read that as Jay Z/Stereolab, which, uh, wow

That was my point.
Oh, I get you now. I had missed man alive's post about the cereal box tbh. I should probably not post hurriedly during work breaks on long days.

if the music you make isn't mostly autobiographic, it's trash. worthless.
Props on the controp, I'm a little tilted now. This is the wrongest opinion that has ever wronged.

how the fuck would you know if any art is "autobiographic" `
― a Stalin Stale Ale for me, please (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 22 February 2019 13:25 (seven years ago)
music with lyrics is for children
My 6 year old daughter whenever I put some music on at home: "Is someone going to start singing?"Me: "No"Daughter: "Then I don't want to hear it"

― fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Friday, 22 February 2019 14:31 (seven years ago)
anyway, my opinion on lyrics in music is that in 90% of cases music is better if you don't pay attention to the lyrics
― silverfish, Friday, 22 February 2019 14:36 (seven years ago)
Agree with silverfish. There aren't many good lyricists out there, and "autobiographical" lyrics are the hardest to do well.

Man I know I probably bang on about this too much but Stereolab's transition from "perfect simple dual-vocal Neu! tribute band with communism" into "terrifyingly twee and overly complicated The Free Design tribute band with jazz hands" is the biggest bummer I can think of. I cannot imagine getting listening to anything they recorded after Emperor Tomato Ketchup for pleasure. It is such a bummer! I have never heard a band go so pivot so suddenly from "perfect" to "zany"

― brimstead, Friday, 1 March 2019 01:35 (seven years ago)
they were more twee early on anyways
agree. I like both versions of the band, I just don't think they had the songwriting ability to do morricone / cool jazz as well as they did the neu indie rock stuff, which takes more of a conceptual commitment than songwriting chops
― macropuente (map), Friday, 1 March 2019 02:28 (seven years ago)
I honestly can’t determine if “they don’t have the range as songwriters” or if my own personal taste favours monolithic two-chord monuments to human synchronicity (which mirrors the sentiment of the lyrical content) which effectively mars my capacity to appreciate their subsequent pivot to kindergarten rock

I can pin-point the exact moment chronologically that I get off the Stereolab bus and that's "Monster Sacre" toward the end of Tomato Ketchup. (The title track right before it is of course one of my favourite Stereolab songs)

i listened to Dots and Loops once and knew it was over for me. I wanted buzzy punchy moog-heavy dance/pop

"Monster Sacre" is such a pretty and forlorn song though! Also interesting rework of an Erik Satie piece.

This is the thread for controversial music opinions. This is the thread for all this Stereolab talk: "Their early stuff was better"
― everything, Friday, 1 March 2019 21:42 (seven years ago)
Dots & Loops is best Stereolab LP, Margarine Eclipse is #2, there's your controversy?
ETK is ruined by Cybele's Reverie, a great single which does not fit on there at all.

here's a proposition: there's virtually no instrumental rock or pop music that wouldn't be improved by some sort of vocal

there's virtually no instrumental rock or pop music that wouldn't be improved by some sort of vocal― imagoEasily falsified by thousands of techno, trance and house club hits, subsequently rereleased with added vocals to score a chart hit.
