Eno, but doubtless most people who say that here will go for the wrong one

Oh yeah, and A tábua de esmeralda cause it's brilliant and Errare Humanum Est is a top 10 songs of all-time.
― Nabozo, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 19:05 (seven years ago)
I went with my gut feeling on the King Crimson twofer, no regrets
great list, and yeah Slapp Happy would be my personal #1 from this year
― sold out in presale (sleeve), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 19:05 (seven years ago)
i do like slapp happy. Sometimes I just forget things. I'm not one for remembering release dates
― Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 19:08 (seven years ago)
What a bloody ridiculous list. And without the aforementioned reggae records, New Skin for the Old Ceremony, Joe Henderson's The Elements and Clifford Jordan's Glass Bead Games. Dang.
― Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 19:09 (seven years ago)
the elements was one i took out as i thought nobody would vote for it
― Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 19:11 (seven years ago)
And I know little about reggae and dub so i need schooling
1974 I was really all about Sparks, both of their '74 albums are on my alltime list. Nice to see Hatfield and the North mentioned above, I may have played their s/t more than any of the albums on the poll.

dadawah's "love and peace" is absolutely utterly essential reggae
― the scientology of mountains (rushomancy), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 19:22 (seven years ago)
Nyabinghi space rock. Definitely essential listening.

"Peace & Love" but otherwise otm
― rob, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 19:49 (seven years ago)
eno won't win because of split voting. i think it is either neil or joni who will finish first. maybe robert has a chance too.
― Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 20:38 (seven years ago)
There's my favourite Bowie, maybe my favourite Neil Young, totally amazing mindblowing stuff by Eno, Genesis, King Crimson, Roxy Music (and a wonderful Richard & Linda Thompson album as well). But even if I am a massive fan of all of those and especially Bowie and Diamond Dogs IS my fave Bowie...It's Gene Clark - No Other for me.
― Valentijn, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 20:50 (seven years ago)
missed the Richard & Linda Thompson, that might have beaten Neil Young, but I'm happy with my choice.
other great reggae albums from '74:
King Tubby - Dub From the RootsKeith Hudson & Family Man - Pick a DubAugustus Pablo - This Is Augustus Pablo Burning Spear - Rocking TimeKeith Hudson - Entering the Dragon
― Neil S, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 20:57 (seven years ago)
Get Up With It tho.
― *there's (Noel Emits), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 21:08 (seven years ago)
Kimono my House is the big omission here. And Relayer :)
two great Magma albums this year too - Kohntarkosz and Wurdah Itah, though I don't know if the latter was known by that name back then
― frogbs, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 21:11 (seven years ago)
i know the dadawah actually

Top Ten would of course incl. Big Star, Miles, Funkadelic, and several Not Listed (wasn't Van Morrison's It's Too Late To Stop Nowa '74 release?)
― dow, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 23:32 (seven years ago)
Voting Joni. I don't like all the songs on it but the highs are very high

It hurts to bypass Zuckerzeit and On The Beach, but this is Warm Jets for me.

Big Star over Autobahn. I listened to a lot of the 'most acclaimed albums of 1974' recently, and one that surprised me positively was Late For The Sky by Jackson Browne
― dorsalstop, Thursday, 28 February 2019 11:48 (seven years ago)
i assume their list is a bit different to mine?
― Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Thursday, 28 February 2019 14:13 (seven years ago)
Yes - acclaimed music.net I think, one of those list aggregators - two in their top 20 that are missing from yours are Kimono My House and Late For The Sky, that's why I mentioned it.

― petey v, Thursday, 28 February 2019 15:34 (seven years ago)
Late For The Sky first side is one of the most fantastic, depressing, intense, insular sides of any singer/songwriter record. its the real shit. falls apart a bit on side 2.... but damn i've listened to side 1 soooo many times.
― Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Thursday, 28 February 2019 15:40 (seven years ago)
the opener got used in taxi driver of course. amazing album opener.

But side 2 has "Before the Deluge!" Amazing album closer.
― pee-tape pay per view special (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 28 February 2019 17:09 (seven years ago)
there are few albums as singular, as beautiful, as mysterious as “rock bottom” — i don’t know anything that sounds quite like it.
it also achieves an emotional depth that, before hearing it, i didn’t realize was possible in “rock” music.
plus ivor cutler, i mean c’mon.
a very important album for me. so it’s robert wyatt this year.
― budo jeru, Thursday, 28 February 2019 17:17 (seven years ago)

On the Beach and Taking Tiger Mountain are extremely perfect rock Albums as well imo
― space rock gapdy = ADOSE (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 28 February 2019 17:29 (seven years ago)
There are quite a few POCs on this list. 1974 was a great year for soul and funk and reggae.

can never understand why that ragtag bunch of demos and neat ideas has so much more critical cachet than the ensuing full-bore rock masterpiece but I guess that's opinions eh!!!
― imago, Thursday, 28 February 2019 18:09 (seven years ago)
you can say what you want about HCTWJ but they aren't "ragtag demos"
Here Come the Warm Jets was recorded in twelve days at Majestic Studios in London during September 1973 by recording engineer Derek Chandler.
After recording the individual tracks, Eno condensed and mixed the instrumentation deeply, resulting in some of the tracks bearing little resemblance to what the musicians recorded during the session.
― sold out in presale (sleeve), Thursday, 28 February 2019 18:11 (seven years ago)
haha fine. it definitely sounds more 'try this, see what happens' than its successor, which feels very much of a piece and calculated to destroy me
― imago, Thursday, 28 February 2019 18:18 (seven years ago)
Calling HCTWJ demos is ludicrous.
― The Vangelis of Dating (Tom D.), Thursday, 28 February 2019 18:19 (seven years ago)
