i'll note little things as they come up:
I change Jacquees to Rodriquez Jacquees Broadnax, since that what he went by for At the Club, the album that has 'New Wave' on it.

ok, just finished up the clemenza section (70 nominations!)
a couple things:
neil young - "there goes my babe" - is this the buffalo springfield demo? that one's 1:47. the version that's on neil's archives (the only one i could find under his name) is 2:23
everly brothers - "problems" is a touch over 2 minutes on spotify but the song clearly cuts off several seconds before, so i think it's fine.
jerry lee lewis - "lewis boogie" is the nightmare song. there are about a dozen versions on spotify, and every single one is 2 minutes or more. but the song does cut off a few seconds before. allmusic puts it at 2:02. *throws hands in air, but cares*
kleenex/liliput - "Split" is 2:01, but cuts off a few seconds before.
the luv'd ones - "stand tall" is 2:09 on spotify, and doesn't fade out until 2:05. i am tossing it out. BANNED.
----
i'm tempted to toss both the jerry lee lewis and liliput songs as well. they're both under 2, if you listen to the song, but if that's the case we're gonna have a shitload of songs that are up to 2:02 or 2:03 but count because they actually cut off a few seconds before that. however, it's late here and i'm very tired, so i'm going to go to sleep and think about something else until i wake up again.

I would have nominated "Lexicon Devil"--2:05 on my player. That is the (superior, IMO) single version; it’s the album version that runs 1:44. (I thought about nominating this song; but it felt like a “cheat” to name the lesser version, solely b/c it fits.)

it’s much more interesting for me when the brevity is an integral part of the songwriting, or on the other hand when the song feels like a sketch, an idea for a song that is just kinda hanging in mid-air and it’s mysterious or weird (e.g. “can you take me back where i came from ...”) — yknow, rather than a conventional song that just happens to be short.Conversely, I thought it was interesting to discover how many songs that I love, and which feel “fully formed,” do indeed happen to be this short. It makes them seem all the more remarkable, in a way. (I couldn’t believe it when I saw “Zurich Is Stained” is only 1:41!)

KM -- no chicanery at work; all those songs were under 2:00 on two of my three media players. Anything I keep is always the standard version--honestly, if you have different timings on Spotify, those are the versions I'd be suspicious of. (The Neil Young is a different case; think it's the Archives version I have.)
― clemenza, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 12:26 (five years ago) link
My "Lewis Boogie" is the standard one from his Sun best-of, the same version you'll find here: 1:58.

I have to go Bo Jackson/Bob Dole on you here: Spotify, from my limited experience, is like a free-for-all as to what's on there, but do not doubt Clemenza on these matters.

"You Suffer" was inspired by Wehrmacht's "E!" which is a split second long
― ⅋ (crüt), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 14:50 (five years ago) link
I had an idea for this poll.
How about instead of ranking 77-1 or w/e we could have the highest-scoring track 0:01 long, 0:02 long, etc.?
Is this a terrible idea or a brilliant one? The Wehrmacht track above would be my vote for 0:01, that is class.

Quentin Crisp's "Stop The Music For A Minute" is a solid choice for any compilation, but putting it anywhere apart from right at the end is just terrible sequencing

i like that idea but it might cause some confusion for people viewing the results (for example, the 11th place track would say 0:11 long, but it would actually be 1:42, or whatever)
but also, leee already suggested a fun idea for the roll-out of the results...don't know how to describe it without blowing it, but it'll be fun!

(Speaking from years and years of putting it on compilation tapes for people)
Also, I was really looking forward to this but am feeling quite overwhelmed by the prospect now, there are so many songs. I know they're short but I also feel like a lot of people have just dumped every short song they can think of onto the list, so it's not just the best cool short things but every track by every band who regularly write short songs.

as the wielder of ultimate power i reject this idea
it will be ok! it's a lot of songs! it's ok to just skim through them and pick the ones you know. you're not legally obligated to listen to every nominated song and formulate the all-time perfect list. you ARE legally obligated to listen to some good music and pick your faves, potentially in an ordered list, and to have fun doing it
