Yeah, this. I'm sure there's a few successful acts that thrived in previous decades that would struggle if they appeared now due to things like Twitter etc. but I guess that's a whole 'nother thread that I'm not willing to start.

I buy the latest Total compilation every year. They're mood music, and I can put them all into a giant playlist and shuffle them. I don't dance; I listen to them while writing, or driving.
same. Kompakt is really good music for working and I'd say maybe 75% of music listening I do is while working, so this kind of stuff still occupies a big place in my music consumption.
― silverfish, Tuesday, 21 May 2019 16:27 (five years ago) link
Yes but is it trve ambient?
― pomenitul, Tuesday, 21 May 2019 16:28 (five years ago) link
whenever I try to listen to ambient when working I just start falling asleep. I need something with a good tempo beat.
― silverfish, Tuesday, 21 May 2019 16:38 (five years ago) link
Exactly. I have a Spotify playlist of all the Kompakt "Speicher" singles/EPs that's a major writing/editing soundtrack for me.
― shared unit of analysis (unperson), Tuesday, 21 May 2019 16:42 (five years ago) link
the Pop Ambient compilations are still mostly good in an unmemorable way, whereas the last Total compilation was actively unlistenable

The amount of good songs Prince made after Purple Rain can be counted on 1 hand. Sign O the Times' production on the whole (some tracks avoid it) is a prime example of mid-late 80s bad synth, overly gated ugliness.

a lot of the production makes me think of, like, sunset strip hair metal... a good thing

my favorite underrated Kompakt dude? Jurgen Paape. i wouldn't say i normally like stuff that could be described as "muscular," but i love this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJm72_Mo1ps

She means a lot to my spouse but, yeah, I'm often mystified by what people seem to get out of most of her work, especially since the 80s. "Live to Tell" is cool, though.

Indeed. It is probably more controversial to think that "The Crush of Love" is a classic single, which I do.

I feel like there has been a drift over the last couple of decades where consensus has gone from "every note Bon Jovi ever recorded is completely worthless" to "some Bon Jovi tracks / LPs are actually good" and I cant help feeling that this is a symptom of a greater moral decline.

it isn't that their music is unbearable, it's just that if their whole discography were to be deleted, nothing of value would have been lost. i don't get why people would use their limited time on earth listening to them when there is other music available.

this whole exchange gives me life. I don't hate the Beatles nor do I hate Bon Jovi, but I'd rather hear Bon Jovi than the Beatles about 99% of the time. of course, i'd rather not hear either of them because they're both kind of trash, but at least Bon Jovi is real trash.
