that's the one. My mums 2 faves are Shirley Bassey and Barbra Streisand but she has some 80s Diana Ross albums and a greatest hits CD. None of that Supremes nonsense :D

Another classic from 1980. Shamefully out of print!

My #1 and #2 aren't here (Undertones' Hypnotised and Numan's Telekon), which means my vote will go to... Prince! Or maybe The B-52's.

I love a bunch of stuff here but I'm going for the Units because I was surprised and delighted to see it on the list
(but also feeling kinda bad for not voting "Jane From Occupied Europe" or Bass Culture)

eyeroll at y'all talking shit about diana ross's 1980 record, it's a chic organization joint and it's fucking great
― Jaki Liebowitz (rushomancy), Friday, 12 April 2019 23:43 (seven years ago)
Some places list Slapp Happy's Acnalbasac Noom as a 1980 release. Bob Dylan's Saved would be another contender. I'd go with Doc at the Radar Station from this list. My favorite post-Trout-Mask Beefheart.
― o. nate, Saturday, 13 April 2019 00:21 (seven years ago)
Acnalbasac Moon was indeed released in 1980, but recorded in 1974, and I personally wouldn't consider it eligible. Probably one of my top ten records of all time though.
― Emperor Tonetta Ketchup (sleeve), Saturday, 13 April 2019 00:27 (seven years ago)
i can never decide whether i like casablanca moon or acnalbasac noom better
i don't think of it as a 1980 release but i also don't think of "the modern lovers" as a 1976 release
a couple more 1980 records i've discovered recently and want to recommend:
don slepian - the sea of blisscarambolage - s/t
― Jaki Liebowitz (rushomancy), Saturday, 13 April 2019 16:21 (seven years ago)
but i also don't think of "the modern lovers" as a 1976 release
why?

Same reason, I assume.

I listened to it there a couple of days ago and it still sounds great. The bonus tracks on the extended version of the album are fantastic too.
― . (Michael B), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 12:49 (seven years ago)
I'd vote Los Angeles if it was on here, can make a case that Crocodiles is underrated and highly influential.

I don't mind her voice and think they were a decent pop band in their prime, but 9.5 times out of 10 I'd rather listen to Blondie.

Remain In Light is top 20 all-time for me. Maybe top 10.
― nicky lo-fi, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 13:53 (seven years ago)
This is Talking Heads vs Colossal Youth, and they’re both amazing albums.
My vote goes to Colossal Youth because it was a more influential record to me, even if in reality it had no precedent or spiritual followers. It feels like a record outside of time and place and it’s pretty much perfect in its own terms.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 14:04 (seven years ago)
Albums not in this list that would be in mine:
Aqsak Maboul - Un peu de l'âme des bandits Bauhaus - In the Flat Field The Cramps - Songs the Lord Taught Us Max Roach - M'BoomPylon - Gyrate
