There is such an innate difference in power between famous people and civilians that I'm sure (most) of Adams' story is far from unique. I remember hearing an interview with Billy Joel, and he flat-out said some people are good looking, some people are funny, but he's rich and famous and that is what gets him beautiful women, or something like that. That's why groupies exist, the pull of that power. Now, the counterargument (from my wife) is that people attracted to famous people for the sake of it are different from people attracted to famous people with hopes for their own potential careers, and that's true, but the fact remains that it's still the person's fame that is usually pulling people in in the first place, and the dynamic is still unhealthy. Might be why so many famous people end up partnering with other famous people?

The underage stuff with Adams is the most damning of all these accusations.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 14 February 2019 19:07 (seven years ago)

the stuff with minors is bad but it's difficult for me to say it's quantifiably worse than manipulating/exploiting an adult

calumy (rip van wanko), Thursday, 14 February 2019 19:12 (seven years ago)

Well, to start with, one's illegal.

Oh Jesus don't Google that

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 14 February 2019 19:20 (seven years ago)

Exploiting a minor is a cut and dry crime, deserving punishment.

Making your romantic partner feel bad about themselves and their abilities is evil, insidious behavior, but it’s harder for outsiders—or the state—to weigh in there, even if adams in the end did more harm in this instance

Trϵϵship, Thursday, 14 February 2019 19:21 (seven years ago)

As a society i think we need to stand firm against hurting kids and not let this crime get lumped in with all ither kinds of bad behavior

i've already seen the "the kid stuff is the worst part of these allegations" wrt to this case many times, and i find it specious, virtue signally, inconsiderate of other victims

Ironically, I find your argument specious, because you mention "virtue signaling," which is not a thing - "oh, you don't really believe children shouldn't be sexually exploited - you're just showing off for the rest of the Internet!"

grawlix (unperson), Thursday, 14 February 2019 19:32 (seven years ago)

xp fair enough rip. i don’t want to downplay the other charges at all

Trϵϵship, Thursday, 14 February 2019 19:32 (seven years ago)

^^ No, it's not "fair enough." To say one thing is worse than another, when it definitively is, is not to "downplay" the second thing. I know naïveté is your whole thing here, but just this one time, don't back away. You're not wrong.

grawlix (unperson), Thursday, 14 February 2019 19:34 (seven years ago)

xp really it's the notion that anything crepey automatically trumps anything else that i take issue with but moving on!

To say one thing is worse than another, when it definitively is,

**puts on rubber gloves and breathing suit**

I'm not sure that sending lewd messages to teens is necessarily worse than psychologically abusing women and effectively ruining their careers

**runs away**

Every man has the same come on
I'll make you a star
I'll take you a million miles from all this
Put you on a pedestal
Come on, come on
Have you ever heard those opening lines
You should leave this small town way behind
I'll be your partner
Show you the steps
With me behind your tasting of the sweet wine of success
Because I'll take you to the top, baby
Hey baby
I'll take you to the top
Step on the ladder
Toe in the pool
You're such a natural you don't need no acting school
Don't need no casting couch
Or be a star in bed
Never, never, never let success go to your pretty head
Cause I'll take you to the top, baby
I swear we'll never going to stop, baby
I'll take you to the top
Don't let the world pass you by
You better take your chance now baby
Or be sorry for the rest of your sweet loving life, baby
Oh, sugar
Hey sugar, I'll take you to the top
I'll take you to the top
I'll take you to the top, sugar

Great debate everyone. But let's not forget that in addition to all the bad things in that article, he also demeaned Mandy Moore for not playing an instrument.

Which means he is also rockist.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 14 February 2019 20:50 (seven years ago)

he is a rockist that makes music that could be none more rockist, and thus he by all rights should be a Blofeld/Luthor/Dr. Doom level villain w/r/t ILM . He does interviews where he sez "this is my Kreator song!" "this is my 45 Grave song!" or "This is my Green Velvet song" yet it always comes out as Petty/Springsteen/Parsons readymades.

veronica moser, Thursday, 14 February 2019 21:11 (seven years ago)

An alt-country-rock performer I know IRL is a complete rockist by these standards, but the few times I have seen him mentioned here have been approving.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 14 February 2019 21:13 (seven years ago)

the thing about having the power of fame/talent means you have nearly endless resources to learn how to not be an abusive asshole and people double down because of this myth that you got to that point based on who you are as a person, so why change anything? people work with you and fans show up to your shows, so hey, keep on doing you, I guess

I mean, it sounds like Adams at least had glimpses of the reality that he's a total shithead but his bargaining phase was to try to get people to tell him that he's ok, or tell him lies about their age, or accept his cruel statements about them

mh, Thursday, 14 February 2019 21:14 (seven years ago)

Re: rockism — the day before the recent news broke, he made some press with this tweet:

Heartbreak Warfare by @JohnMayer is one of the best songs on one of the best albums of all time.

Psychological abuse is criminalized in many countries, and is in the process of being so in Denmark. While the age of consent is 15. So.

Frederik B, Thursday, 14 February 2019 21:51 (seven years ago)

wonder how many teenage girls the Dead fucked while on the road. probably all of them!

Adams is obv a piece of shit. The whole spectrum of things he's accused of doing are bad. I do think he's written some great songs but they make up about 1/16th of his output from what I've listened to; and we've already established pieces of shit can make good art. doesn't mean you have to give him money or listen to him anymore though.

akm, Thursday, 14 February 2019 21:53 (seven years ago)

(xp) It's a criminal act in the UK. Or, it's a criminal act under English (& Welsh) Law and under Scottish Law but imagine it isn't in N. Ireland, judging by their past record.

wrt prince

https://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/how-princes-charisma-helped-him-7814476

When Prince spotted 18-year-old Tara Leigh Patrick in the early 1990s at a nightclub, he asked her to audition for him.

Prince signed her to his record label and came up with her new name: Carmen Electra.

After their romance the model went on to marry basketball player Dennis Rodman and singer Dave Navarro, but Carmen said of Prince: “I will always love him.”

English actress Anna Garcia met Prince at a London gig when she was 16 and lived with him in his Minneapolis home at the age of 17.

Prince gave her the name Anna Fantastic and she inspired his songs Pink Cashmere and Lemon Crush.

Marvin Gaye’s daughter Nona fell in love with Prince but their relationship ended when he met Mayte Garcia , who would become his first wife.

The relationship with Nona came to a screeching halt when Prince invited her to a show and she saw Mayte wearing an engagement ring.

Mayte had sent Prince a video of her bellydancing in 1990 when she was 16, and she was soon hired to be part of his Diamonds and Pearls tour.

On Valentine’s Day 1996, Mayte, then 22, married 37-year-old Prince. White doves were released when they said their vows. Prince wrote his 1995 hit song The Most Beautiful Girl In The World about her.

Mayte told the Mirror: “All the songs he wrote for me, that’s a pretty hard act to follow.

'I’ve dated a couple of guys, musicians, who have written me poems or songs and I’m like, ‘Seriously, don’t even go there. You can’t compete!’”

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 14 February 2019 21:58 (seven years ago)

MAYER: Someone asked me the other day, “What does it feel like now to have a hood pass?” And by the way, it’s sort of a contradiction in terms, because if you really had a hood pass, you could call it a n****r pass. Why are you pulling a punch and calling it a hood pass if you really have a hood pass? But I said, “I can’t really have a hood pass. I’ve never walked into a restaurant, asked for a table and been told, ‘We’re full.'”

PLAYBOY: It is true; a lot of rappers love you. You recorded with Common and Kanye West, played live with Jay-Z.

MAYER: What is being black? It’s making the most of your life, not taking a single moment for granted. Taking something that’s seen as a struggle and making it work for you, or you’ll die inside. Not to say that my struggle is like the collective struggle of black America. But maybe my struggle is similar to one black dude’s.

PLAYBOY: Do black women throw themselves at you?

MAYER: I don’t think I open myself to it. My dick is sort of like a white supremacist. I’ve got a Benetton heart and a fuckin’ David Duke cock. I’m going to start dating separately from my dick.
