AUTECHRE - WARP TAPES 89-93 tonight 11pm and Sunday 11pm (and other warp stuff all weekend)

The Pingularity (ledge), Friday, 21 June 2019 11:01 (six years ago)

Listening to this now. It's quite sick. These must be their demo tapes? The beat I'm listening to clearly has some synth sounds from Incunabula, but it's an entirely different song, with a lot more samples.

octobeard, Friday, 21 June 2019 22:47 (six years ago)

Cheers mate.

Not sure why that didn’t work. Try this?

If not, go to the Autechre store and the link is hidden down at the bottom https://autechre.bleepstores.com/

If you've dug around the watmm threads you might also have seen a "late '80s" tape that someone has dropped in there.

Invisible (Noel Emits), Monday, 24 June 2019 14:36 (six years ago)

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 29 July 2019 15:40 (six years ago)

hey those Warp 89-93 tapes are pretty good huh

frogbs, Monday, 29 July 2019 18:59 (six years ago)

sooo good. might be blasphemous to say, but I prefer it to Incunabula. obviously both are attempting to do very different things tho

J. Sam, Monday, 29 July 2019 19:58 (six years ago)

yeah Incunabula always felt like a transitional record to me, except there's nothing before it besides that one single

frogbs, Monday, 29 July 2019 20:02 (six years ago)

Much of the tapes stuff comes across as an alternate, more bangin' Incunabula. Well, there are literally parts that ended up in tracks on the album all the way through. Easy to favour it right now as it's so fresh.

Thank You (Fattekin Mice Elf Control Again) (Noel Emits), Monday, 29 July 2019 20:13 (six years ago)

Yeah it shows some self-confidence for them to go the direction they did with Incunabula, given that they clearly could have released something more crowd-pleasing.

but everybody calls me, (lukas), Monday, 29 July 2019 22:14 (six years ago)

In interviews they've said that for Incunabula they provided their archive of finished tracks to Warp, who picked an album from them. Amber was the first album they created as an album, albeit using some tracks drawn from the same pool.

Any free link to the late 80s tape still working?

plazzTT, Thursday, 19 September 2019 06:29 (six years ago)

dunno but it wasn't that good anyway

neilasimpson, Thursday, 19 September 2019 09:53 (six years ago)

I think plazzTT is referring to the other one posted on watmm (expired link upthread) which was basically a home made dj edits tape.

The Pingularity (ledge), Thursday, 19 September 2019 10:35 (six years ago)

idk I thought it was really nice, its like a great pre-Incunabula album to me

frogbs, Thursday, 19 September 2019 13:31 (six years ago)

You mean the Warp Tapes 89-93? Not the 'late 80s tape' of dj edits of other people's tracks?

The Pingularity (ledge), Thursday, 19 September 2019 13:42 (six years ago)

the 89-93 tape is what I was referring to, don't know about this other tape but it sounds cool

i am generally unmoved by non-electronic instrument cover versions of electronic music but of course i will try to hear it once.

Putting this here so i find it later:

i've played it a handful of times, never really stunned

probably it fits in more with the approach of lehman's group than being a particularly probing translation from one medium/style to another

j., Wednesday, 16 October 2019 23:15 (six years ago)

I just have a thing for jazz AE covers; when I hear 444 I really want it to have a sax solo

The Mixlr mix is a lot of fun!

frogbs, Monday, 23 March 2020 00:45 (six years ago)

I feel somewhere between excited and unprepared. I spent more time with Autechre than any other artist in 2018, after more abortive explorations years before. But I still haven't even heard several albums and EPs. I got through NTS Sessions five times, but if you played name-that-Ae with me I'd probably bomb. It's kind of like I took several Ae courses and narrowly passed with a C-, and mostly just because I did most of the full-credit-if-you-just-did-it assignments. So now here's word of a next-level course —no prerequisites—and I want to take it but am afraid of flunking. I kind of like this idea of trying hard and failing, though at times I'm not quite sure what's there that I'm trying to appreciate. (I would write my way through some of NTS Sessions but eventually ran out of anthropomorphisms.)

There no rules to the Ae

The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 23 March 2020 02:42 (six years ago)

Most of the time it all sits in one randomized play list on my computer and when a new one comes out I throw it in the pile.

I can't pay no doctor bill, but Whitey's on the McAloon (Noodle Vague), Monday, 23 March 2020 02:50 (six years ago)

how dare you, those albums are sequenced, we live in a society.
Jesse I would recommend Confield, EP7, Untilted and Exai as essential reference listening. If you want to go earlier, probably Amber, Garbage, Envane, Cichlisuite and the Peel Sessions are my recommendations. And LP5 but that's probably their most sterile sounding work (excepting the beauty of Rae).

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Monday, 23 March 2020 04:25 (six years ago)

just listen to all of their albums chronologically

once the music of one album sounds natural, even inevitable, move on to the next

shouldn't take more than five or ten years

lukas, Monday, 23 March 2020 04:33 (six years ago)

Here's a playlist of Autechre in chronological order - warning, this is my "best of" playlist, so it likely is missing some of your favorites, but is much more complete now with the recent additions of elseq 2-5.
