when did the ken colyer stuff turn up? i must have missed those. any chance of a repost (can't see them on either torrent).

dumdum, Monday, 5 December 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

They didn't turn up, I don't think anybody has them.

TRG (TRG), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

most of those surpise package things were collected (white stripes, wildbunch omitted) on cd (£10.99):

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00008A7J4/qid=1133806308/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_8_2/202-4018131-5359869

i don't understand how we can have 2/3rds of that ep but are still missing the real pills track.

or, 7" is $4 from here:
http://www.flyingbomb.com/ammo-us.html

tracer?.. 8)

xpost:
we have some ken colyer but not the one they showed in the documentary, i think. wasn't the listed track on two releases? or something. we have:
052: Isle Of Capri / St Phillip Street Breakdown
052: Shine / Gentofte Blues

koogs (koogs), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

they weren't on tracer hand's list of ones still outstanding, though, which is why i asked. i've asked my dad to look through his jazz stuff for them.

dumdum, Monday, 5 December 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

i think it boils down to:

http://www.chrisbarber.net/epcovers/ep-003a.htm (which we have)
vs
http://www.chrisbarber.net/epcovers/ep-006a.htm (which we don't)

the Times list is very short on details.

koogs (koogs), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

actually, didn't this crop up in interviews? (the walters interview that was on bbc6 recently?) where he points out that one of the tracks has lonnie donnigan going 'Oi!' at the beginning.

koogs (koogs), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

crap, yr right alex.. derr.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

kevin furr (kevfurr), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

dumdum: right, ok- I missed that on Tracer's list and was looking at Alex's.

Good news, I have the Real Pills track, just got it! Will post in a few hours. (Thanks Steve, if you read this thread.)

TRG (TRG), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

RE. Ken Colyer E.P.

The definitive answer as to which ep of the two is in the box is this one: http://www.chrisbarber.net/epcovers/ep-006a.htm

I can be confident of this for two very good reasons.

1/ We get a glimpse of the cover in the channel 4 documentary - it's green (tempo exa 31): If I ever cease to love; Bucket got a hole in it
Wildcat blues; Wabash blues, rather than red (tempo exa 26)!

2/ They play the lead track, 'If I ever cease to love' in the background. I recognised this immediately because that's the ep I bought from ebay which I never uploaded because I thought someone sourced a better version somewhere up there in a previous thread, however I got that bit wrong and obviously we still need me to upload these Colyer tracks - Sorry about that. I'll get onto it!

We're also missing the other songs you requested, Kevin.

Even if some tracks are still missing, this is going to make a superb Christmas present for a couple of people I know :)

OK, I am toying with making a giant Christmas gift to you all by making a torrent of my Festive Fifty archive which is very nearly complete. I have found these torrent creation instructions upthread:

What you do (and what I would do if I hadn't already used up most of today's free time on this already) is:
1: Create a big folder for the files
2: Create subfolders for each of the 142 seven-inches
3: Drop the existing files in the right folders, with a consistent naming scheme
4: Create a .torrent of all that (possibly using TorrentZip: http://www.pleasuredome.org.uk/mameftpgroup/index.php?full#tzip )
5: Hand out the torrent so that everyone can start downloading (and encourage those who have most of the files in the torrent already to put them in the right places so the torrent gets seeded much faster)
6: When new files are added, update the .torrent file and publish it - it'll only download the new stuff

Am I right in saying that by using this approach the files don't then need to be uploaded - that you, in effect, become the only seed from the start and the files are leeched directly from you until some people have got far enough to become seeders as well? Basically it's already ordered and named properly, and at the stage to be torrent zipped. Am I correct in saying I just do that, then YSI the torrent?

Aldo - those instructions were for making a torrent of the Peelbox archive as it expanded, so that new torrents could be created of the archive without making everyone download everything again.

If you've already got a complete fileset for what you want to share, you can just create a torrent using whatever you find easiest (I believe Azureus has some built in tools)

The heart of the question is about uploading to a website though, as some of the stuff I've read implies I need to do. The impression I get from upthread here, however, is that if I create a trackerless torrent and YSI here then I don't need to upload the stuff anywhere, that I can just be the first seed and it'll be self-sustaining after that.

If that's right then I can do this really quickly, if not I'll need to knock up somewhere to upload it to.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

that's a great idea you have there with the festive fifty, aldo. but why don't you just zip all files and ysi the big zip file. it will take some time but i think ysi allows files which are up to 1 gb big. disadvantage is of course that there are only 25 download slots (probably more but that's what ysi says). after one week the link will be down in any way though. maybe rapidshare is better? in any case you do not have to upload the stuff to your webspace.

not sure if i understood your question, aldo. forget my last post. i am not an expert on torrents. but yousending a torrent somehow seems to imply an upload to somewhere, no?

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

Upthread, one of the larger YSI'd zip files seemed to go off very quickly.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

alex, you'd only upload the bittorent meta files so that people know where to find it, not the entire data file.

what's missing from your festive fifty archive aldo? there was someone on some fall list somewhere (don't know details) who was very close to finishing the same thing.

however it's resolved aldo, let me be the first to say thanks for your offer to share such an excellent Peel thing!

All my stuff is on soulseek as ezone17

Thanks.

ezone, Tuesday, 6 December 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

but why don't you just zip all files and ysi the big zip file. it will take some time but i think ysi allows files which are up to 1 gb big.

The folder is 6gb unzipped, so somehow I don't see it coming down far enough.

I can't remember what's missing, to be honest, but it's only about 5 tracks and none of them are that old - it's just recent things I haven't bothered tracking down.

I have to go out for an hour or so now, but will have a bash at this later and see if I can get it to work.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

all those haven't been posted yet here, ezone. is all your stuff the rest including the other missing tracks i mentioned? i don't use soulseek. if someone (using soulseek) could ysi those, that would be phantastic.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

If the folder is 6gb one possibility is torrenting it at themixingbowl.org.

PS echoing alex in mainhattan's request for any tks that are still only available on slsk.

Cheers

dumdum, Tuesday, 6 December 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

I doubt slsk is much help for any that we're missing at this point. I've tried and tried.
