i think motion sickness might be a "great" song, not just a good one. i was a bit disappointed to learn it was about ryan adams--i didn't want the narrative to be so specific--but even with that, it doesn't lose any of its impact.

it's better than great. it's brilliant, a bona fide classic, an all-timer...

alpine static, Thursday, 21 February 2019 06:38 (seven years ago)

"Dylan Thomas" and "Service Road" I hope show up in next year's track list.

otm, just hit replay on "Dylan Thomas." I like this album.

I'm coming around on some songs. It still really annoys me when Conor's voice comes in on the first track. The lyric is one person's story, and it doesn't really make sense for this other voice to come in with octave unison. Phoebe's double tracked voice and the guitars would have been stronger for the song. I like Conor's voice as a lead, but it's not really capable of serving another role.

really

say it with sausages (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 21 February 2019 23:34 (seven years ago)

feel like I made a deal w/ satan to make my copy of Raising Sand much cooler, but he took all of the harmonies away as payment.

say it with sausages (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 21 February 2019 23:39 (seven years ago)

'Service Road' sure is good, though

say it with sausages (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 21 February 2019 23:43 (seven years ago)

no i agree there's too much oberst on this album

Mordy, Thursday, 21 February 2019 23:57 (seven years ago)

So is the title Stranger In The Alps a reference to The Big Lebowski?

it has to be, right?

One would assume so, yes

Yeah, she's confirmed this in interviews.

her ep of the Song Exploder podcast is pretty cool

"Dylan Thomas" is my favorite song today; Most likely for the rest of the week.

I checked out her solo LP after all the hubbub. It totally lives up to the hype. Fabulous atmosphere, impressive depth, looking forward to her next one. The Boygenius EP is great as well. The album with Conor Oberst, not so much.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 18 April 2019 01:21 (seven years ago)

I'm just not as enthused by the collaborative stuff as I am by her solo album. Have a side-projectiness to them that I find off putting.

Thybulle on the Dash (Spottie), Wednesday, 26 February 2020 18:19 (six years ago)

damn this is excellent. at the very least keeps up her streak of one very great song per album.

Thybulle on the Dash (Spottie), Wednesday, 26 February 2020 18:26 (six years ago)

hey, this is a good sign that the new album could be the one with multiple very great songs.

haha, great opening shot

from here: https://www.stereogum.com/2074637/phoebe-bridgers-garden-song/video

I was just thinking about my hometown, and I was thinking about reoccurring nightmares I have on tour. So on “Garden Song,” my tour manager sings with me. He’s 6-foot-7. He’s a Dutch man named Jeroen. I realized he had the voice of an angel when he was singing Mitski with me in the van and he was two octaves below me, and I was like, “You sound like a Dutch Matt Berninger from the National.”

ooga booga-ing for the bourgeoisie (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 26 February 2020 21:18 (six years ago)

oh cool, thanks!

yah i love every song on Stranger at this point.

Thybulle on the Dash (Spottie), Thursday, 27 February 2020 06:35 (six years ago)

This sounds better with each listen. I’m sleep deprived and on a train at the moment so that sound of looping backwards guitars (?) is blending with everything around me and it’s beautiful.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 27 February 2020 06:38 (six years ago)

Excellent new song, love the spooky double-tracked vocal vibe she's working with. No info on the sophomore lp?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 28 February 2020 01:07 (six years ago)

“I’m sleep deprived and on a train” almost sounds like a lyric she would write

digging this. the arrangement reminds me of a beulah song, or something in that vein.
