Are there any must buys in the Stroom catalogue? I've looked at their Bandcamp page but was unsure where to start.

Well, Pablo's Eye is great!
― Evan, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 13:57 (seven years ago)
Thanks for the Commend link, Evan. This stuff is a big area of interest for me too and it's not easy to stay on top of new releases.
― doug watson, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 14:14 (seven years ago)
The Ingus Bauskenieks album is very good.
― paolo, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 15:13 (seven years ago)
You're welcome! I recommend following them on instagram as they're generally pretty on top of it and are descriptive about what they're showcasing/what's new.
xp
― Evan, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 15:17 (seven years ago)
i got the zoe sinatra/kyoto 12" and the strobe light network one, of their recent releases, and the new benjamin lew one sounds good too from what i've heard; keysha - stop it! is a classic
i find out about most of this type of stuff from instagram and NTS
― dogs, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 15:20 (seven years ago)
Yup, seem to remember Charlie Bones playing some Stroom stuff before. Thanks for the recommendations.
― millmeister, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 15:45 (seven years ago)
the guy who runs stroom (ziggy aka nosedrip) is a semi regular guest on bones' show, and he also has his own slot too:https://www.nts.live/shows/nosedrip

The latest Suso Saiz LP on MfM is absolutely beautiful as well
― Evan, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 16:00 (seven years ago)
oh well reminded - i need to hear that!

Wow, Pablo's Eye 'Spring Break' record is dope.
― MikoMcha, Sunday, 5 May 2019 05:28 (seven years ago)
It sure is!
― Evan, Sunday, 5 May 2019 18:24 (seven years ago)
in a similar orbit - a compilation reissued on Strangelove compiling their work, a mix of Venezuelan folk, jazz-funk and early synth-pop, ie a South American take on Sade at their most balearic. It's really good:

― boxedjoy, Friday, 7 June 2019 07:35 (seven years ago)
Awesome! Been looking forward to more Venezuelan stuff getting on reissue label's radars after those two Soul Jazz comps.
― Daniel_Rf, Friday, 7 June 2019 10:43 (seven years ago)
i was uber happy the Frank Harris and Maria Marquez comp came out. I have been searching for more of their music since I fell in love with Canto Del Pilon when it was included on a Ralph Records comp in 1987. It only took 32 years!

yes, love room is gorgeous
― Br. Des Shadows (NickB), Friday, 7 June 2019 13:35 (seven years ago)
TRjj Music Compilation "12 Dances" on STROOM is fucking brilliant and quite singular. I suppose kind of Pablo's Eye + Tirza without the vocals but weirder.
― Funky Isolations (jed_), Sunday, 21 July 2019 22:28 (six years ago)
I agree!
― paolo, Monday, 22 July 2019 08:11 (six years ago)
While we're talking about Stroom I'd like to say that their Kyoto/Zoe Sinatra split 12" is just about perfect and probably my single of the year so far, even if both of the tracks are from the 80s.
― paolo, Monday, 22 July 2019 08:13 (six years ago)
Super happy to be able to finally announce this one, it’s one we’ve been trying to make happen since we started the label! MFM042 ‘Broken Belief’ is a collection of ten tracks from Japanese musician Toshifumi Hinata recorded between 1985/1987..https://t.co/bjtP2U2bWm— Music From Memory (@MusicFromMemory) July 31, 2019
― groovypanda, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 13:06 (six years ago)
Website and bandcamp not even updated w/ it, it seems, but this is great news!
― Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 13:38 (six years ago)
that is great news. he is long overdue some love and more accessibility.

I really love this song

amazing that a song like that was left off the debut album despite being recorded for it.
― ban golf (jed_), Thursday, 12 September 2019 17:23 (six years ago)
on to the original 1983 album by The System, to clarify.
― ban golf (jed_), Thursday, 12 September 2019 17:33 (six years ago)
Wait, is this the "You Are In My System" System? Talk about being ahead of the curve!
― henry s, Thursday, 12 September 2019 18:35 (six years ago)
No this is the English The System

someone unpack the lyrical content of 'almost grown' for me please
― the creator has a mazda van (NickB), Thursday, 12 September 2019 20:45 (six years ago)
It seems to be a father singing about a teenage daughter he can't communicate with and their relationship has broken down so much that she's leaving home and he feels regret. I admit that it's a strange subject matter for a song. I'd never really thought about it before you asked.
― ban golf (jed_), Friday, 13 September 2019 12:53 (six years ago)
that is a hell of a song (almost grown)
― brimstead, Saturday, 14 September 2019 05:21 (six years ago)
Is the second Outro Tempo comp as good as the first one?
― paolo, Saturday, 14 September 2019 09:06 (six years ago)
I think I prefer the second
― boxedjoy, Saturday, 14 September 2019 09:54 (six years ago)
I picked it up yesterday and I think you might be right
― paolo, Sunday, 15 September 2019 08:50 (six years ago)
Jed - there's a new TRJJ EP out on Stroom. Just so you know
― paolo, Sunday, 15 September 2019 08:51 (six years ago)
cheers, paolo. I've been buying things from their own page too, many of which are one euro or pay what you want.

can recommend the Wanda Holt releases.
― ban golf (jed_), Monday, 16 September 2019 00:34 (six years ago)
and the Subaru one which, iirc, is free if you want it free. bandcamp doesn't show me the price any more because I already have it. I never pay nothing for "pay what you want" releases, fwiw.
― ban golf (jed_), Monday, 16 September 2019 01:17 (six years ago)
and forgotten Scottish wonders Vazz, too.

Going back to MFM, Test Pressing have been repping this new Toshifumi Hinata comp. Haven't heard it myself but looks interesting:

the Shakti reissue has "Rainbows" which features Jade 4U (of "Injected With A Poison" fame) which I've been hoping would turn up for a few years since I heard it in a Dream Chimney mix

really into this bit of pop-reggae which has been reissued on Smiling C, similar axis to the outsider pop failures that Stroom and MfM are unearthing
― boxedjoy, Sunday, 29 September 2019 20:54 (six years ago)
Have been really enjoying this MfM mix: https://soundcloud.com/music-from-memory/mfm-mix-008-dk

Their recent EP from Benjamin Lew is a bit special
― paolo, Tuesday, 3 December 2019 11:22 (six years ago)
Contains three tracks from Benjamin Lew and Steven Brown's excellent Douzième Journée: Le Verbe, La Parure, L'Amour, from 1982. A bit weird that Brown is not credited on this 12" release.
