BTW Karl Malone, the Joanna Wang song tt nominated IS on Spotify, albeit in Chinese. It's here if you want to add it to the playlist: https://open.spotify.com/track/2BCfrUVifsAAUmfWfu1f85?si=XrCzfXAIT82XyZF09pnPuw

IMPORTANT QUESTIONS AND INFORMATION BURIED DEEP IN THE NOMINATIONS THREAD WHERE EVERYONE WILL DEFINITELY SEE IT

so, just to set the table for the upcoming voting/campaign thread:

1) i will aim to have all the nominations formatted, spotify playlisted, and google doc-ified by this Friday.

2) about how long do you all think the voting period should be? is 3 weeks long enough? i know there are a ton of songs (possibly literally a ton, if each song weighs a pound) to sift through. but i don't want to make the voting period so incredibly long that all momentum gets lost. i want to run this poll like a well-oiled machine on a tight ship that also allows frequent smoke breaks and pays everyone a living wage. wherever that sweet spot is, that's how long i'd like the voting period to last.

3) i want to get the points system ironed out so i can lay down the law in the opening post of the voting thread. this much i'm sure on: (up to) 50 vote ballots. ranked ballots are fine, unranked are fine. mixed/tier ballots are ok as long as the total points add up correctly.

does anyone have a points system for 50 ballot polls, or should i just make one up? (e.g., first place = 100 points, second place = 90, third = 82, fourth = 76...forty-ninth = 3, fiftieth = 2, etc)

4) side-ballot ideas?

there's the exactly 2 minute songs idea, but A) that's messy because of issues with what counts as a 2:00 song, and also, how many 2:00 songs are there? like...10? is that a fun thing to vote on? i could be persuaded.

top 5 songs under 30 seconds? i'm just riffing here

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 17:56 (seven years ago)

top 5 songs under 30 seconds?

I like this idea!

sold out in presale (sleeve), Tuesday, 26 February 2019 17:58 (seven years ago)

Once you've settled on your basic ranked ballot, I'd be happy to do the math and come up with two or three alternatives for anyone who wants to do a tiered ballot.

clemenza, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 18:00 (seven years ago)

I've been away from this for a couple days. has there been a rule change so only a set number of songs per act are allowed? For example Wire, Minutemen etc. I hope not.

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 18:03 (seven years ago)

ah, that's a good question too - i meant to include that. A few people weighed in on that upthread. i think we settled on no limit on number of songs per act. personally i will think it is kind of lame to vote for 25 guided by voices songs, but if jay carney ilxors want to do that, they're free to do so. willing to hear arguments for or against it though, since the voting thread won't open for several more days.

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 18:13 (seven years ago)

you should be allowed to do it but be regarded as no good, just the worst, by your peers going forward

imago, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 18:14 (seven years ago)

imago OTM, you can make a ballot of one artist but then you will be ILX-communicated.

Gaseous Clay (Leee), Tuesday, 26 February 2019 18:15 (seven years ago)

I think I'm going to give myself a thoroughly reasonable two-songs-by-a-single-act limit on my ballot and encourage anyone who doesn't want to be in THE ILM DOGHOUSE to do similar

imago, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 18:16 (seven years ago)

otm

the coint and plick analogy here is people who continued to vote for marvel puzzle quest year after year

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 18:16 (seven years ago)

"but imagine having to choose JUST TWO Minutemen songs!"

it's a challenge, I know. but I also know you can do it. if you really try.

imago, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 18:17 (seven years ago)

i have to say, as a result of this poll my appreciation for guided by voices has increased quite a bit. the only GBV i ever owned was alien lanes, and i didn't really like it much as a teen. but now i really appreciate it - "as we go up, we go down" is kind of an amazing song, a top 10 for me for sure. i think part of it is that after listening to sooooo many short songs, the songs that are really tightly composed and "complete" just really stand out.

there are a few wire songs like that as well. "Another the Letter" is one. it has a full intro, a verse, an insane instrumental breakdown, a build-up to a finale - all in 1:08. it's fucking insane.

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 18:20 (seven years ago)

i should save my GBV praise for the campaign thread, but "I speak in monotone / Leave my fucking life alone" is a wonderful line

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 18:21 (seven years ago)

spoiler: Another The Letter will be my primary Wire choice, everyone vote for that one. here endeth my Wire campaigning

imago, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 18:22 (seven years ago)

My vote is for a three track limit, but there should definitely be a limit, if not enforced then at least seriously encouraged

like him hate us? Sure you are. Its in the cool aid. (ultros ultros-ghali), Tuesday, 26 February 2019 18:27 (seven years ago)

Why? We're all grown-ups here, no-one would vote for 50 GBV songs You're probably right.

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 26 February 2019 18:28 (seven years ago)

FYI I'm gonna vote for as many Misfits songs as necessary

sold out in presale (sleeve), Tuesday, 26 February 2019 18:29 (seven years ago)

please continue the debate on limiting single-artist votes, but meanwhile that gives me an idea for a side poll:

Best Ever <2 Minute song artist

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 18:30 (seven years ago)

I love that side poll idea, also the under 30 seconds one. We need to honor the smallest masterpieces, cause I think the results will probably be dominated by songs that are 1:59

we're far from the challops now (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 26 February 2019 18:33 (seven years ago)

cool, cool. i'm try to make clear in the voting thread that you can (and should!) vote for sub-30 second songs in the main poll as well. but we'll also do a side poll where only <30 seconds are eligible.

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 18:38 (seven years ago)

i think my strategy for culling my ballot will be to pick a bunch of songs i like, remove artist duplicates, and then pick the 50 shortest tracks

we're far from the challops now (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 26 February 2019 18:43 (seven years ago)

I don't think there should be a limit imposed. My hope, though, is that voters (of necessity--there are so many great songs to choose from) self-impose a limit of two or three at most for one artist.

clemenza, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 20:42 (seven years ago)

I'm more optimistic! I think we're going to get a health number in the 1:20-1:40 range.

Gaseous Clay (Leee), Tuesday, 26 February 2019 23:35 (seven years ago)

Cat Stevens - Was Dog A Doughnut? (1:17)

Foolishly I forgot the track is much longer than this and was going by an edit of it on a mix by M.A.N.D.Y. - disqualify!

nashwan, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 00:17 (seven years ago)

On placing limits on artists: I agree that a ballot that is almost all tracks by, say, the Minutemen or They Might Be Giants would be a) boring, and b) not really in the spirit of these multi-artist song polls, but I'm all for leaving that all up to the individual voter, rather than disciplining people into putting together ballots they wouldn't have otherwise. I had already decided on a personal rule of no more than three songs per artist (which I mostly did to curb the number of GbV tracks I'd include because, again, that'd be boring).

On the voting/campaigning period: 3 weeks works for me.

Timothée Charalambides (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 01:17 (seven years ago)

wait nobody nominated “tea for the tillerman” ?

noooooooooo

budo jeru, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 03:20 (seven years ago)

Man the nomination closing date should of been in the OP or thread title.

٩༼ º෴º ༽۶ (FlopsyDuck), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 03:33 (seven years ago)

sorry

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 04:23 (seven years ago)

Just checking to make sure we got...

White Stripes - Now Mary (1:47)

Jack White’s best ever song

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 05:00 (seven years ago)

Man the nomination closing date should of been in the OP or thread title

but it was in the first post:
Q: how long will this nominations thread last?
A: um, how about March 1, does that sound ok?

wouldn't it be a solution to still accept nominations till that date? it is only three more days.

Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 06:02 (seven years ago)

dang now mary is so so good. oh well

budo jeru, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 06:54 (seven years ago)

hey everyone, sorry, i have been acting in a confusing way. i've been working really long hours during my last week of my current job, and preparing to start a new job the following week, getting on new insurance, all that shit. it's been stressful.

er long story short, yes, nominations can extend through March 1st. please don't nominate 1500 more songs. if i get a moment today i'll ask a mod to update the title

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 14:15 (seven years ago)

gotcha

mod, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 14:19 (seven years ago)

*hugs mod*

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 14:19 (seven years ago)

Thank you. I was still debating which Heavy Vegetable and Thingy songs to choose

٩༼ º෴º ༽۶ (FlopsyDuck), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 14:20 (seven years ago)

One great thing about this poll is that I discovered Thingy put out a long lost album 2018.

٩༼ º෴º ༽۶ (FlopsyDuck), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 14:22 (seven years ago)

no problem, really, and it's dumb that i forgot i mentioned that in the OP. my bad. plus, as long as the new wave of nominations is less intense than the rate at which i can enter the existing ones, i will have time to catch up

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 14:22 (seven years ago)

also, the fact that everyone is enthusiastically nominating things is a good thing and i shouldn't complain

*texts my therapist to let her know how i'm improving self-talk*

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 14:23 (seven years ago)

I can push my nominations towards 20 then, woohoo

Rival Schools - High Acetate (1:53)

imago, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 14:52 (seven years ago)

I liked the ordered 1-10, 11-25, 26-50 system that was proposed. Maybe it could be the default option ?
Under-30 seconds top 5 sounds good, even if I really have no clue what to put there.

Nabozo, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 14:53 (seven years ago)

Yay! Thanks for extending it. Not voting for Now Mary would be plain wrong.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 14:58 (seven years ago)

I definitely like having bottom tier/s on ranked lists

٩༼ º෴º ༽۶ (FlopsyDuck), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 15:01 (seven years ago)

I liked the idea upthread of small numbers but just tiers after say 20:

1. 1
2. 0.95
3. 0.9
4. 0.85
5. 0.81
6. 0.77
7. 0.73
8. 0.69
9. 0.65
10. 0.62
11. 0.59
12. 0.56
13. 0.53
14. 0.5
15. 0.47
16. 0.45
17. 0.43
18. 0.41
19. 0.39
20. 0.37

21-30. 0.35

31-40. 0.25

41-50. 0.2

Hey hey, the tipple’s weak sherry (fionnland), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 15:03 (seven years ago)

I've been a little bit unprepared for listening to the Spotify playlist, as I've been doing it mostly passively; a lot of times I have a vague liking to a song and then it's already over and I have to listen to it again to make sure I actually liked it!

Gaseous Clay (Leee), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 20:24 (seven years ago)

Juanita Rogers - I'm So Glad You Love Me (1:40)

The Juanita Rogers also has a longer version, both versions are on Sun Ra's The Second Stop Is Jupiter LP. It looks like there might be a longer version of 'The New Teller' on some comp, the 1:39 version is a bonus on the Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers S/T album.

emil.y, Thursday, 28 February 2019 00:20 (seven years ago)

Wish I could have voted for Bongwater's "What If" (2:01).
