Does anyone else remember being bombarded LG with full page ads on the myspace login screen for like a month and then huge banner ads after that?

Some folks are making it sound like she had some kind of organic home grown success. You don't get that kind of promo without a lot of corporate PR dollars behind you. It seems like they have spent a lot of money to push her image and her single into Clear Channel radio. Not that it is shocking or unusual for this to happen with pop music, but in her case it seemed really evident in a way that you wouldn't see with a Britney.

yeah...for like 6 months last year i thought of LG as a really failed major label push, MTV played "Just Dance" constantly but I didn't hear anything about here anywhere or think it was getting played much on the radio...then before i know it the song goes #1 and she's suddenly inescapable.

i give a fuck about them haters, young shipple been gettin paper (some dude), Thursday, 11 June 2009 17:23 (seventeen years ago)

40+ Israeli transvestite essentially means you're referring to Dana International, right? I see it.

yeah + my Israeli aunt, but let's not get into that.

sorta dissapointed i wasn't the first one who thought tranny, guess i am normal after all.

i don't think she's ugly though, but the whole female singers have to be naked and sing about sex all the time gets on my nerves.

like dancing with some clothes on can't be.... er.. sexy. ;)

problems with this thread:
- the insane generalization that Lady Gaga gets a free pass from anyone.
- the use of the word hipster
- homophobia

My own problem with Lady Gaga (and I'm assuming it's more or less ILM's problem, but I could be wrong) is that her music/image seems to be a lot less interesting than that of artists in the same vein and who haven't even come close to achieving the same commercial success.

I don't think she's ugly. Some of her photos look amazing. A lot of them don't. But the ones that don't aren't so much cases of "bad photo day" and more "I really don't like the visual you're consicously aiming for there."

Tim F, Thursday, 11 June 2009 23:11 (seventeen years ago)

yupyup, she is hella pretty and sometimes even dressed really interestingly. i haven't gone back and checked, but i feel like here was some love for lg on the rolling pop thread. why is barely anyone sticking up for her here? the tunes are really mostly not bad, and i like a few alot.

samosa gibreel, Thursday, 11 June 2009 23:15 (seventeen years ago)

I just checked out the video for You Belong by Hercules and Love Affair and it is a shame that they did not have the kind of commercial success that Lady Gaga is having. Obviously they are being marketed differently and are aiming at different audiences but Hercules embodies much of the same content as is just some much more interesting and well executed.

I'd like to see something as blatantly commercial as LG but with deeper references. It would be cool to see those codes cross over into the mainstream.

well I was the main GaGa defender/lover in that thread and I don't feel like getting into this argument now

Monday Nite Tranny Party (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 11 June 2009 23:49 (seventeen years ago)

and Hercules and Love Affair's music has like no pop appeal like at all, I don't even get why you'd bring them up in here?

Monday Nite Tranny Party (The Brainwasher), Thursday, 11 June 2009 23:49 (seventeen years ago)

they do full actual songs you can dance to and have a strong image. that qualifies as pop to me.

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Thursday, 11 June 2009 23:51 (seventeen years ago)

i mean they're obv intentionally straddling that middle ground between pop/charts and club credibility, of which there's been a great lineage imo (not so much in the US).

dont see how these artists are similar at all

& im not really a h&la stan or anything either ... shes a lot closer to ed banger MAYBE bcuz of the kinda trash aesthetic going on, but H&LA are trying so much harder to be tasteful ...

autogucci cru (deej), Friday, 12 June 2009 04:11 (seventeen years ago)

She's closer to (current) Kylie Minogue than either I think. I could totally imagine GaGa coming out with "Speakerphone" or "Red Blooded Woman".

Kylie's visual aesthetic is very similar actually, minus the elaborate artworld justifications.

im just glad there's a makeitpop in this world to take the pressure off posters like me...Godspeed brother

she has street cred to put it one way, as opposed to brit or xtina

How can she? No performer who has reached the mainstream can have street cred. When you get to the mainstream, that's when you lose all
credibility.

i don't even know what to make of this thread. but i'll offer up this:

i work with a hipster girl. she's like a cartoon character of what you'd think a hipster would be like & today she was talking about a guy she's into when she uttered the following sentence, "He doesn't listen to radio stuff like Britney & Lady Gaga, so that's a plus."
