I missed the nominating, but for potential interest, I just generated a playlist of the most popular 1:00-1:59 songs on Spotify at the moment, filtered to one per artist:

https://open.spotify.com/user/glennpmcdonald/playlist/4OVcZjfY22BezeO2FyK9mK

glenn mcdonald, Thursday, 14 March 2019 15:30 (seven years ago)

Small funny postscript on that. When you make a Spotify playlist, Spotify suggests potentially similar songs in case that helps you add stuff. In the case of this playlist, 9 of the 10 suggestions are <1:00 tracks. The one and only longer song is: "Short and Funky" by Too $hort.

glenn mcdonald, Thursday, 14 March 2019 15:35 (seven years ago)

hahaha thats amazing

conversely, my spotify shortlist's recommendations start with an 18-minute song by a band who doesn't appear on my shortlist (but does appear on the longlist, hmmmm)

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boo'd Up" (Will M.), Thursday, 14 March 2019 19:39 (seven years ago)

Another instrumental. The whole cosmos in less than 60 seconds. A miraculous melody full of yearning and positive vibrations. Slightly macabre but if I had one minute to live and could choose the soundtrack, it would be The High Llamas - Cuckoo Casino

Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Thursday, 14 March 2019 20:31 (seven years ago)

Does anyone know what this is?

Stereolab - The Eclipse (0:59)

Gaseous Clay (Leee), Thursday, 14 March 2019 21:58 (seven years ago)

Still can't quite over 'Ready Or Not Here I Come' being this short.

nashwan, Thursday, 14 March 2019 22:41 (seven years ago)

please consider voting for these amazing tracks:

Young Marble Giants - Final Day - perfection

Sun City Girls - Cooking With Satan - just listen to this thing

Bikini Kill - New Radio - fury personified

Swell Maps - Read About Seymour - post punk falling down the stairs

Emperor Tonetta Ketchup (sleeve), Friday, 15 March 2019 02:49 (seven years ago)

The last person I'd ever deign to correct, but "Read About Seymour" is 1977--that's a bit early for post-punk.

clemenza, Friday, 15 March 2019 03:38 (seven years ago)

XP: This is the Stereolab track, from a 1995 split single.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Friday, 15 March 2019 04:11 (seven years ago)

wow just when I think I've heard every stray 'Lab track from their 90's output something like that turns up, I actually tried to look it up on Discogs earlier and failed.

Emperor Tonetta Ketchup (sleeve), Friday, 15 March 2019 04:20 (seven years ago)

fwiw I don't think the version of Frownland by Captain Beefheart on the Spotify playlist is the version intended (it's an instrumental from a bootleg, kinda surprised Spotify allows bootlegs tbh) - in the event that anyone listening to it might like it but doesn't know it already - the proper version isn't on Spotify but is on youtube: https://youtu.be/r9lpLm7jwQY

Colonel Poo, Friday, 15 March 2019 15:54 (seven years ago)

damn, who nominated tanzmusik, this song is sick

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boo'd Up" (Will M.), Friday, 15 March 2019 17:38 (seven years ago)

ok i voted! last 50 or so cuts were brutal.

also in the "un nominated top 5" i included 4 songs i was too stupid to nominate, and one i didn't nominate because i cannot find proof of its existence on the internet anymore, but i KNOW IT EXISTED. and i know it was under two minutes. so the track length is listed as (???). don't worry, nobody else will nominate it unless there's some early 2000's ottawa punx on here. (sund4r?)

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boo'd Up" (Will M.), Friday, 15 March 2019 20:48 (seven years ago)

8 ballots in so far! which is pretty good, i think, given the amount of time it takes to put one together for this poll. 2 weeks left!

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Saturday, 16 March 2019 16:21 (seven years ago)

I voted btw

ebro the letter (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 16 March 2019 16:22 (seven years ago)

don't forget to consider the sub-polls (best ever <2 minutes artist, top 5 songs not on the noms list, and top 5 songs under 30 seconds)

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Saturday, 16 March 2019 16:22 (seven years ago)

i saw it, thanks!

also, i will note that someone besides clemenza used the Clemenza Ballot option :)

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Saturday, 16 March 2019 16:24 (seven years ago)

which makes it one of the fastest growing ballot options on ilx

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Saturday, 16 March 2019 16:24 (seven years ago)

As of this morning's listening, I currently have a 40-track ballot with 40 distinct artists.* I still have about 1/4 of the Spotify playlist to (hopefully) get through, but I find it encouraging that I won't have much room to repeat artists. There are about 5 artists where making calls on one or even two songs is gonna be a challenge, though.

Speaking of clemenza, btw, I recommend checking out that Odin track he linked (here it is again, to save you some scrolling). Hearing it amidst a bunch of GbV tracks was kinda surreal: it really does sound like something that coulda come off of Alien Lanes some 20 years later.

*Technically, anyway. John Darnielle and Scott Miller appear twice under different band monikers.

Timothée Charalambides (cryptosicko), Saturday, 16 March 2019 17:10 (seven years ago)

Sent in my vote. Looking through the nominees, I was disappointed that there were only a few Young Marble Giants songs nominated. But it was quickly explained when I looked at the album - a ton of their songs barely miss the cutoff!

Vinnie, Sunday, 17 March 2019 00:44 (seven years ago)

one potentially poll-winning song just missed the cutoff as well (neil young's Needle and the Damage Done - 2:03)

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Sunday, 17 March 2019 00:53 (seven years ago)

I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Clemenza Option is adopted by a few states in the 2020 election.

clemenza, Sunday, 17 March 2019 02:36 (seven years ago)

Since she had success in the year poll, please note this intense short song
Rosalía - Que se muere que se muere

When starting the nominations, I thought this was a favorite to top the vote. Turned out I had to nominate it myself.
Jay Dee - Stop

You might now know this haunting ominous French song (if you like Christine Ribeiro for example). She talks of a kid asking difficult family questions which she shrugs off.
Colette Magny - Melocoton

If you like short melancholic folk that is more recent than dear Vashti, check Diane Cluck
Diane Cluck - Diamonds]

Nabozo, Sunday, 17 March 2019 13:56 (seven years ago)

Ok, so that's why there was an error. Apologies, I proceed.

No comment needed for this Brazilian lament.
Maria Bethania - Sol Negro[/url

One of my favorites (traditional, south african revolutionary hymn)
Safa Saphel Isizwe

If you don't know this explosive riot grrl song, well you might vote for it, it's a proper album closer
Team Dresch - Screwing yet courage

Two more
Unknown twee song I like
Spiritual vocal jazz I like

Nabozo, Sunday, 17 March 2019 13:57 (seven years ago)

I clearly don't know how to paste those links

Nabozo, Sunday, 17 March 2019 14:06 (seven years ago)

dang, i love that team dresch tune. saw 'em once @ Gilman but all i really remember from that night is sleater-kinney headlining and blowing my **cking mind

The immortal Hydra Viridisimma (outdoor_miner), Sunday, 17 March 2019 15:55 (seven years ago)

just voted and already have so many regrets

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 20 March 2019 02:58 (seven years ago)

i regret that i have but two minutes to give for my poll

Neus Anneus (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 20 March 2019 03:09 (seven years ago)

Voted! Did the side-polls as well but could only think of three songs for the non-nomination bit (how did we forget Very Ape by Nirvana?). Really looking forward to the rollout!

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 20 March 2019 11:11 (seven years ago)

I'm trying to listen to the playlist before voting but I'm only about 10% through. not many surprises yet other than I guess I should probably listen to some Buddy Holly because I know nothing about him and I quite liked his songs on this

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 20 March 2019 11:24 (seven years ago)

Some campaigning happening over on pitchfork for "Binz" by Solange:

Under 120 seconds, it’s a perfect little sunshower of a song.

enochroot, Wednesday, 20 March 2019 12:13 (seven years ago)

I know it's silly to want to verify the write-in process for a poll that has 2,019 nominations, but it's a crime that I forgot to nominate this (it's 1:59) on the Complete Hank Williams box)

Chris L, Wednesday, 20 March 2019 15:16 (seven years ago)

Bleepy noisy pretty: Aniello Maffetone - VCO2

Weird outsidery folky I dunno: Philemon Arthur and the Dung - Jag Vill Va I Fred (it's < 2:00 on Spotify)

Deep dramatic Bulgarian folk: bulgarian state television female vocal choir - svatba

Haunting dramatic Bulgarian folk: molih ta majk i moli

Chill and silky smooth Malian vibes: Amadou & Mariam - M' Bifé Balafon

Enchanting Kenyan folk: Chemutoi Ketienya - Chemirocha

LEOPLOD BLOOMPS (Leee), Wednesday, 20 March 2019 18:22 (seven years ago)

Minor notes for voters:

Ramones - Lover, Come Back to Me doesn't exist
Bad Boys Brains - F.V.K.
F.S.O.L. T.S.O.L. - Abolish Government/Silent Majority
Sean Price - One More Try
Heavy Vegetable - Heavy Vegetable Fired
Robert Fripp - Mary 2:06 too long <Not sure if Karl wants to remove this one

And good news.
Here's a playlist of the tracks left off spotify.
I was kind of picky with the first 95 songs and how I sequenced them. The next 300 or so songs will be more or less dumped in the playlist over the next 2 or 3 days.

plastered in paris (FlopsyDuck), Wednesday, 20 March 2019 18:57 (seven years ago)

Robert Fripp - Mary 2:06 too long <Not sure if Karl wants to remove this one

My apologies - my mp3 was faulty and has a skip. I just consulted my FLAC archive and it is definitely just over 2 mins.

lingereffect (Kent Burt), Wednesday, 20 March 2019 23:33 (seven years ago)

i will remove it from the list of nominations that's linked within the Google Forms ballot, and also make the other changes mentioned in FlopsyDuck's Minor notes above. but first i am going to eat some pizza and watch game of thrones

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 20 March 2019 23:37 (seven years ago)

okeydoke, updated nominations list:

https://pastebin.com/PuG4RdvE

i've updated the links to this list in the Google Form/ballot as well.

------------

if a very kind MOD sees this, it would be very kind and in character if you could once again update the three pastebin links in the OP so they point to https://pastebin.com/PuG4RdvE:

the first link is the "link to full list of nominations", near the very top.

the second is "the final list of nominees", just a few lines beneath that.

third link is in the middle: "3) **PLEASE** form your baby ballot by copying and pasting from this full list of nominations: XXXXXXXX";

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Thursday, 21 March 2019 02:07 (seven years ago)

thanks again Flopsy for your help, and for all the effort in putting together the playlist of songs not on Spotify, which i will definitely be making use of as i form my own ballot

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Thursday, 21 March 2019 02:08 (seven years ago)

btw, 15 ballots are in so far! the clemenza option is the most popular format so far (6 voters), with the full ranked vote close behind (5 voters)

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Thursday, 21 March 2019 02:09 (seven years ago)

Think I've got all those pastebin changes for you.

mod, Thursday, 21 March 2019 02:43 (seven years ago)

Thank you!!

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Thursday, 21 March 2019 02:49 (seven years ago)

oh and if yr looking for that andrew jackson jihad song on spotify, they're called ajj now -- and it's a decent little tune! (someone already said this probably)

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boo'd Up" (Will M.), Thursday, 21 March 2019 14:13 (seven years ago)

i think i would have voted for this little jewel by hüsker dü from the manic strumming thread if it had been nominated..

Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Thursday, 21 March 2019 18:38 (seven years ago)

Kudos to person with the brains to nominate "You're Not Blank" by the Dils. What a song.

timellison, Friday, 22 March 2019 02:41 (seven years ago)

that will be on my ballot (I didn't nominate it but would have if it weren't already nominated)

Colonel Poo, Friday, 22 March 2019 11:37 (seven years ago)

Trompe Le Monde has just been removed from Spotify ffs, the title-track was one of my best discoveries in this

PPL+AI=NS (imago), Sunday, 24 March 2019 11:44 (seven years ago)

Jacques Lasry's Toccata seems to have gone missing from the playlist tho I'm sure it was there before. If anything we need more cristal baschet in the list :(

nashwan, Sunday, 24 March 2019 12:28 (seven years ago)

Ah fuck I forgot to vote for Tame

Neus Anneus (voodoo chili), Sunday, 24 March 2019 14:26 (seven years ago)

only 17 ballots in so far, so ... god please don't make me actively promote this
