tbh if applied to this poll it would kill Geyser, which I am slightly loath to accept tbh as I prefer it to Nobody and it's here on merit

imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:31 (seven years ago)

here's an idea: every year we do a best of the 80s poll simultaneous to the EOY poll so y'all can get this shit out of your system

rob, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:32 (seven years ago)

I'm also someone who preferred the previous Mr. Twin Sister album, but I'll have to give Salt another chance. I do think that "Keep on Mixin'" is a great lead-off track (love the polyrhythmic beat), and "Jaipur" sounded nice just now in the poll playlist.

jaymc, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:33 (seven years ago)

If you're voting for 10 tracks by the same artist, may I interest you in the albums poll?

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:33 (seven years ago)

if y'all are having this conversation now i'd like to suggest it should've happened in 2013 or whenever vampire weekend had like thirty tracks in the 77

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:34 (seven years ago)

from a record i liked!

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:34 (seven years ago)

I never vote for tracks that appear on albums I vote for, but that's me.

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:34 (seven years ago)

I've probably been suggesting this every year since around then lol

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:35 (seven years ago)

so that would boot out like, 15 songs, give or take? what's the #92 result look like in terms of votes and such?

there'd definitely a strategic element to this, for example "Music is Worth Living For" was not my favorite song on the AWK album but I ranked it higher b/c I knew it was more likely to place than say, "Break the Curse"

frogbs, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:35 (seven years ago)

I almost never have any tracks/albums overlap, but I made a couple exceptions this year

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:35 (seven years ago)

xp
I mean I wouldn't personally do that, I was just thinking of hypotheticals. I am genuinely confused by people who see two tracks by one artist place and think "I hope [track #3] places too"

rob, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:35 (seven years ago)

I never vote for tracks that appear on albums I vote for, but that's me.

iirc, the Lex was a stickler for this, too

jaymc, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:37 (seven years ago)

OK, this Talaboman track is great, I'm a sucker for things that should be boring but somehow never stop growing on me for 11 minutes (the repeated ping in this case)

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:37 (seven years ago)

cool as it is atm imo

nxd, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:37 (seven years ago)

I don't like loads of repetition of acts but I'd dislike popular tracks getting the boot more.

emil.y, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:38 (seven years ago)

emil.y has it

imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:38 (seven years ago)

a true testament to the 70s german scene

“2000 Elefanten” got me to play some Malaria just now, early 80s German scene, close enough I guess.

breastcrawl, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:38 (seven years ago)

also, refusing to vote for tracks by an artist you've voted for in the albums poll is insanity imo

imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:39 (seven years ago)

I use the lex/Alfred rule as a way to cut down my tracks ballot, but I always end up making a couple of exceptions

rob, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:40 (seven years ago)

I have too much love to give to spend it all on under 48 or so artists

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:40 (seven years ago)

(And now I’m playing “2000 Elefanten” again. Very cool track. Will check out the album)

breastcrawl, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:40 (seven years ago)

ya i vote for my favorite things and sometimes my favorite big things have favorite little things in them

suggest boban (Will M.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:40 (seven years ago)

i mean, i did tbf cut tropical fuck storm and daphne & celeste out of my tracks ballot because i'm more invested in the album as a whole, but there were some artists where i just could not avoid voting for them in both polls and to do so would have defied my year in music

imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:42 (seven years ago)

would've been weird if DNA placed last yea, but not Humble

But what if the artist is Wizkid?

breastcrawl, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:47 (seven years ago)

I'll start a poll once both rollouts are done. let's reconvene on the subject then

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:48 (seven years ago)

this mgmt song is pretty good

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:50 (seven years ago)

maybe i'll check out the album

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:50 (seven years ago)

album is solid! I always like when seemingly flash-in-the-pan acts turn out to have some longevity

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:54 (seven years ago)

I never vote for tracks that appear on albums I vote for, but that's me.

breastcrawl otm
Most of the artists I root for these days release tons of great singles but v few albums.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 20:05 (seven years ago)

If only the highest song places and the others are disqualified I don't see how it resolves vote-splitting.
If there's no consensus that's it. Placing several songs is actually a good sign.
+1 at not voting for album tracks being madness.
Every time I come back to this thread and press on "skipping...", I automatically land on Andrew WK giving me thumbs up :s

Nabozo, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 20:10 (seven years ago)

Hop Along was my #2, super happy to see it place

josh az (2011nostalgia), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 20:13 (seven years ago)

I think the only way to artificially reduce track possibilities is through nominations: don't give 40 nominations per user, force them to be disciplined.

Nabozo, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 20:13 (seven years ago)

It doesn't seem to be on Youtube, can I listen to it anywhere without having to sign up for a streaming service?

you can go to a nearby factory and sit near an industrial fan

A++

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 20:18 (seven years ago)

top three for today is something like (having not heard Autechre but I can tell what kind of thing it is and it'll be a fine from me n' all):

46: Mr. Twin Sister – “Jaipur”
54: Talaboman – “Dins El Llit (Superpitcher Remix)”
60: Cardi B featuring Bad Bunny and J Balvin – “I Like It”

Worst had to be Smoko. Sounded like lj was responsible for this?

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 20:26 (seven years ago)

would have still made the 77 without my 6 points

imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 20:27 (seven years ago)

I like that Hop Along song but voted for "Somewhere a Judge" instead.

jaymc, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 20:27 (seven years ago)

I would definitely support curtailing nominations to max of 20 overall or fewer.

If an album has 5+ nominations, you could do a short poll to narrow it down to 1 or 2.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 20:28 (seven years ago)

I’m opposed to this curating/curtailing of nominations. Let a thousand flowers bloom (or wither, whatever the case may be).

breastcrawl, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 20:32 (seven years ago)

Reducing individual nominations won't reduce vote-splitting. It will make it a lot harder for people like me, who can't rely on anyone else to nominate things they like.

emil.y, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 20:33 (seven years ago)

lol yeah this is gonna be the 4th year in the row where either 0 or 1 of my song choices make it :)

frogbs, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 20:33 (seven years ago)

just because it's a particularly inspired image, i am compelled to shout out Moka again for the consistently excellent graphics

I think you have a different problem than vote-splitting.

Nabozo, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 20:39 (seven years ago)

Do ya?

slack thompson (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 20:41 (seven years ago)

kudos again to the images moka, fantastic work

nxd, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 20:42 (seven years ago)

let a thousand flowers bloom
Whenever I see this quoted I wonder if it is done with or without knowledge of itd historical context, as has very different meaning if with.

I mean, yeah, it is tough having better taste than the majority of ilx0rs, but why should I be punished for that?

emil.y, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 20:53 (seven years ago)

Nominations threads will come in handy when it is time for the cull.xp
