it’s true that the peak of mount MES peers down into an uncanny valley littered with embarrassing / corny / annoying vocal performances

budo jeru, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 20:46 (seven years ago)

Gareth is def the most common sticking point, but thankfully the targets are generally well chosen (OK maybe not on "Shut Down SETI") and he is at least capable of toning it down a song or two at a time

bhad bundy (Simon H.), Wednesday, 6 February 2019 20:49 (seven years ago)

he isn't taking after nick cave or mes! just you all wait until i hear all the other albums that placed today

imago, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 20:50 (seven years ago)

Lol

bhad bundy (Simon H.), Wednesday, 6 February 2019 20:54 (seven years ago)

That's after I finish this McCraven thing, which is still impressing me immensely (do I have to like jazz now)

imago, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 20:54 (seven years ago)

i hope the Low silent majority pulls through

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Wednesday, 6 February 2019 20:54 (seven years ago)

Drugs a money wanted an extension incase anyone wanted that extra week so you can vote.

All voters welcome.

If you like something vote for it. You can choose up to 50 albums if you wish.

Oor Neechy, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 20:55 (seven years ago)

oh and here is a SPOTIFY PLAYLIST for Rock/Metal Poll Nominations

Oor Neechy, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 21:00 (seven years ago)

Omg it's Shabaka Hutchings himself who's been helping to absolutely rip up the last few tracks! Maybe I should give Sons Of Kemet a full go. This seems kind of even better and wilder though from what I've heard of SOK. Now I've established that this is indeed culled from recordings in four different cities the concept got even cooler

imago, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 21:01 (seven years ago)

really thought SOK would be a lock but I don't see it making top 20. maybe I'll be surprised!!

frogbs, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 21:15 (seven years ago)

me too i am very positively surprised by the mccraven album. a great jazz discovery! low has got to be in the top 3!

Poll idea: Best of the four cities/sections (I vote London).

jaymc, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 21:18 (seven years ago)

Well as it's London of course there's a Rhodes player lol

lj: get into jazz

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 6 February 2019 21:20 (seven years ago)

shhh don't tell him there's spiritual hat prog jazz in the ILM jazz poll

Oor Neechy, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 21:28 (seven years ago)

What the hell? I voted for all of Sweatshirt, McCraven, TFS, AAL, RBCF and Pusha T from this lot. Was only confident of the rap selections being this high.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 22:22 (seven years ago)

...and Uchis too. Less surprising.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 22:25 (seven years ago)

I thought Sweetener would be top 10!

⅋ (crüt), Wednesday, 6 February 2019 22:42 (seven years ago)

nb I didn’t vote for it.

⅋ (crüt), Wednesday, 6 February 2019 22:42 (seven years ago)

If the other 10 ppl who did vote for it will reveal themselves, I'll buy them each a donut, lol

i stan corrected (morrisp), Wednesday, 6 February 2019 23:09 (seven years ago)

Reviewing everything, I showed tt the GGD album being all 'yeah there are some good ideas but it's all a bit gloopy' and she was like 'no this is actually great' and now we are reevaluating GGD

imago, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 23:12 (seven years ago)

I shouldn't have started with Young Boy, it's actually rly good even I have to admit that

imago, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 23:12 (seven years ago)

I'm really bad at getting ppl to hate things is the lesson here

imago, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 23:13 (seven years ago)

tt is correct

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 6 February 2019 23:13 (seven years ago)

come to think of it it is quite good, idk what was up my ass about it before. probably not playing loud enough

imago, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 23:15 (seven years ago)

somebody mentioned idris ackamoor and i'd never heard it so i checked it out, and now i've been playing warrior dance on a loop for 3 hours. i doubt it places but what a great record.

simmy simmy ya, simmy yam simmy yay (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 6 February 2019 23:27 (seven years ago)

I just want to reiterate that it's a crying shame FACS won't pop up on this list for more people to check them out because their album Negative Houses is a masterpiece of modern post-punk, basically everything I wanted Interpol to be but just weren't.

GDPR vs GAPDY (DJP), Thursday, 7 February 2019 01:21 (seven years ago)

a brian case band? yeah, i'll check that out.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 7 February 2019 01:26 (seven years ago)

No idea what FACS and Interpol have in common but I do like that record

I had Sweetener at #7! I wasn’t a fan of it at first but it grew on me

josh az (2011nostalgia), Thursday, 7 February 2019 05:42 (seven years ago)

like mold on a licked donut

bhad bundy (Simon H.), Thursday, 7 February 2019 05:45 (seven years ago)

it's fairly comfortably my least favourite ariana record - that might change tomorrow though lol

monotony, Thursday, 7 February 2019 05:45 (seven years ago)

GGD is a great return album and I regret not voting for it, didn’t think there would be enough for it in here so preferred to cast votes on something more likely to make it... ironically I don’t think half of my list made it... was my ballot unweighted? I have no idea what my number one was if it was weighted, I would have bet it was Tirzah.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 7 February 2019 06:50 (seven years ago)

GGD were like top 10 in 2011 (thought that's before i was here) and i figured they'd be like top 20 this year too with an almost-as-good album

ufo, Thursday, 7 February 2019 06:57 (seven years ago)

gang gang dance, if you're reading this - making the 42nd best album of the year is still pretty good

Karl Malone, Thursday, 7 February 2019 07:06 (seven years ago)

morrisp: I had outed myself upthread as a Sweetener voter even before you asked. Do I get a double donut now?

voodoo chili: “Warrior Dance” was my Amazing Discovery too, just last week. What an awesome track. I’m loving the rest of the album too.

breastcrawl, Thursday, 7 February 2019 08:53 (seven years ago)

Oh wow the Eiko Ishibashi album really opens up on headphones. A Ghost In A Train Thinking is incredible.

Matt DC, Thursday, 7 February 2019 09:09 (seven years ago)

this against all logic is quite fun. I think it wld be more enjoyable if it were less familiar

ogmor, Thursday, 7 February 2019 09:16 (seven years ago)

Enjoying the Laurel Halo. Not sure why but never really checked out much of her work before

And looking forward to listening to Universal Beings based on comments upthread

groovypanda, Thursday, 7 February 2019 10:40 (seven years ago)

I really loved Laurel Halo's "Quarantine" album from '12 but everything shes released since has been unappealing

. (Michael B), Thursday, 7 February 2019 11:43 (seven years ago)

me = Sweetener voter

Jeff W, Thursday, 7 February 2019 11:45 (seven years ago)

Random thought I had overnight: could Khruangbin yet place? I didn't vote for it, but I thought the record was well liked round here.

Jeff W, Thursday, 7 February 2019 11:50 (seven years ago)

Universal Beings is, along with Neneh Cherry and Saba (thx Pom!), the best discovery for me so far this rollout.

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 7 February 2019 11:59 (seven years ago)

I really loved Laurel Halo's "Quarantine" album from '12 but everything shes released since has been unappealing

For me it's the opposite, I hated the vocals on that record, but her subsequent instrumental releases have been more appealing, with Raw Silk being the best.

I didn't check out Dust in 2017 cos I heard it has vocals too... Are they as grating as on Quarantine?
