also charles from babaganouj was her lead guitarist and he was comically dramatic at that

Loving the new single. I think it's my favorite so far! That guitar in the verse is fierce! Also love the bass.

"Without a blush" = sunshine Curve! this is glorious
― technopolis, Monday, 4 March 2019 19:37 (seven years ago)
the first song in the op sounds like sixpence none the richer...but better.

Agreed. Looking to see that show in Asbury Park in order to make a fun little weekend out of it.
― Evan, Tuesday, 5 March 2019 16:08 (seven years ago)
Another solid track from her upcoming debut album! I'm getting some Liz Fraser vibes here.

her best song yet
― ufo, Tuesday, 2 April 2019 23:20 (seven years ago)
I'm getting some School Of Seven Bells vibes from the new single. Really wish the album wasn't still so far away.
― kitchen person, Thursday, 4 April 2019 03:42 (seven years ago)
This is the first one, besides the Adult Swim one, that I'm strictly "meh" about.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 4 April 2019 04:57 (seven years ago)
I felt the same way after the first couple of listens but now I really like it!
― daavid, Thursday, 4 April 2019 11:27 (seven years ago)
Just saw her live. Unreleased tracks from the new album are all sounding great. At this rate it will probably end up being album of the year for me.
― daavid, Saturday, 20 April 2019 03:19 (seven years ago)
this song was on the jukebox a minute ago and i couldn’t tell if it was hatchie or the ‘90s.
it was “ode to my family” by the cranberries. i have never heard this song as far as i can remember.
i also think about natalie imbruglia a lot when i listen to this band.

― daavid, Friday, 17 May 2019 17:28 (seven years ago)
I've had the album for a while now. It's so great.
It kind of sounds like what I imagine a fifth School Of Seven Bells album would have sounded like.
― kitchen person, Saturday, 15 June 2019 05:46 (six years ago)
I'm very jealous. I was hoping it would leak, but nothing so far.Ah well, it's only 6 days now...
― fragglerock, Saturday, 15 June 2019 20:20 (six years ago)
Remember when most albums used to leak 2 or 3 months early. Nowadays it seems to be 24 hours if that, which is probably a good thing.
― groovypanda, Monday, 17 June 2019 10:13 (six years ago)
But why thou? For us, the listeners, I'd take an early leak over the excitement any day.For the artist, people who are gonna buy the record, are gonna buy the record. (I know I will, it's on my Bandcamp wishlist already.) And everyone else is going to stream it anyway. And there is virtually no difference in what an artist earns on streams versus having their music pirated/leaked.
― fragglerock, Monday, 17 June 2019 12:59 (six years ago)
“Secret,” oh my god
― josh winters (josh), Friday, 21 June 2019 07:52 (six years ago)
album is very solid, "secret" and "keep" are the highlights from the tracks that weren't singles but "stay with me" is still probably my favourite
― ufo, Friday, 21 June 2019 09:23 (six years ago)
― josh winters (josh)
Yeah, this is the one!
― kitchen person, Friday, 21 June 2019 13:34 (six years ago)
I love this album so much.
― self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Saturday, 22 June 2019 16:06 (six years ago)
I like this album, though I don't think so for the same reasons I liked her early string of singles. This one exists outside of early 90s sonic nostalgia where those past songs were time traveling. But I'll tell you what this album *does* remind me of, though... Sky Ferreira's album.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 23 June 2019 13:04 (six years ago)
Some food songs here, some skippable. The songs that somewhat like Cocteau Twins are better imo
― nostormo, Sunday, 23 June 2019 15:40 (six years ago)
This is a bit more restrained and subdued than I was expecting but it is easily tying with Charly Bliss for my own AOTY
― boxedjoy, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 18:05 (six years ago)
The SVIIB comparison feels particularly apt - this does a similar thing in that it looks forward but with obvious influences, whereas the EP felt more like a well-performed recreation of its inspirations
― boxedjoy, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 18:08 (six years ago)
Today's pitchfork review was pretty harsh-- it reads more like 5.0 than the 6.5 they gave it.
I do take issue with this line though:
For an artist so laser-focused on pop production, Pilbeam’s songwriting is unapologetically sophomoric.
― enochroot, Thursday, 27 June 2019 12:23 (six years ago)
makes me wonder how one could be apologetically sophomoric
― american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 27 June 2019 12:28 (six years ago)
the classic 'hype the debut EP & early singles / pan the debut album' manoeuvre
the lyrics aren't anything special but they're not embarassingly bad or anything and i thought it was strange the review focused on them so much/ it also feels weird to complain that there's too much dream pop guitar... on a dream pop album. it's not like the album is lacking in variation either
anyway the "born slippy"-esque synths on "stay with me" are the best
― ufo, Thursday, 27 June 2019 12:50 (six years ago)
how are you gonna trot out another sounds-like-an-ad diss when "very reminiscent of making out with a 23-year-old mattress boy named DYLAN" exists

― mookieproof, Wednesday, 3 July 2019 23:30 (six years ago)
Is the "Bernard Sumner" guitar pedal commercially available, or did she just nail the right settings?Because that guitar that comes in at 1:44 on 'Obsessed' is a dead ringer.
― enochroot, Thursday, 18 July 2019 19:36 (six years ago)
probably just the right settings, she said it was a deliberate attempt to sound like "Regret"
― ufo, Friday, 19 July 2019 01:29 (six years ago)
Saw her live last night. I think the album has a couple too many midtempo dreampop-by-numbers tracks that weren't especially exciting live, but her voice is great and the momdnt when the guitars crashed in at the end of "Stay with Me" was incredible. She also closed with "Sure," which is still probably my favorite thing she's done.
― jaymc, Friday, 13 September 2019 13:26 (six years ago)
The album kinda washed over me when it came out (aside from "Stay With Me") but I pulled it out again in preparation for seeing her live last night (she was awesome btw) and now it sounds like a classic?
― Tim F, Thursday, 24 October 2019 23:55 (six years ago)
yeah, one of my faves of the year for sure
― self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Thursday, 24 October 2019 23:58 (six years ago)
Yeah, I just listened to it last week and it sounded glorious. Surprised it didn't get much discussion on here when it finally came out.
― kitchen person, Friday, 25 October 2019 01:58 (six years ago)
I'm still obsessed with "Secret" and "Stay With Me"
― winters (josh), Friday, 25 October 2019 03:23 (six years ago)
I think it's one of those albums where everything sounds so pleasant and comforting and familiar that if you listen to it without really focusing on it directly it's easy to just take it for granted.
(seeing her live was also helpful in this regard: no surprises, but it forced me to pay more attention)
― Tim F, Friday, 25 October 2019 03:31 (six years ago)
Didn't expect to get so earwormed by this or the SAS EP (and I still like Sugar And Spice more than anything on the album) this year but yeah it's practically perfect for what it is.

this album kind of frustrates me because there's loads I like about it but there must be elements of music I normally dislike in there as some of the tracks irritate me.maybe it's the dreamy/ languid feel which gets a bit much, idk.
― kinder, Sunday, 15 December 2019 09:03 (six years ago)
CRJ and New Order, are we sure she doesnt post here?
― boxedjoy, Sunday, 15 December 2019 16:12 (six years ago)
Stay With Me has the main hook lifted from something, it's exactly the same sound, something in the last few years I think, cannot for the life of me think what it is, but it's really familiar.

Hatchie was a lockdown algorithm discovery for me. I came fully onboard with The Rhythm, which I still think is one of her best. So I was really hoping that she was going to go further down that 'rave music with Rickenbackers' Curve / Chapterhouse route
New single sounds more jangle-pop, really digging into the heavy chorus effects. I will listen to that Sundays / Ivy / Ocean Blue jangle guitar sound forever TBH
― Etherwave, Wednesday, 3 September 2025 12:45 (nine months ago)
That's a great single, but like you Etherwave I was expecting her to go in that direction based on Nosebleed from the deluxe of the last album. This feels like a real return to the sound of her first EP. She's so good at it this sound.
― kitchen person, Wednesday, 3 September 2025 13:51 (nine months ago)

I don’t know but at this point in my life, I’m fine with being pandered to by guitarists with chorus pedals
― Etherwave, Wednesday, 3 September 2025 19:18 (nine months ago)
I've been relistenening to that first EP quite a lot this year. So fricking good

The Hatchie song Rage is playing this week is quite attractive ear-candy. This, apparently.
― Fed up with your constant and uniform motion (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Friday, 17 October 2025 23:25 (seven months ago)
Love the single. Sounds like she's going back to the sound of her first EP for this album and I'm cool with that.
― kitchen person, Saturday, 18 October 2025 01:05 (seven months ago)
Speaking of Rage, these were her guest-programmer selections last night:
https://www.abc.net.au/rage/guest/hatchie-guest-programs-rage/105971090
(Though it's endlessly frustrating that the programmer commentary itself is one of the few ABC things that's *not* re-playable on demand AFAIK. I could watch people taking about their favourite music 4eva, even if legal considerations mean the videos have to be excised longer term.)
Time to listen to the longplayer...

I am fascinated by this playlist. There are some really "uncool" choices that seem to actually make so much sense, and I've not even heard the new album yet
― boxedjoy, Sunday, 9 November 2025 16:55 (seven months ago)
Not a fan of the album, sadly. My least favorite of what she's put out so far. And an extra layer of disappointment is that my favorite track ended up being "Lose It Again", which I thought was just OK.
― daavid, Sunday, 9 November 2025 19:37 (seven months ago)
Those are some excellent and very surprising choices. Love that she picked the Bryan Adams & Mel C video. I still go back to that one a lot. Inspired Kylie choice and nice to see Case Of The Ex in there too.
I'm into the new album even though it's definitely not as instant as her first two. The opener really reminds me of Boards Of Canada, but I haven't figured which song too. Carousel is the clear highlight. Some big Four Calendar Cafe vibes there and on a few of the other songs.
― kitchen person, Sunday, 9 November 2025 22:02 (seven months ago)
Yeah, vaguely Cocteau Twins (absent from playlist shockah) vibes is likely what I'm semi-consciously seeking and it seemed to deliver lol. Quite a bit of it has cohered into actual pop songs with some promise of durability, so I was content enough after 1.5 listens.
Thanks boxedjoy for the Youtube link! Looks like it was posted as I was reviving the thread. (She got a pretty tight edit! Collected commentary sometimes exceeds half an hour of rambling.)
― Fed up with your constant and uniform motion (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Sunday, 9 November 2025 23:42 (seven months ago)
I like the first few Cocteau-heavy songs on the new album, especially "Carousel", but I start to zone out after that. Will listen a third time, but I don't think this one is as good as what she's done before, sadly
― Vinnie, Tuesday, 11 November 2025 15:18 (seven months ago)
