as-composer that bugs me is this idea that classical music starts with edgar varese and ends with frank zappa... i don't think zappa actually believed that (there's a live album of his with an excerpt from bartok's piano concert no. 3, which is what got me into bartok at the age of around 17), but it's easy to get that impression from him sometimes

worst file mislabelling experience i had was when i went to look for a copy of underworld (2003), a movie which i definitely legally own, for a movie night with friends only to find out that the file in question was actually some porn film. the thing that upset me most was that it was some boring vanilla bullshit. we wanted to see erotically lit latex vampire fetish action, not some white cis guy fucking some white cis girl in a well-lit room with boring camera angles. i'm fine with trolling, but i get pissy when the trolling in question is lazy, bad, and boring. i wanna try and listen to some bad bunny and on comes madonna asking me what the fuck i think i'm doing. that's high-class trolling.

homer simpson slop trolling is fine, i guess. it kinda reminds me when someone took gal agiese's lines from "magician lord" and dubbed over them with an ai imitation of lorenzo music doing a garfield voice. i get the concept (the voice actor for gal agiese in the original game sounds kinda like lorenzo music's garfield), but it wasn't a _good_ ai imitation of lorenzo music, which kind of spoils the effect.
