come to think of it it is quite good, idk what was up my ass about it before. probably not playing loud enough
― imago, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 23:15 (seven years ago)
somebody mentioned idris ackamoor and i'd never heard it so i checked it out, and now i've been playing warrior dance on a loop for 3 hours. i doubt it places but what a great record.
― simmy simmy ya, simmy yam simmy yay (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 6 February 2019 23:27 (seven years ago)
I just want to reiterate that it's a crying shame FACS won't pop up on this list for more people to check them out because their album Negative Houses is a masterpiece of modern post-punk, basically everything I wanted Interpol to be but just weren't.
― GDPR vs GAPDY (DJP), Thursday, 7 February 2019 01:21 (seven years ago)
a brian case band? yeah, i'll check that out.
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 7 February 2019 01:26 (seven years ago)
No idea what FACS and Interpol have in common but I do like that record

I had Sweetener at #7! I wasn’t a fan of it at first but it grew on me
― josh az (2011nostalgia), Thursday, 7 February 2019 05:42 (seven years ago)
like mold on a licked donut
― bhad bundy (Simon H.), Thursday, 7 February 2019 05:45 (seven years ago)
it's fairly comfortably my least favourite ariana record - that might change tomorrow though lol

GGD is a great return album and I regret not voting for it, didn’t think there would be enough for it in here so preferred to cast votes on something more likely to make it... ironically I don’t think half of my list made it... was my ballot unweighted? I have no idea what my number one was if it was weighted, I would have bet it was Tirzah.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 7 February 2019 06:50 (seven years ago)
GGD were like top 10 in 2011 (thought that's before i was here) and i figured they'd be like top 20 this year too with an almost-as-good album
― ufo, Thursday, 7 February 2019 06:57 (seven years ago)
gang gang dance, if you're reading this - making the 42nd best album of the year is still pretty good
― Karl Malone, Thursday, 7 February 2019 07:06 (seven years ago)
morrisp: I had outed myself upthread as a Sweetener voter even before you asked. Do I get a double donut now?voodoo chili: “Warrior Dance” was my Amazing Discovery too, just last week. What an awesome track. I’m loving the rest of the album too.
― breastcrawl, Thursday, 7 February 2019 08:53 (seven years ago)
Oh wow the Eiko Ishibashi album really opens up on headphones. A Ghost In A Train Thinking is incredible.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 7 February 2019 09:09 (seven years ago)
this against all logic is quite fun. I think it wld be more enjoyable if it were less familiar
― ogmor, Thursday, 7 February 2019 09:16 (seven years ago)
Enjoying the Laurel Halo. Not sure why but never really checked out much of her work before
And looking forward to listening to Universal Beings based on comments upthread
― groovypanda, Thursday, 7 February 2019 10:40 (seven years ago)
I really loved Laurel Halo's "Quarantine" album from '12 but everything shes released since has been unappealing
― . (Michael B), Thursday, 7 February 2019 11:43 (seven years ago)
me = Sweetener voter
― Jeff W, Thursday, 7 February 2019 11:45 (seven years ago)
Random thought I had overnight: could Khruangbin yet place? I didn't vote for it, but I thought the record was well liked round here.
― Jeff W, Thursday, 7 February 2019 11:50 (seven years ago)
Universal Beings is, along with Neneh Cherry and Saba (thx Pom!), the best discovery for me so far this rollout.
― Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 7 February 2019 11:59 (seven years ago)
For me it's the opposite, I hated the vocals on that record, but her subsequent instrumental releases have been more appealing, with Raw Silk being the best.
I didn't check out Dust in 2017 cos I heard it has vocals too... Are they as grating as on Quarantine?
― Tuomas, Thursday, 7 February 2019 12:09 (seven years ago)
dust is my least favourite laurel halo record and you'd probably find it grating
― ogmor, Thursday, 7 February 2019 12:21 (seven years ago)
If you heard Laurel Halo's earlier stuff (Hour Logic, King Felix) before later stuff you'd know she was a decent singer (when choosing to be). RSUW is the first thing I've liked by her in years either way.
― nashwan, Thursday, 7 February 2019 12:40 (seven years ago)
Yeah, I've no doubt the vocal style she chose for Quarantine was intentional, but that doesn't change the fact it sounds awful.
― Tuomas, Thursday, 7 February 2019 12:44 (seven years ago)
her vocals *are* more pleasing on dust
it’s kind of a v fractured pop record tuomas. took me forever to like it but i sure like it now
― jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 7 February 2019 12:50 (seven years ago)
I liked Quarantine but on the whole there's something about Halo's productions that don't jibe so well with me
― frame casual (dog latin), Thursday, 7 February 2019 13:15 (seven years ago)
Is the poll finishing today as usual?
― Oor Neechy, Thursday, 7 February 2019 13:27 (seven years ago)
Yes.
I'm......quite enjoying the Ariana Grande album?
― imago, Thursday, 7 February 2019 13:28 (seven years ago)
Until Breathin comes along and shits all over everything
― imago, Thursday, 7 February 2019 13:33 (seven years ago)
But hey - the title track is GREAT!
it's kind of sad that the Keith Emerson/Robert Berry album isn't gonna place, way to respect a deceased legend guys
― frogbs, Thursday, 7 February 2019 13:40 (seven years ago)
lol
― imago, Thursday, 7 February 2019 13:43 (seven years ago)
it surprises me 0 percent that you like the awful pharrell tracks
(the title track is p good given the circumstances)
― jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 7 February 2019 13:44 (seven years ago)
lol I was gonna say, calling 'breathin' the nadir appears, from a perusal of reviews, to be a massive challop
― imago, Thursday, 7 February 2019 13:46 (seven years ago)
call it as i hear it yo
the title track is one of the better pharrell tracks and i liked "successful" a fair bit too because it sounded like animal crossing music. "breathin" is way better though even though it's basically just a dangerous woman leftover
― ufo, Thursday, 7 February 2019 13:48 (seven years ago)
Shame not to see Szun Waves place. It's probably the one I've most often foisted on people this year. And I'm guessing I'm largely alone with my Good, the Bad & the Queen love. God, I feel old.
― Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Thursday, 7 February 2019 14:13 (seven years ago)
I also voted for TGTBATQ
― mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 7 February 2019 14:25 (seven years ago)
And Sweetener
I liked TGTBATQ! But didn't vote for it. But it's good Albarn (as opposed to most Albarn these days)
― imago, Thursday, 7 February 2019 14:26 (seven years ago)
I feel a) old and ii) grubby for voting for Albarn. Glad I'm not alone!
― Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Thursday, 7 February 2019 14:29 (seven years ago)
really looking forward to Autechre placing #1 today
― frogbs, Thursday, 7 February 2019 14:30 (seven years ago)
I have had an excellent realisation btw
― imago, Thursday, 7 February 2019 14:32 (seven years ago)
i think that autechre song i started playing during the tracks poll is still going on
― simmy simmy ya, simmy yam simmy yay (voodoo chili), Thursday, 7 February 2019 14:32 (seven years ago)
if gaz coombes can crack the top 20, then there’s every chance albarn has made it too
― goats eat grandma (NickB), Thursday, 7 February 2019 14:33 (seven years ago)
New TGTBATQ is dreeeary. I liked the single though.
― . (Michael B), Thursday, 7 February 2019 14:36 (seven years ago)
tbaf to it, it is kind of a concept album about dreariness
