(I land on the "very positively" side myself)

I suspect the more established the artist and bigger the recording budget, the more positively inclined an engineer might be.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 17:03 (seven years ago)

The more money you have the more you can obsess and unmix tracks by too much tweaking

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 17:19 (seven years ago)

The bass guitar sound on this probably links it more the my old 4AD favorites than it likely would otherwise, but I'm ok with being microtargeted.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 27 March 2019 17:28 (seven years ago)

Interesting, it reminds me of the bass tone on "Come As You Are".

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 17:37 (seven years ago)

I did not enjoy this :(

L'assie (Euler), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 17:50 (seven years ago)

I was wondering why everywhere said this sampled bittersweet symphony despite it... not

It doesn’t have anything to do with the Verve’s “Bitter Sweet Symphony.” It’s completely unrelated. I was JOKING!What a mess. Please take it out if written & out of your brains. I spent so much time recording/writing/arranging it & having people play it. It’s completely original.

she seems chill

affects breves telnet (Gummy Gummy), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 20:13 (seven years ago)

nothing is complete original, hasn't she read harold bloom?

affects breves telnet (Gummy Gummy), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 20:20 (seven years ago)

Great song. Love that she worked with Dean Hurley on this (whose Anthology Resource was quietly the best musical thing that came out of the Twin Peaks reboot).

Position Position, Wednesday, 27 March 2019 20:30 (seven years ago)

Additionally, Sky is even more particular about her final mixes. She will only be satisfied after she’s evaluated her song in seven different listening contexts: a car stereo; a smartphone with “regular” headphones; a smartphone with Apple earbuds; a smartphone’s built-in speaker; on a laptop; through “really bad, bad computer speakers—like the ones that came with Dells back in the early 2000s”; and the lush splendor of the studio, which is a personal luxury because, as she notes, “most people aren’t gonna listen that way.”

lmao iconic

everybody does this now lol i thought it was weird how the article fixated on it

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 21:09 (seven years ago)

havent listened yet but i think sky brings up 'twin peaks' enough that the LDR comparison is warranted

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 21:09 (seven years ago)

She was literally on Twin Peaks and has performed in concert with David Lynch.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 21:13 (seven years ago)

she was great on twin peaks!

maura, Wednesday, 27 March 2019 22:55 (seven years ago)

second fave one-off roadhouse performance after charlyne yi

song is good :)

difficult listening hour, Wednesday, 27 March 2019 23:13 (seven years ago)

i like this song... i think it's a good look for her & the build up really pays off for me. from what i understand she has poppier stuff too

J0rdan S., Thursday, 28 March 2019 00:56 (seven years ago)

lmfao at the "bitter sweet symphony" thing. yeah i couldn't hear it at all

dyl, Thursday, 28 March 2019 03:27 (seven years ago)

Dramatic strings 🙄 people are so fucking stupid

flappy bird, Thursday, 28 March 2019 03:44 (seven years ago)

it reminds me of something specific (def not that) but i cant place it

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Thursday, 28 March 2019 03:45 (seven years ago)

Can't get over how awesome this song is, hasn't sunk in yet that this album a) is coming out, and b) Probably won't suck. Jordan's news is very good

flappy bird, Thursday, 28 March 2019 03:46 (seven years ago)

loved the very start but never like anything with half-time drums. bass guitar immediately made me think 4AD too. looking forward to listening many more times.

I wouldn't hold my breath on that tbh

Simon H., Thursday, 28 March 2019 13:52 (seven years ago)

it has to be on the way. even the most clueless at her label must understand that she's more about full-length projects and is unlikely to score a hit single. i doubt they'd let her release anything unless it was to set up an album release.

Both have a 4/4 time chord progression with strings? ...and that's where the similarities end. I can see where you can sort of make a connection if you are kind of tone deaf.

daavid, Thursday, 28 March 2019 16:55 (seven years ago)

yeah there's no musical similarity at all

but just... i just want this album to come out 😔

flappy bird, Thursday, 28 March 2019 17:22 (seven years ago)

i'm hearing cat power / tindersticks. which is alright.

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Thursday, 28 March 2019 17:24 (seven years ago)

reminds me a little bit of pulp coming back with (the song) "this is hardcore".

Position Position, Thursday, 28 March 2019 17:33 (seven years ago)

i described it to maura as the most depressed pulp song i've ever heard

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 28 March 2019 17:36 (seven years ago)

Sounds like lost This Mortal Coil session to me, except it's not a cover.

I don't think it even has anything to do with that, I suspect it was mentioned in a press release or interview and then interpreted as fact at some point, with or without ever hearing the song

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Thursday, 28 March 2019 19:01 (seven years ago)

the arrangement really makes the song. so strikingly beautiful.

dyl, Thursday, 28 March 2019 23:46 (seven years ago)

After several minutes of trying to figure out what this song reminded me of I realized it was this Kesha demo from when she was going to cut an album with The Flaming Lips:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsumSxiOVQo
(...which I certainly don’t mind.)

You can't see it but I had an epiphany (Champiness), Friday, 29 March 2019 00:39 (seven years ago)

This Is Hardcore is an absolute belter, I think Pulp released Help The Aged as the first single off that record rather than the title track.

probably could have gone in the charli thread but new sky ferreira songs are significantly rarer

not a new sky ferreira single, but a new single with sky ferreira on it, full synthwave is absolutely a great idea if she wants to go that route
