Are there going to be no rap records in the top 20 this year?

seeing TFS described as boring is funny to me cause several ppl I've played it for found it actively distressing/anxiety-inducing

it's pretty straightforward rockin' out to me once you look beyond the weird surface

if you can sit through the climactic verse of 'soft power' and still claim boredom then you're probably ready for space

also what i said was "surprisingly boring for the band name," all the qualifiers are important

wish I'd thought to nom + campaign for the "stayin' alive" cover tbh

sex and hurricanes both v v exciting, it’s true

i won't agree if Robyn wins but only bc it was my #2

i'm way behind, catching up, but that was a lovely piece of writing, brad.

i had plenty of time for the drones but tfs is basically the less-good moments of the drones (of which there was no shortage, honestly) consolidated

More than the music of TFS I hated the frontman aiming for misanthropy but coming across as a pissy little whiner (pot, kettle) I remember thinking the instrumental was fairly decent.

he can be....a lot so when the songs sprawl like this it wears thin.

it’s true that the peak of mount MES peers down into an uncanny valley littered with embarrassing / corny / annoying vocal performances

Gareth is def the most common sticking point, but thankfully the targets are generally well chosen (OK maybe not on "Shut Down SETI") and he is at least capable of toning it down a song or two at a time

he isn't taking after nick cave or mes! just you all wait until i hear all the other albums that placed today

Omg it's Shabaka Hutchings himself who's been helping to absolutely rip up the last few tracks! Maybe I should give Sons Of Kemet a full go. This seems kind of even better and wilder though from what I've heard of SOK. Now I've established that this is indeed culled from recordings in four different cities the concept got even cooler

really thought SOK would be a lock but I don't see it making top 20. maybe I'll be surprised!!

me too i am very positively surprised by the mccraven album. a great jazz discovery! low has got to be in the top 3!

What the hell? I voted for all of Sweatshirt, McCraven, TFS, AAL, RBCF and Pusha T from this lot. Was only confident of the rap selections being this high.

...and Uchis too. Less surprising.

Reviewing everything, I showed tt the GGD album being all 'yeah there are some good ideas but it's all a bit gloopy' and she was like 'no this is actually great' and now we are reevaluating GGD

I shouldn't have started with Young Boy, it's actually rly good even I have to admit that

somebody mentioned idris ackamoor and i'd never heard it so i checked it out, and now i've been playing warrior dance on a loop for 3 hours. i doubt it places but what a great record.

I just want to reiterate that it's a crying shame FACS won't pop up on this list for more people to check them out because their album Negative Houses is a masterpiece of modern post-punk, basically everything I wanted Interpol to be but just weren't.

a brian case band? yeah, i'll check that out.

No idea what FACS and Interpol have in common but I do like that record

I had Sweetener at #7! I wasn’t a fan of it at first but it grew on me

it's fairly comfortably my least favourite ariana record - that might change tomorrow though lol
